Discussion Would you play a Kingdoms of Amalur MMORPG? What if we could turn Reckoning into a shared online world?
I've been thinking about a project that I think could be really interesting, and before investing time into it, I'd like to hear what the community thinks.
Kingdoms of Amalur has an amazing foundation for an MMORPG: beautiful fantasy world, action combat, tons of abilities, loot, crafting, factions, dungeons, and a lot of existing content.
Imagine being able to explore that world with other players, form parties, fight world bosses, run dungeons, trade equipment, join guilds, and progress through a persistent online world.
Rather than building an entirely new game from scratch, the idea would be to investigate whether the existing PC game could be extended through a community modding project.
I know this would be a technically challenging project. Multiplayer movement is one thing, but synchronizing combat, enemies, loot, quests, and persistent character progression is a completely different challenge. I'm not claiming any of this is already working.
For some context, I'm the developer behind a project that rebuilt World of Warcraft 1.12.1 to run directly in the browser. Here's that project:
Before committing to this idea, I'd like to know:
- Would you genuinely play this? Would you prefer co-op, a small persistent MMO world, or something closer to a full MMORPG?
- What would make it worth playing? New dungeons, raids, world bosses, guilds, crafting, PvP, or something else?
- Would you play the original game with multiplayer added, or would you want new content and progression systems?
- Would anyone here be interested in helping with the technical side, especially reverse engineering, game modding, networking, or multiplayer development?
I'm trying to gauge genuine interest and understand what people would want before committing to a project of this scale.
If enough people are interested, the next step would be investigating the game's technical feasibility and putting together a small proof of concept.
Curious to hear your thoughts!

Co-op would be cool, but I'd honestly do whatever you feel like is the best fit for you and what you would actually finish.

Red Dead Redemption 2, Skyrim, Morrowind...all have online RPG servers running in the worlds of these games. If you could do something like that for Amalur I would be in. The only thing that would keep me away from it would be douchebag Moderators that don't know how to have fun and crush the soul out of the game. If that could be avoided as much as possible I would play.

I think an MMO-lite coop experience would be badass but I don’t think retooling the game into a full mmo would work well, the character progression doesn’t support it and like you kinda touched on you’d have to add raid bosses and just change all the balance so massively to arrive there.

I think this game would facilitate co-op better than an MMO to be honest. It would also be monumentally easier to do as well. I like the bones of an MMO that amalur has, but I feel like it ends up being much more akin to a "looter shooter" than anything else by design. The Copernicus project that they were developing even deviated a good bit from the design philosophies of KoA so it seems like they were even pretty cognizant of the deviations that were required even if KoA originated from an MMO.

I think the idea of what an MMO is needs to be revisited in general, but I don't think it would be a very enjoyable experience. It would just be the same game but now there are people around competing for mobs for quests, and there's no reason to keep playing at the end.

Did you know that had an internal version of the game that was actively being beta tested that had co-op?
Apparently a party of 4 players/developers was running around together, having a blast, and it was cut due to design creep and timing (as the project was grossly mismanaged in both time and budget)

That was the original plan, they were working on an MMO follow up. Creative team was on top of their end. The business manglement couldn’t get loans because no investors wanted to risk funding a new IP to go head to head with Elder Scrolls 5(Skyrim) as a gateway to go up against WoW.
Instead Shilling used sleazy connections to highjack a fund intended for Rhode Island small businesses. It was just enough to launch the game but they couldn’t keep up with the loan payments, salaries etc.

An accurate assessment of the failure.
The Providence Journal covered the story in great depth but the content is paywalled.

The MMO space is quite saturated, and it would require building things from the ground up almost .
I have nothing against the idea, but I don't think the juice would be worth the squeeze for the devs.

I've played a lot of MMOs over the decades, I do play coop games, too, but for KoA I want neither. Not every game needs to have some sort of social aspect or live services.
If we ever get KoA2 I hope it's singleplayer as well. To be honest, I'm kind of tired of chasing battle passes, raids, extraction PvPvE and all that nonsense.

Even though it was originally designed to be a MMO, I think it would make a good series to turn into a online co-op game but nothing more that 3-4 players.

Yes! co-op world and dungeouns and pvp only in the arenas with matchmaking if at all possible.

I would. I think it has the bones for it. My main interest would be they keep the structure of the map. Where it's open world, but contained clean with those beautiful map information details and they just keep adding new areas like each map on updates. Detyre, erathell, and east, naros, kel, etc..
So the MMO was largely single player with certain dungeons in the regions where it's group of AI companions to fill it in (players choice) and certain regions and content where it was heavily mmo focused. Like the arena or challenge towers,fishing,etc..
So like you could do something like have the single player dungeons with the sidequests in the regions. But add 3 group or AI fill in in order to complete the region or maybe even turn it into a chaos region after completion or make properties available after for purchasing ownership shares in like fable but shared somehow. Like it generates profit if you buy in, and whoever owns the most of something controls design, what the shop carries,etc.. I have no idea how you could do the economy to that scale, just the idea would nice and that would cover grind I guess for mmo interests w/o ruining things.

Something I've learnt from this community is that they really dont want an Amalur-MMO, not even Copernicus, even if it wouldnt stop a possible Reckoning-sequel. Trust me. Just check out the comments in my old thread after the reading the main post https://www.reddit.com/r/kingdomsofamalur/comments/1ke64w9/ex38_studios_devs_wish_for_project_copernicus/ . The copernicus-fanbase is long gone. This thread will most likely be downvoted to h*ll. I would play it though!
