📜Travel Story Had an unexpected medical emergency on an overnight train, and Indian Railways genuinely surprised me with how responsive they were.

I just wanted to share a positive experience with Indian Railways because I honestly didn’t expect things to work out this well.

I am currently travelling on an overnight train (Kaveri express) , the silicone tip of my wireless earbud got stuck inside my left ear. I initially thought I could manage it myself, but I accidentally pushed it further in while trying to remove it. I started experiencing a blocked sensation and mild burning, and naturally, I got worried.

I contacted railway helpline 139 and raised an emergency request. They called me back and asked whether I needed an ambulance. Eventually, railway staff and RPF got involved, and arrangements were made for a doctor to meet my train at Jolarpettai.

The doctor examined my ear and removed the silicone tip effortlessly, without causing any pain. He also checked for bleeding afterwards.

What genuinely surprised me was the responsiveness. I was on a moving train in the middle of the night, worried about and whether I’d have to abandon my journey.

Instead of being left to figure everything out myself, people took my concern seriously and helped coordinate medical assistance.

I’m not saying every experience will be the same, and I’m sure the system has its challenges. But tonight, when I genuinely needed help, the railway staff and medical team came through for me.

We often hear complaints about public services, and many of them may be justified. But I think positive experiences deserve to be shared, too.

And grateful for experience as it was fun but thankfully didn’t turn serious.

⛔Travel Issue Reserved seat of mine btw

Post image
• Upvotes

So sorry for my language but yea gareeb aur inki maa ki cxxut.

Bruh this is my reserve seat and at night I ended up sharing my seat, like seriously ? I literally warned them that I will call RPF if they keep doing like this but it seems like they don't even care.

Just cause it was an emergency that's why I am travelling on sleeper but surely this is going to be my last time ever though.

🎓 Tutorial Found a way to book unreserved ticket while in train

Post image

I found a method that seems to let you book an unreserved ticket through the RailOne app even when you're already inside the train.

Here's what I did:

When your train reaches a station, open mystationqr.com and get the QR code for that station.

Take a photo of the QR code. You can use another device or ask a co-passenger or someone nearby to help you scan or photograph it.

Open the RailOne app and select the option to book an unreserved ticket.

Select “At Station” and choose the station your train has just reached as your starting station(scan the qr code that you have taken before), with your destination as the endpoint.

When the app asks for location permission, enable it and proceed with the booking as usual.

That's it!

Has anyone tried it before? Is there any other methods

📜Travel Story The other side of "Don't give up your seat"

Everyone seems to be boasting about how they didn't give up their seats lately and they are proud of it. While it's really good that you didn't bow down to those who are entitled and selfish, let me tell you an another side.

My family (me, mom, dad) were travelling in 2AC if I remember correctly. My mother is handicapped in her legs but we didn't know at the time about selection of such options while booking the ticket.

After boarding the train we talked with TTE and he is helpless as well.

Then in the lower berth, there was a guy of my age. He is studying in IIT palakkad and his native is somewhere else. We requested him can you please swap the seat so my mom can sit somewhere peacefully. He didn't even respond and gave a cold no. So we did not ask anymore. We asked other persons in the train and the nearby people were also unwilling to do so.

So my dad tried to help her climb the stairs by holding her but it wasn't be successful. On seeing our attempt to climb it, a person who saw this said one of the person in our group wants to sleep now so you can swap seats. We were relieved finally.

While I understand saying no to those who feel entitled to your seat, or asking it for pure convenience I can understand it and I have also said so in some situations. But in some situations, I we feel like their reason is genuine like being with a child or health issues, I'd say give them a benefit of doubt and empathy goes a long way if it doesn't affect your journey much. The indifference that supposedly educated guy had still is in my mind.

📜Travel Story What do I even say or do

Vande Bharat 22477 journey 13 oct . A group of 10–12 guys boarded along many from NDLS it's boarding and starting ot ... dikhne mein well-dressed aur educated lag rahe the, but behaviour-wise… well guess urself ..

Pehle toh seats saath mein chahiye thi, jiske liye sabko thoda preshan kiya (which is still okay, standard train stuff). But the real drama started next.

Uthna baithna fir mil gyi adjust krlo .. nahi ab kuch inme se apas m seat change Krna chahte h .. and after a few settling minutes 10-20 they couldn't resist more ..

