KDE Apps and Projects Kool Desktop Launcher for Plasma 6

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

53 Upvotes

Check out that radial launcher App called KARYON, that I made to improve my workflow (vape with left hand + compute with right hand). For a clean Desktop without Task- or Traybar, including Mudltimedia Controls and Gestures. NO Touchpad support (for now).

Please check it out and leave some feedback, that would be very much appreciated. Avaliable as simple AppImage. https://github.com/eiseneuter/karyon/releases

Before anyone asks: it's a customized Otto theme.

Cheers,
eisen

Anyway, you probably want to check if your /var/lib/systemd/coredump contains dozens, if not hundreds of crash dumps. If it's happening, see the link for a temporary fix.

Question Context menus are so wide they look like a bridge... Why did the width calculation change?

Post image
38 Upvotes

I really appreciate the massive amount of work the KDE team puts in, as well as how much the desktop has evolved (Plasma 6 is fast and rock solid), but there’s a small UI detail that’s been frustrating me for a while.

The desktop context menu has become so wide that it literally looks like a bridge across the screen. I know this has been happening since the later versions of Plasma 5, but back in the early Plasma 5 days (like around Debian 10 / Buster), the interface was much prettier, sleeker, and more compact.

I get that the popup stretches to fit the longest line or keyboard shortcut (like Ctrl+Shift+D), but having the entire menu deform just because of a single entry leaves a huge, unnecessary blank gap for all the other items.

As a user who wants to see the desktop get better and better, I’m genuinely curious about the reasoning behind this design choice. Does anyone else find this width calculation awkward, or know if there's a setting in Breeze to get back that tighter, classic layout?

General Bug Contextual menu on ctrl+c: is a bug or a feature?

Post image

If I copy with ctrl+c the url in ungoogled-chrome I got this contextual menu. Not sure how to disable. It happens randomly in other part of kde but I never put attention before, but can't replicate.

Question X11-apocalypse mutual support thread

39 Upvotes

Hi!

Now that 6.8 is here and X11 is dropped, I have to figure out new scripts and workarounds to repair, approximate, or abandon long-standing workflows. I'm guessing there are others in the same boat.

I thought we could have a central thread to help each other find solutions to these issues.

My own status:

Old Tool Problem Potential Solutions
espanso App-specific config not available for Wayland, so it's broken in e.g. terminal windows Set ctrl+shift+v as the paste shortcut globally, since this pastes anyway
libinput-gestures Hard-coded mandatory KWin gestures interfere Unknown
xdotool permissions issues and functionality unclear on Wayland Figure out proper permissions policy, or use ydotool (but this doesn't support e.g. relative mouse movements, or getactivewindow, or windowminize)
xprop no go on Wayland Maybe some qdbus call
wmctrl no go on Wayland, AFAICT Unknown
xclip no go on Wayland wl-copy
window shading devs announced intention to reject any reimplementations, while being open to alternatives, but not specifying what must be different to be acceptable minimize + a task manager configured to only show minimized windows (not the same), or https://github.com/stefanq/kde-wayland-window-shading (no decorator button/indicator support)

General Bug Issues with new plasma 6.8 (Arch)

13 Upvotes

Plasma 6.8 has just arrived on my arch and I had to modify in the screen configuration the setting related to color precision to "prefer color precision" because the "prefer efficiency" one was making the screen gray flicker to a very bright white. Moreover the unlocking of lockscreen with fingerprint is not been presented anymore (it used to work perfectly before). Is anyone facing these issues? Is there a way to fix them?

General Bug Wayland does not support 4k 60hz on my monitor

3 Upvotes

Using Arch and a Samsung 4k television and the latest update forced the removal of x11 session. X11 display config picked up 3840x2160 with 60 Hz just fine. With Wayland I can only set 3840x2160 at 30 Hz or less. 1920x1080 does offer 60 Hz. Tried multiple cables. Tried using Displayport. No changes.

Question kscreenctl - any way to run multiple commands simultaneously?

