The Shrine Champion doing battle with a Black Lion
Every year, a new hopeful becomes shrine champion by defeating all challengers in sumo competition. The champion is then responsible for defending the shrine from the Black Lion, or Kurojishi. Somiya Shrine (総宮神社) in Nagai City, Yamagata Prefecture is a historic Shinto shrine, celebrated as the birthplace and spiritual home of the Kurojishi (Black Lion) Dance. Founded in 802 by Shogun Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, the shrine has protected the region for over a millennium. It serves as a central spiritual hub where the legendary Kurojishi traditions come alive.