Pura group utha aur door k pass jo area hota h vande Bharat mein .. inside the coach side .. us area ke paas zameen par dera laga ke baith gaye kuch inme se . Kyun? Because taash (cards) khelnaa tha ! 🃏 Completely blocking the pathway to the washrooms. Intentional preshan karna nahi tha, but basic awareness ka level zero tha... They would give way to go I guess but Krna kyuuuu haiiiii ..

Atleast vande Bharat has evening snacks ... So they were back to seats because of it ..

Fir halla gulla because inko kya mtlb k koi sona b chahta h train m ..

Everytime they talking loudly getting up and putting pressure while getting up on the next seat ..

Guess whose seat was in front where one of them was frequently getting up and down putting pressure on the seat ..

Yours truly my sleep and peace was on the seat ..

Idk what to even say now or do ..

Don't mind my typo ..

While I was getting off the train they wanted to go out and have cig break.. so got the chance to click the picture ..

📜Travel Story Just Came to my knowledge that Middle Aged Aunties Refer to Sex as Aanand Or " आनंद "

Thumbnail

I was travelling in Dakshin Express today and saw two middle aged aunties sitting together and discussing purana ( Ancient Hindu Book) texts with each other

Basically they were telling each other the stories of how world started and how women was created and the story goes on something like this

" Lord brahma only created men first and in ancient times the men use to reproduce with the power of their mind and because of that their was no concept of marriage and families, so men were only created to serve the society till a certain age and after reaching that age they use to submit themselves to tapsya ( Giving your life to meditation )

So after some time men started feeling that there is some kind of thirst or craving inside them and to satisfy that thirst they started committing some sinful acts with each other ( you know what they mean 😨)

When brahma noticed them he felt there is someone needed for men to have Aanand With them at night ( Aunty used these exact words 💀) , and there is also a need for someone to take care of Household and children whenever men go for doing their daily deeds or tapsya

So he created women or female gender, but to create balance in universe and to give more purpose to women rather than just existing to serve men lord brahma gave women the power to produce children as well, so from that day whenever men had to create children they can only do it with the help of women and there is no other option "

The story was interesting but today I found out how different the boomer generation think than us Genz

I was still thinking about it and after hearing that story my interest in Holy texts has suddenly increased.

📽️Video [By @indianrailwayslovers97] Yuva express, the forgotten concept of IR (Info in description)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Credits & source for the video. The one in the video features Howrah - Anand Vihar Yuva express.

Intro(Long story, TL;DR at bottom)

A lot of unique trains get introduced which gives it a distinct identity as Rajdhani for its prestige, Shatabdi was its faster intercity journey & Duronto for its non-stop service. Yuva express was one of them too.

What tf is Yuva express?

Introduced in the year 2009 along with its sibling Duronto express, Yuva express was a unique concept when it came to affordability.

Introduced by former RM Mamata Banerjee during the rail-budget 2009-2010, Yuva express was started with an ambition to provide cheaper services for unemployed young people & passengers from lower-income groups who could travel between major cities without paying the higher fares commonly associated with air-conditioned long-distance services.

The term "Yuva" means "Youth" & since the target passenger for these trains were youth, hence the name Yuva.

The features:

The defining feature of this fully Air-conditioned train was the Yuva Quota. Initially, 60% of the accommodation was reserved for eligible Yuva(Youth) passengers, with the remaining 40% available to general passengers.

Eligible passengers aged 15-45 could take the benefits of Yuva Quota at specially reduced fares. IIRC, the fare up to 1,500 km was Rs. 299 per person while fare above 1,500 & up to 2,500 was Rs. 399 per person.

Initially, this train consisted of only Chair-car coaches. However, compared to standard ICF Chair-car, Yuva express Chair-car had more seats on any Chair-car train in IR's history with 103 seats(3x3 layout) which was higher than 73 seats of an ICF Chair-car & even higher than LHB/Vande Bharat's Chair-car's 78 seats.

Just like general coaches, Yuva express had 6 doors(3 doors on each side) due to the higher number of seats which means higher frequency of passengers so the additional doors were added for passenger convenience for getting in/out of the train.

The livery of this train was distinct from several other IR trains & it matched the scheme of Duronto a lot since both were started by the same person in the same year.

The total number of Yuva express trains.

The first Yuva train, connecting Howrah and Delhi, commenced service on 30 December 2009. A second service connecting Mumbai and Hazrat Nizamuddin followed in January 2010.

Unlike Duronto express which expanded further in the network of IR despite having its own flaws, only two Yuva express made it to the mainline.

The failures of Yuva express.