3 Upvotes

I want to use the new kscreenctl as I do kscreen-doctor, which is mostly to change a few output options at once via steam launch options. with kscreen-doctor I use:

kscreen-doctor output.DP-1.mode.2 output.DP-1.colorPowerTradeoff.preferEfficiency output.DP-1.iccprofile."";

and again to restore normal settings on game exit. it'd be nice if something similar or more compact is possible with the new software, e.g.

kscreenctl [output] set-mode set-color-power-tradeoff set-icc-profile

so far I haven't figured anything out beyond running kscreenctl separately for each command, but that takes so much space and might not even work properly with steam launch options.

kscreenctl [output] set-mode [output] set-color-power-tradeoff etc. does not appear to work.

I wonder if using LACT to exec scripts on profile change would be the way to go.

~~~~~~
EDIT: While it would be nice to have inline commands sorted out, for now, I'm just running simple shell scripts on game launch and exit via launch options. my CS2 launch options, for example:
$HOME/.sh_files/144Hz.sh; SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=wayland SDL_AUDIO_DRIVER=pulse chrt -r 11 taskset -c 1-5 strangle 144.44 --vulkan-only %command% -w 960 -h 720 -threads 5 -nojoy +exec cs2exec.cfg +clientport 27027; $HOME/.sh_files/120Hz.sh
Steam launch option structure as far as I can figure out, sections divided by semicolons:
[system] [commands]; [game] [environment] [commands] %command% [-game] [-flags] [+and] [+commands]; [system-commands] [to-run-after-game-exit]
I have a (hidden) folder in my home directory (.sh_files) for a few scripts and links to configs. the contents of the executable 144Hz.sh & 120Hz.sh:
#!/bin/bash
# 144Hz
# run "kscreenctl list-modes" in console to ID your displays and modes/mode #s
kscreenctl DP-1 set-mode 2
kscreenctl DP-1 set-color-power-tradeoff prefer-efficiency
kscreenctl DP-1 set-color-profile-source sRGB
#!/bin/bash
# 120Hz
# run "kscreenctl list-modes" in console to ID your displays and modes/mode #
kscreenctl DP-1 set-mode 3
kscreenctl DP-1 set-color-power-tradeoff prefer-accuracy
kscreenctl DP-1 set-color-profile-source ICC
kscreenctl DP-1 set-icc-profile $HOME/icc_current.icc
icc_current.icc is a link to my current ICC profile
This white outline around steam looks totally out of place for me, it only looks good on dark mode, can i disable it?
I tried removing the window rules ALT+F3 -> Window settings, but it keeps resetting.
Question Giant virtual keyboard at login screen
5 Upvotes
Hey pals, is there a way to disable this giant virtual keyboard at login screen? I can't find any settings to do so.
I know I can hide it just clicking the "hide key" there, but it's annoying doing so every boot.
And when hiding it and clicking on the password field, it shows it again.
Question KDE 6.8 slows down my games.
I restored the system to a snapshot with KDE 6.7.5, and everything is working perfectly again. I marked this as a "Question" because I don't know if it's a bug or something I'm doing wrong, I'm not an expert on these kinds of issues. Is anyone else experiencing this?
I did the update with Shelly, and I'm sharing some details about the system in case it's helpful.
Thank u.
KDE Apps and Projects made a spotify lyrics widget for plasma 6
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
0 Upvotes
been messing with this for a bit and figured i’d share. it shows synced lyrics next to your album art on the desktop, and you can pick colors straight from the album cover so it kinda matches whatever’s playing
also has some dumb fun stuff like glowy/rainbow lyric effects, borders around the art that react to the music (needs cava), and it can blur your wallpaper behind the lyrics. hover the art for play/pause/skip
it’s on the store, just search “spotify lyrics” in get new widgets, or grab it here:
store: https://store.kde.org/p/2379002
github: https://github.com/ocelotshark/plasmoid-spotify-lyrics
lmk if something breaks lol
