I’m honestly tired of seeing medicinal herbs like comfrey (Symphytum officinale) labelled as toxic without discussing the actual circumstances behind the studies.
Let’s look at the reported cases:
1. Bach et al. (1989)
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2741990/
Up to 10 cups of comfrey tea daily PLUS tablets for over a year. Outcome: Serious liver injury.
2. Weston et al. (1987)
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1247038/
A 13-year-old consumed comfrey-containing tea for approximately 2–3 years, with the exact dosage unknown. Outcome: Liver injury.
3. Yeong et al. (1990)
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2103401/
A 23-year-old reportedly ate 4–5 comfrey leaves daily for around two weeks. Outcome: Fatal liver failure.
4. Scientific review (2018)
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5894094/
Discusses a case involving approximately six months of consumption, with an estimated exposure of at least 85 mg of toxic alkaloids. Outcome: Serious liver injury.
Here’s my point: DOSAGE AND CONTEXT MATTER.
Even excessive water consumption can be dangerous. The same applies to food, cloves, other herbs, supplements, and pharmaceutical medications.
Everything deserves a proper dose-dependent evaluation.
I’m not denying these reported injuries. I’m questioning why the quantities, duration, and circumstances aren’t discussed more openly.
Some cases involved prolonged or unusually heavy consumption, while others show that serious injury can also occur after shorter exposure with alot of intake in a short period.
Why are medicinal herbs so often reduced to a simple “toxic” label, while pharmaceutical drugs are discussed in terms of dosage, benefits, and risks and never put in bad daylight i wonder why? 🤣 🤑
I’m tired of the double standards. Traditional medicinal plants deserve transparent, balanced scientific discussion, not fear-based oversimplification.
Show the studies. Show the doses. Show the full context. Let people judge the evidence.
