Pets & Animals Was your child(ren) driving an e-scooter or e-bike tonight @ 8pm in Dartmouth Crossing?

• Upvotes

If so, they were chasing geese on them in the old toys r us parking lot. One was on an e-bike, the other on an e-scooter. Both were wearing helmets that cover their entire head and face.
I pulled into the parking lot upon seeing this and parked near the geese. I didn't confront them. The presents of my car was enough for them to stop and take off.
I hope a parent or sibling sees this and can have a conversation about respecting animals.
Maybe take them to Hope for Wildlife could help?
Don't fuck with the geese please.

News, Weather & Politics Mammograms no appointments until 2028

I'm due for a mammogram and I called they have said there are no appointments for rest of this year 2026, all of 2027 and they are now booking out to 2028. Imagine how many breast cancers metastasize in that time which is the difference between a treatable cancer and a death sentence.

Weekly update on restaurant closures.

✅Looks like A2Z fixed everything and reopened after October 8, 2026.
🛑It appears that both Ragazzi and Happy Garden are still closed. I think this could be one of the longest closures we have seen (or noticed lol). I couldn't find any new inspections for both those places (they both have a long list of things that they need to fix).

📣Fun fact for the week - 26/28 places that were shutdown by the Health Department is in HRM. That's almost 93%.

❗️❕ It appears that Pourdad Coffee is still on the list. Hopefully they fix it soon, if it's a genuine glitch

Edit note : even though it looks like it, the text is not AI generated. I am against AI slop and data centers, if anyone's wondering.

Discussion What's the deal with the cost of living?

My brother's apartment in HIGHFIELD is going up to $1500+ [I'm not sure of the exact cost but it's at the $1500 mark.] I say this as respectfully as I can, but how the f*ck can you charge more than $850 for a one-bedroom apartment in HIGHFIELD? No hate to the location, but the buildings? I mean, come the F*ck on. WHAT IS HAPPENING? WHY is nothing being done about the cost of living? Why are people not enraged?! I'm living home because I genuinely cannot afford to move out, and I work a full-time job with semi-decent wages. And don't spout to me some bull that it's ''inflation'' and the economy because that's a load of sh*t. It's greedy people and I'm so tired of it. Aren't you tired of it? Why hasn't this changed? How are they ALLOWED to charge so much for rent? Someone explain this to me, with logic, because I genuinely don't think there is ANY EXCUSE, the cost of everything continues to increase, but wages? GOD FORBID YOU PAY SOMEONE A LIVEABLE WAGE IN 2026. WHAT IS THAT? Why, we're told go-to school, get a good job, and you'll make enough money to buy a house NONSENSE our whole bloody lives, and now EVERY PERSON I KNOW IS STRUGGLING, and people I don't know are struggling, people I talk to at the gas-stations, groceries stores, in passing. EVERY SINGLE PERSON IS STRUGGLING AND IT IS NOT OKAY AND WHY IS NOTHING BEING DONE ABOUT IT?! PS. Apologies for the Caps, I just don't know how else to relay this, but I know I'm not the only one who feels this way, and enough is enough. Something HAS to change.

Schools & Education Potential CUPE Job Actions [HRCE Email]

Text below, will format better in a minute, bold emphasis mine:

Families,

For the past several months, Regional Centres for Education across the province and the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP) have been negotiating with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents a number of school support staff, in an effort to reach renewed collective agreements.

We know that the possibility of any disruption to your child’s learning environment can be stressful, and we want to keep families informed as this process unfolds.

Unfortunately, the conciliator working with the parties has filed a report with the Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration declaring an impasse. This means negotiations are currently at a standstill, and the process that could ultimately lead to job action begins.

Our priority is to reach fair agreements at the bargaining table and avoid any disruption to students and families. At the same time, we have a responsibility to be prepared for the possibility of job action.

Recent CUPE labour action in the long-term care sector demonstrated that we cannot assume services will continue while negotiations remain unresolved. While the circumstances and bargaining processes are different, that experience reinforces the importance of preparing now for the possibility of job action in our schools.

We are developing contingency plans and assessing what different forms of job action could mean for students, families, and school operations.

We will provide families with further information as soon as it becomes available and will provide as much notice as possible should there be any change that affects students or school operations.

In the meantime, here’s what you need to know:

While we remain optimistic, unless a deal can be reached, CUPE has signaled an intent to commence strike action on Monday, October 26. The employee groups that CUPE represents vary throughout the province, meaning the impacts of a strike will be different in each Region and for CSAP.