Despite the great ambitions & a cheap service for many passengers, Yuva express failed to match the expectations of many people for major reasons.

First was the underused Yuva Quota which was the crucial issue. Initially, 60% of the accommodation was allocated to eligible Yuva passengers. However, many reports stated that occupancy of special quota had fallen below 15%. In response to low demand, the Railways reduced the Yuva Quota from 60% to 20% in 2012, in just 3 years. At the end of 2013, the occupancy was again underused to the point that the Yuva Quota was reduced from 20 to 10%, meaning that 90% of passengers could afford it at normal fares.

The second major issue was the Chair-car seats for long-distance. Had it been like Intercity, it might've been a successful train however, for a train that goes from Delhi to Mumbai or Delhi to Howrah, Chair-car coaches are just nightmare because who could travel end to end by sitting. Many people already show frustration for Pune-Ajni(Nagpur) Vande Bharat being a long distance train with Chair-car seats so the preference for long distance Chair-car ain't a great option unless something like High-speed rail gets introduced which could cut several hours. That's why both Yuva got AC 3-tier coaches to cover up losses.

Another reason for what I could find was the strict eligibility criteria that you must prove you are an unemployed Youth at the age of 18-45 to travel in it & have produce official documents like a National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) card or a State Employment Exchange registration certificate. Plus the Yuva Quota was very niche too which didn't appealed everyone.

Even if it had succeeded, the future problem may have been the cramped Chair-car coaches. As I've mentioned before, it had the highest number of Chair-car seats that a train could ever have. Tho it wasn't the major issue for its failure but it had less room for each passenger than in a conventional layout so just like Garib Rath's infamous Side-middle-Berth, Yuva express could've turned like Garib Rath only if it had succeeded.

The poor occupancy was also the reason why half of the coaches of Yuva express got replaced with conventional ICF premium AC 3-tier coaches.

The fate of these two Yuva express:

The first Yuva express was Howrah - Anand Vihar Yuva express but ironically, it was the first & only Yuva that was cancelled during COVID-19 & IR just never introduced it again. It had RSA with Howrah - Jalpaiguri AC express which also got permanently cancelled too.

The second Yuva express is Bandra - Hazrat Nizamuddin Yuva express which was the second Yuva express, it was the only Yuva express which survived & is still currently active today. During its final days as ICF, it only had a handful of Yuva express livered coaches with very few Red/Duronto coaches but it was heavily diluted with Ut****st coaches. It eventually got converted to LHB coaches with two blue LHB Chair-car coaches & the rest of them are typical red LHB 3-tier coaches which look pretty bizarre in appearance. It still retained the Yuva Quota even after many years.

Conclusion:

Yuva Express was an ambitious attempt to make AC travel affordable for young & lower-income passengers but low occupancy & limited appeal hindered its success.

Even if it had become commercially successful, its cramped seating might still have attracted criticism.

Ultimately, it remains an interesting experiment that struggled to balance affordability, passenger comfort, & demand.

TL;DR:

Introduced in 2009, Yuva Express aimed to make AC travel affordable for unemployed youth & lower-income passengers through specially reduced fares & a dedicated quota. However, low demand for the quota & the limitations of long-distance Chair Car travel hindered its success. Its unusually cramped seating could also have attracted criticism, much like Garib Rath's infamous side-middle berths. Of the two services introduced, Howrah - Anand Vihar was cancelled during the COVID-19 period & was never started again while Bandra Terminus - Hazrat Nizamuddin survived with red LHB(Plus 2 Chair-car LHB) coaches. Ultimately, Yuva Express was an ambitious experiment that struggled to balance affordability, passenger comfort & demand.

Apology for any mistake, have a nice day!

Ask r/IndianRailways Civic sense in Indian trains — why do people hide garbage instead of disposing of it properly

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

People often hide garbage in corners or near the edges of train roofs instead of disposing of it properly. Hiding waste doesn't make the train clean. We need better civic sense, accessible dustbins, and responsible passengers. Cleanliness is everyone's responsibility, not just railway staff's.

The nearest metro gate to NDLS from Metro doesn't have escalators. It's getting tough to drag the big bags like two story building stairs. Are any other exit gate escalators?

⛔Travel Issue The Audacity...

Post image
279 Upvotes

I don’t understand the audacity of some people who occupy the upper berths to sleep in general coaches, refusing to get up and sit even when people are standing right next to them and asking them to get up.

Like, have some basic consideration for others! It’s a general coach, and everyone deserves a place to sit
