OS-Z version 1.8.1 marks a major turning point in the history of Jean-Héon. For the very first time, software from our company is expanding to support three new hardware architectures on Linux: RISC-V, LoongArch, and PowerPC.
This update represents far more than a mere technical evolution. It signals our commitment to exploring new hardware horizons and preparing for a future beyond the currently dominant x86 and ARM architectures.
🌐 RISC-V: Paving the Way for the Post-x86 and Post-ARM Era
OS-Z becomes the first Jean-Héon software to support the RISC-V architecture. RISC-V is to hardware what Linux is to operating systems: an open instruction set architecture that represents a promising path for the future of computing.
We undertook the porting of OS-Z to this architecture with a long-term perspective: to explore the possibilities offered by alternative platforms and to help prepare for a computing future less dependent on the x86 and ARM ecosystems.
There is still a long road ahead, but we believe that architectural diversification is a sound approach for the years to come.
🇨🇳 LoongArch: Opening Up New Horizons
We have also ported OS-Z to LoongArch64, an architecture associated with the Chinese computing ecosystem.
This initiative broadens the hardware horizons of OS-Z and allows us to explore an additional architectural environment, moving beyond the platforms traditionally favored by the industry.
🖥️ PowerPC: Because You Never Know! 🤷♂️
Finally, OS-Z is arriving on Linux for the PowerPC 64 (ppc64) architecture.
Why? Because you never know!
After all, maybe one day MrBeast will decide to test our games and software in a video titled:"Gaming on a $50,000 IBM server!"*
MrBeast, if you're reading this, we actually have a PowerPC port for you to test! 👀
Okay, fair enough we admit that’s not exactly the most likely scenario. 😂
But who knows? Computing sometimes holds surprises, and we prefer to keep the door open to the most unexpected possibilities!
🔭 Jean-Héon: A bright future
With version 1.8.1 of OS-Z, Jean-Héon takes another step forward in its commitment to hardware openness.
RISC-V, LoongArch, and PowerPC represent three new avenues for our software to explore. This evolution reflects our desire not to limit our horizons to a single processor type or computing ecosystem.
The post-x86 and post-ARM eras won't be built overnight. However, we want to start exploring these possibilities today.
The future of computing could be more diverse, more open, and more surprising than we imagine.
And at Jean-Héon, we fully intend to explore that future one architecture at a time.
TO INFINITY AND BEYOND! 🚀