In HRCE, CUPE members include all term and permanent employees within the following classifications:

Educational Program Assistant (EPA)

Lead Early Childhood Educator

Support Early Childhood Educator

Library Support Specialist

SchoolsPlus Community Outreach Worker

Child and Youth Care Practitioner

Mi’kmaw/Indigenous Student Support Worker

African Nova Scotian Student Support Worker

Assistive Technology Support Worker

Substitutes for abovementioned classifications, where applicable

For clarity, any potential job action does NOT include teachers. CUPE also does not represent EXCEL employees.

The EXCEL program will continue to operate in the event of a CUPE work stoppage.

What happens now?

I recognize that this is unsettling news. I want to assure you that teams at HRCE have been working closely with school Principals in recent weeks to determine how to best support students in the event of any labour disruption.

We are making plans to ensure that students who require the support of EPAs will continue to be able to access educational services reasonably and safely. Principals will begin reaching out to families who will be impacted to discuss these plans.

In the event of a work stoppage, Pre-Primary Programs will be paused.

We remain hopeful that there will soon be a resolution and that these plans won’t be necessary. CUPE has not yet provided the 48-hours' notice as required by the Trade Union Act.

As a reminder, we do not expect any potential strike action by CUPE until Monday, October 26.

We value and respect our employees who are part of CUPE. We know their work is critically important to children, students, families, teachers and staff, and hope to reach a fair deal before any action that affects our classrooms.

I will provide an update on the ongoing talks and contingency planning as new information becomes available.

A very popular Sportsnet personality, I am sure many will be disappointed to not get their book signed. In the past, I don’t recall pre-ordering a spot.

Edit: “ This is a free event. Reservation is not required to join the signing line, but is encouraged to guage attendance.”

Yet it says sold out. I am lost.

Driving & Transit Dashcam footage request?

By any chance did anyone see the dump truck effectively run me off the road on the 118 outbound right by the 107 extension off ramp?

I'm okay and somehow there's no damage, I'm honestly just wondering if it was as dramatic looking as it felt.

For what it's worth the dump truck got close enough to fold my driver's side mirror in before I reacted and went off on the gravel shoulder. I expected to find a bunch of scraped paint down the driver's side of my car but I got extremely lucky.

Edit to add:

I just want to add, this isn't a witch hunt for the truck driver. I actually caught up to him and we figured out that other than having to put my driver's side mirror back in its place there was no damage. There's no issue there. This is just a curiosity thing.

Shops & Services Is Spirit Halloween wheelchair accessible?

The store is usually in a location I can scope out beforehand, but I don't go downtown unless I have a specific goal. This time it's Halloween! 🎃 But the address says suite 200 and I seem to remember the old Goodlife location was indeed on the second floor. So as the title asks, can I get up there?

Shops & Services Guitar teacher for beginner (child)

• Upvotes

My 9yo has decided it is time to learn electric guitar.

I have been playing nearly 40 years, since I was 7, but I really don’t remember much about starting out or having little hands. I also think learning from dad would be fraught so I would like to find a teacher who has experience with kids.

She would prefer a woman but I don’t see any listed at the schools I know of (Maritime Conservatory, L&M), but I am happy for anyone.

An update on Gus the gopher tortoise - October 14th, 2026.

Gus is recovering well with his veterinary team. He has gone for walks which is a great milestone in his post-surgery recovery.

Gus currently has a feeding tube, which helps with feeding and his post-surgery medication.

Gus will remain with his veterinary care team for close observation, before returning to the museum later this week. Gus will be recuperating behind the scenes for the next 8-10 weeks.

Thank you for the continued outpouring of support for Gus. We will continue to share updates on his recovery.

PS Yes, that is Gus’s blankie from the Museum. 💚

Shops & Services Podiatrist Recommendations

I'm looking for recommendations for a podiatrist in Halifax or Dartmouth for a sports injury. I injured my big toe joint early in the summer and its healed most of the way but it just doesn't seem to be getting back to completely normal. I'm very active so I really want to get it back to 100%.

Usually for this type of thing I'd go to a physiotherapist, but thanks to some other injuries this year I'm out of insurance coverage and I can't afford to pay out of pocket. I do however have podiatry coverage that I could use. I had an appointment with a podiatrist this week and they recommended a certain type of running shoe and orthotics, but didn't really address what the actual problem is from the injury. I'm not opposed to getting special shoes/orthotics, but I want to make sure that the actual injury is being addressed and I'm not just masking it with more supportive footware.

Does anyone have recommendations for a podiatrist in the HRM that would give exercises similar to a physio/focus more on the injury rehab side of things? Its my first time going to a podiatrist so I'm not sure what's normal for this. Are they usually just focused on orthotics? Thanks!
