sweater question Cute Sweater as a beginner - doable or irrealistic?

Dear knitting gods and goddesses of this beautiful community,

I come to thee today with my latest dilemma:
I am a new knitter (long time crocheter) and I am currently finishing the step by step sweater by florence miller. I liked the experience so much that I was looking for a new project to start and came across the Laura Dalgaard page, where the pattern for her Cute Sweater was free upon subscription.

Innocent little me thought: ‘What a nice sweater to gift my sister for christmas!’
But looking at the pattern, I discovered that, besides the colourwork that the author mentions is better done twisted, it also is knit bottom up and requires steeking the arms 🥲

My optimistic brain says to try it either way, but I don’t think I’m being very realistic, given I would like to do it with the yarn I already have at home and which needs to be hold 2 strands together to meet the gauge for 5 mm needles (and the pattern requires 6 mm).

Has anyone attempted this sweater? Is it difficult per se or is it doable? And do you think I could use the yarn I have at home to achieve a similar result?

Note: the yarn is acrylic (which I don’t know is very steeking recommended)

sweater question Fit help: extra fabric around chest

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hi hivemind, I'm looking for some fit help. I recently knitted the Waves Sweater, a fairly standard top-down raglan sleeve pattern with a rollneck (I did a provisional cast on and then added the rollneck afterwards), and a few short rows on the back for shaping.

Unfortunately, when I wear it, there seems to be almost too much fabric at the front, meaning there's a bit of rolling of the knit around the lower neck/upper chest which I don't love. I can sort of forcibly redistribute it when standing still, but as soon as I've been walking or moving naturally, the fabric really collects around the neck in a way which frustrates me.

I wonder if anyone has any advice as to if there's anything I can do to rectify this? Is it a common issue with rollnecks? Do you think redoing the neck would help, or unpicking the first few rows of the torso and reknitting the neck from there? I consider myself a fairly advanced knitter and I'm not averse to some knitting surgery. Alternatively, if there's no knitting surgery I could do to fix it, what would you recommend if I were to frog and reknit the whole thing to avoid the same happening again?

(X posted to r/knittingadvice )

Thank you!

where do I start? What to make with this yarn =.=

Hi! I have this pretty, textured yarn (20%silk, 80%cotton, dk weight) and I'm not sure what to make with it... because it is textured im not sure if i can go with a highly textured pattern? I like the pattern of marielle sweater/cardigan and above is a lace swatch. Do you think the texture means i need to just do a solid stockinette or can i do a quad eyelette pattern without it looking too messy. Any recommendations for a sweater

knitting tools question Is my yarn choice okay and what needle size???

I am making a baby blanket for my niece (Three Wishes Baby Blanket by candylou) and I’m DEFINITELY overthinking things and panicking. My yarn needs to be machine washable and tumble-dry, and 100% cotton. I’m doing pink, yellow, and cream yarns.

The yarns I have (tentatively) settled on are the Purl Soho Serif yarn in alabaster cream and rosy pink, and the Purl Soho Sunshower Cotton yarn in Corn on the Cob (I think the different yarn textures could be cool).

One yarn is slightly heavier, their gauges are 4.75-5 and 4.75-5.25.

The pattern says use size 8 needles, and the yarns say size 4-6 or 5-6 needles.

So my questions are: are my yarns okay for this project (if not, any recommendations that roughly match the color), and what size needles do you recommend???

tension help! Judge my floats

This is my first colorwork project, and I’m just trying to check my floats before I get further into the sweater. I was trying to keep my floats small, but there was one round that used 3 colors and I just couldn’t figure out how to catch them and maintain color dominance so I let the floats be 5 stitches long.

How do they look so far? Are they too loose? Do they need to be shorter? Open to any and all helpful criticism. I’d rather know now than later. Thanks!

knitting tools question Is cotton really that bad for sweaters?

hey all! i'm asking this because i live in a country where yarn isn't easily accessible locally unless it's acrylic, cotton, or bamboo. it's also extremely hot here year round.

i really want to make my first sweater/cardigan but i'm very hesitant because i always see comments that cotton isn't good for that. i sometimes see wool brands online but it's a big commitment to buy them without knowing what it feels like in real life + color selection is small.

would love to know your opinion, thank you!

edit: thank you so much for all the help! i really appreciate it and i'm sure anyone who comes across this post will as well! different types of yarn isn't always accessible (also extremely expensive !!) to a lot of people so we sometimes have to make do with what we have. and idk unfortunately for someone who lives in a hot climate, i still prefer sweaters so i'll definitely take all of this into consideration in my next knit project. thank you!

I'm not sure whether the 2nd bullet point is just asking me to knit across or if it's asking me to basically repeat the bullet point above

I can’t tell if I’m twisting my stitches or if it’s a tension issue maybe ? I watched the videos on the FAQ about the knit and purl stitch and that’s how I have been knitting so far. Is it possible to still twist my stitches still? Also the sides are curling 💔. Thanks for the help in advance !

this is just a test square to practice the different stitches!

where do I start? Help for a newbie who wants to learn?

