Power Issue Under Load Erratically

• Upvotes

Looking for similar experiences and solutions.

I had an issue on a recent trip. The bike would stutter on hills and under a heavier load, like it wasn't getting fuel or the spark plug was fouled.

When I would shift from 5th to 4th around 5k, it would stutter. It would do it in any gear and around the 5k mark. It would last for about 3 minutes, then the bike would return to normal. During that time, I could run the bike at about 4500 rpm (65/70). It would stutter but keep going.

What I tried:

-Choking the bike when it did this - no change

-Stopped and opened the gas tank to check the tank valve - no change

-Used reserve on the petcock setting - no change

-Reset the plug wire and checked for a loose plug.

-Added a cleaner at half a tank.

What I think I should look at first:

-Petcock diaphragm - I think I should just replace or delete.

-New plug wire

-Change vacuum lines

-Carb service (I don't think it's the carb)

Other things are maybe the coil or some issue where an electrical part is getting too hot. But I have a hard time considering this, as I can ride the bike until it stops. I would stop at first and let it cool, then I just kept riding to see if it would change and it would go away.

Help! Just a rant about my beautiful KLR

• Upvotes

Hey guys.

I'm having a really pissy day and I just need to get some stuff off my chest. Two weeks ago, I bought a beautiful orange 2011 KLR in like-new condition. I love this bike. Since then, one of the touring bag lids flew off and got ran over by a car. I've beaten it straight and put it back on, before permanently securing the hinges in place so it won't happen again. Then while attempting to check the front tire pressure, the valve stem snapped and fell off in my hand, causing the tire to instantly go flat. No big deal, or so I thought.

So I ordered two new heavy-duty tubes. While installing one, it got a pinch flat, so I put the other one in. While reinstalling the tire, the bike fell off of it's stand, cracking the Cee Bailey touring windshield down the corner, and breaking the mirror off. It also got a nice scratch in the gas tank.

ATP I feel like I just can't win in life. Why does everything have to be so damn hard? I'm a broke college student, and I can't afford to be fixing all of this crap, which, admittedly, has been 80% my fault. Oh yeah, and while the bike was down, one of my brakelines on the car randomly burst open, causing me to nearly crash into a tree. FML. I swear if this new tube goes flat tomorrow and sends me into a tree, I'll just accept the fact that the universe hates my guts and wants me dead.

So I just impulse-purchased a set of Dirt Racks full-body crash bars. All in, I just basically spent $450+ for the bars and in the cost of the broken windshield and mirror over a stupid $15 tube. What a day. What a day.

Mechanical Advice Centre stands

Does any use and recommend any of this single stick centre stands that aren't physically attached to the bike? I need someone for supporting my bike but a centre stand is a little big for my budget atm, and I am not in a position to buy a box/jack because I'm not living anywhere permanently. I've seen videos of the stands that you effectively lean the bike on but they're always used on dirt bikes that are considerably lighter

Mechanical Advice Weird burning smell gen3

2023 with 2,700 miles

Can anyone advise me on what I might be smelling? At stoplights I get this weird burning smell and then when I get off the bike at home it’s even stronger. It doesn’t smell like gas but more like really strong exhaust smell.

It looks like I have this carbon residue on the outside of the exhaust and there’s this rubber bushing that is laying right against the exhaust. Maybe it’s burning?

I did take this off road and through a few puddles the other day, but I was smelling the smell before I got the exhaust bike wet

2007, 18000 miles

I picked this up this summer after selling my first bike. Did a few minor upgrades. Took her out for a ride in the rain and at night both for the first time. It's been such a great bike. The thought is that I am spending this first summer getting used to riding/communing to work then next summer I am going back to plan a small moto camping trip.l

Loving my KLR after getting it in April. Super fun to ride down dirt roads then cruising on back roads looking for new dirt roads to ride down. Added the milk crate so I can put random stuff in it.

Mechanical Advice My 2002 klr650 loses power at 4-4.5k rpm

It starts and idles just fine, even runs good up until the 4-4.5k rpm mark, it bogs/loses power and backfires and won’t rev any higher.
I’ve cleaned the carb and reset to recommend specs, new spark plug, new intake boot

Gen 3 rear shock on a Gen 1?

Heyo! My rear shock on my '01 is pretty crapped out and needs a replace or rebuild. I am curious if it's worth sniping around ebay for a used shock off a Gen 3? Will it bolt up on a Gen 1 bike, and is there much improvement over the g1 shock? I'd love some preload adjustment which I think the newer bikes have. Any advice is appreciated, cogent is the best but hard to drop 1k on a klr especially in this economy. Looking for budget options that still feel like an upgrade.

Windshield height issues

New KLR owner got a gen 3 2025 and I cannot get the windshield right.

I use the highest base setting right now, I've tried a riser but the wind buffeting around my head was so bad it made me dizzy after a 45 mins ride.

So right now I'm just dealing with the wind hitting me right in the face instead of going above and bufffeting.

I'm 5'10 on a regular KLR.

What are you guys doing or got working? Should I get one of the risers I can adjust?

So I changed to a 16 tooth sprocket, I understand this should increase my top end speed. It did in 1st-4th. But in 5th I lost 10mph. My top speed was 98, it is about 85 now. But every other gear is faster. Anyone have any ideas.

For multiple reasons I have been unable to ride for about 3 months and it has been killing me. Every day seeing others out on theirs. Days of perfect weather. It was killing me! I finally am able to ride again and I couldn't be happier. Be safe out there ✌🏻

Just got into the KLR game and picked up a bike that has had just about everything done to it that one would want to do to it (except for the mirrors for some reason... got double takes on the way).

I think I've found the perfect companion for my 4runner!

Vacuum hose going to fuel tank petcock is looking kinked. Could this be why my bike is dying at higher rpms and regular running temperatures?

Post image

The bike has been stuttering at higher rmps, anywhere above 45mph in 5th gear. I checked and I have spark, fuel and compression now Ive began to look at the fuel delivery system. I’ve seen people gut the petcock to make it a manual delivery system so no need for the vacuum, if this hose is kinked would that lead to no vacuum and a loss of fuel?

Help! 1984 KLR 600 A1 clank noise and metal crankcase

I have a 1984 klr600 with 6k miles. The other day I kicked it over and had it warming up with the choke on so about 3k rpm. I heard what sounded something bouncing around in the lower left case for about 10 seconds. Had to ride home from work roughly 3 miles. Bike ran and seemingly shifted fine.

I started on the rotor side. Doo hickey and lever were all on one piece and everything looks to be in good order. Next I took off the clutch cover to access the oil screen. That’s when I found the chunks of metal ( it is magnetic) and bits of black plastic/rubber almost like chain guide material.

My question is what do you think I’m looking at or what do you think may have failed. Only part I haven’t removed yet is the valve cover.

I have photos but I am not sure how to attach them