Hey! Long story short, I saw a few sweaters that I want to knit for a friend this Christmas. One is the Mary Maxin's Project Hail Mary sweater (the one with the fox in it), and the other is an old niche sweater which they like.

Problem is, I've only done basic knitting before. Where can I learn how to read and knit correctly the instructions for this?

(And also, if there's a way I can make a knitting plan for the second sweater; it's a bit old).

Thanks!

where did i go wrong? How To Improve Texture Of Stranded Colorwork In the Round?

Thumbnail

I just finished my first colorwork project. The intent of it was to be practice, so I'm not super upset that I got it doesn't look great- but I don't really know what I did wrong. I did get the color dominance wrong, I know that much- I held the blue closer to me rather than the white- but I don't get why the texture is off. It puckers usually whenever there's a color change from blue to white.

I did buy two worsted weight yarns, but from different brands, and one yarn (the blue) is ever so slightly thicker than the other, so that could be contributing.

I did my best to keep the floats a good tension, not too tight and not too loose, but trying doesn't mean succeeding. I also tried my hardest to keep my blue yarn a little bit lighter of a tension once I noticed the problems that started occurring.

Any advice for how I can knit colorwork, especially in the round, to get a flatter knit surface, would be very appreciated!

EDIT: forgot to link the pattern. It's the crystal trellis cowl by RosiePoseKnitCo.

sweater question Just trying to understand 😅

I am currently working increases on the yoke for saddle shoulders by yarning over either before or after the stitch markers (alternating so the increases are happening on the front and back) and doing twisted knit stitches into the YOs. I am likely not going to frog this bc it’s for my kiddo and I think he won’t care and it’s not a big enough nuisance to me but I’d just like to understand why they look different when I’m doing the same thing on both sides?

Heey everyone!

I have knitted the monday sweater from Petiteknit and unintentionally it became quite big. I have gauge swatched and blocked the swatch, aswell as the sweater. I have also followed the instructed cm's from the pattern. Considering I am a tall woman I am very confused with how it turned out this big on me. Does anyone have any idea why it would be this big? Any tips are welcome <3

knitting tools question Arthritic knitter (F30) seeks intentionally bent circular needles (N10)

Hi everyone!

I’m hoping that someone will be able to point me in the right direction. I have a set of 3.25mm (US3/UK10) circular needles that is the most comfortable needle I’ve ever used. The needles are bent in two places, which means they fit the curve of my hand beautifully.

I would love to get other sets in other sizes, but I have absolutely no idea what brand or even age they are (I was given them second hand 10 years ago by someone I no longer speak to) and everything I can find online about bent or curved needles shows me either cabling needles, DPNs, or people who’ve bent their straight needles by accident or on purpose. Mine were definitely made bent intentionally, as there’s no stress marks and the bends are in exactly the same place and angle on both needles.

My particular set is a silver chrome finish and as the finish wears off it’s exposing a brassy colour underneath. The cable is very firm, transparent, green, made of a solid plastic. End to end they’re about 60cm/2ft long, with a 40cm/15in string. They were given to me in Australia in 2016 by a German friend. I’d love to be able to find this exact brand, but mostly I just want other needles that are this shape and hopefully this comfortable to use.

I’ve tried bending straight needles, but getting the bend even is incredibly difficult and thicker needles (6mm+) often won’t bend at all, at least without equipment I don’t have access to. I just want to be able to buy them already bent or curved and I’m hoping one of you lovely folk will be able to help :)

Thanks in advance <3

pattern question Pattern help

Hello! I'm a beginner/intermediate knitting trying to understand a knitting pattern for a hooded scarf and would appreciate some advice as I'm feeling rather stuck!

I've just finished knitting the hood, which has an i-cord edge (something that was new to me), and I'm now moving on to the scarf section, which is confusing me. The instructions begin as follows:

SCARF RIGHT (RS)
Divide your sts in half, keeping the first half of sts on your needles and putting the second half on hold.

Row 1 (RS): k 3 (b), kfb, k till last 5 sts, k2tog, sl 3
Row 2 (WS): p 3 (b), p2tog, p till last 3 sts, sl 3
Row 3 (RS): k 3 (b), k till last 5 sts, k2tog, sl 3
Row 4 (WS): rep row 2

Rep rows 1–4 until scarf measures 24 cm (9.4") from where you divided your sts in half. Make a note of row and stitch count.

I've divided my stitches in half and am ready to start working the rows, but I'm confused. After finishing Row 1
The instructions say to purl the first three stitches of Row2, but I assumed these stitches would be knitted to maintain the i-cord edge, especially since the last three stitches of Row 1 are slipped.

If I slip the last three stitches of Row 1 and then purl the first three stitches of Row 2, the edge doesn't look right to me.

Am I misunderstanding how the i-cord edge is supposed to work here? I thought that if you s3 you should always k3 on the next row. Is it correct to purl those first three stitches on the wrong-side row, or am I misreading the pattern.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

pattern question Any ideas on how to fix this pattern ribbing so it’s symmetrical?

**REPOST AS I STILL HAVE NOT FOUND A SOLUTION.
Link to first post

First two pics are of fronts, last 3 are of backs. I’m trying to understand where the “decrease” are in that wording. So I counted and had 214 stitches at the start of the back and front including 2 edge stitches then I’m trying to work 2x2 ribbing, increased by 4 purl stitches on each side of the underarm, then got 218 stitches including 2 edge stitches so how is the stitch count in the pattern 196? (The diagram repeats btw do not have any decreases in them). At this point I might have to manually do the maths 😭

I’m trying to do a left leaning decrease and it looks odd. I’m following a tutorial I have used before and previously it didn’t come out like this so I’m not sure what I’ve done wrong… Is it actually incorrect or just my yarn looking odd? It’s three stitches from the edge. Thank you!

where did i go wrong? Dropped/ slipped stitch on the second row?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I'm a complete beginner and would really appreciate some help!

I'm knitting a garter stitch scarf using the knitted cast-on method. I've finished my first row and am currently knitting my second row.

I was doing my knit stitches, and i realized I've poked between the yarn when i was about to transfer my stitch from the left needle to the right needle, then i tried to undo it and I think around 1-2 stitches slipped off(?) my left needle in the process. Can't be 100% sure how it came to be. I tried putting them back onto the needle in different ways, and they all seemed wrong, truth is I can't figure out which loops I'm supposed to pick up.

The biggest problem is that I've only knitted one row, so it's really difficult for me to distinguish the cast-on stitches from the knitted stitches, or identify which loops should actually be sitting on my needle.

I've attached several close-up photos of the problem.

My questions:

  1. Can anyone identify exactly which loops I need to pick up and put back onto my left needle?
  2. How can I distinguish the correct loops from the other loose strands?

I've cast on 340 stitches, so I'd really prefer not to restart if possible! I'm following a pattern with different colored stripes that run lengthwise along the scarf, rather than across its width, so I need to cast on the full length instead.

I'd be incredibly grateful for step-by-step instructions suitable for a complete beginner, or just a diagnosis of what's going on. Thank you!

pattern question Knit Math Update…

I’m back again 😅

Despite feeling exceedingly silly for posting her yet again. I feel that I want to get some feedback before I actually start this darn border. This will be my last ask in regard to this on here as my next step will be physically going to my local yarn store and seeing if someone there will be willing to help me.

Okay. I followed the pattern instructions and came up with “working 14 times the 20 stitch repeat and having 10 stitches remaining.” Does this part make sense? I’m hoping that I did it correctly.

I feel like going down the whole knit pickup ratio rabbit hole made all of this more confusing for me as this pattern is not having me skip any stitches while I am picking them up? I watched so many videos and read an assortment of tutorials about it, but then after revisiting this pattern, I just feel more confused 😵‍💫

Please advise. I seriously feel a little stupid about bringing this up yet again, but I have worked very hard on this project and want to ensure that I understand what I am doing before I mess anything up.

Thank you all in advance and I appreciate your patience with me 😣🖤

where did i go wrong? Please help with a stupid magic loop question!

Hi all,

I have previously successfully knitted a hat using the magic loop method so I know I can do it but for some reason trying to knit a sleeve has me completely confused.

I know I need the working yarn on the back needle and both needles pointing right but I don't know how to get there! Do I turn the work upside down as I did in the video? This gets the working yarn in the correct position but it doesn't feel right to have the work on top of the needles like this. It feels like the answer is so obvious but I'm completely stuck. Thank you.

sweater question Not sure what to do w my collar of my sweater

I am knitting a puro sweater w modifications I saw
Posted on ravelry that I wanted to follow. The modifications I saw were shorter neck and ribbing and slightly shorter body.

They said they did 3”
For neck and all cuff/body ribbing (15 rounds).

I did end up sizing down on my needles to make gauge for the patter (15 st x 22rows In stockinette). There was no listed pattern gauge for the ribbing but I went down one needle size for the ribbing as well.

I ended up needing 19
Rounds to get 3”
When I first tried the neck on before
Starting on the yoke I thought it looked about right. After finishing my
First ball it seems to be not sitting right? Maybe too
Narrow and tall? Not sure if I could rip back
Or keep going a bit untill I can
Split the
Sleeves and the. See how
It lays?

I’m posting the ravelry pictures of the modified sweater (pre and post block) and then how mine
Is sitting before
I started the yoke and where o am
Now. Any input appreciated!

Also
I am using the same yarn as the
Person who’s modifications I am
