Arts & Recreation Nocturne? When is it?

• Upvotes

Was in the city today and saw that Nocturne is this weekend. I remember it being really cool the first couple of years and then it sucked. Thought I might check it out but... When is "the big night? The website is confusing as fuck. It's over 3 or 4 days now? Any help or suggestions for installations to see would be appreciated.

Driving & Transit Dashcam footage request?

• Upvotes

By any chance did anyone see the dump truck effectively run me off the road on the 118 outbound right by the 107 extension off ramp?

I'm okay and somehow there's no damage, I'm honestly just wondering if it was as dramatic looking as it felt.

For what it's worth the dump truck got close enough to fold my driver's side mirror in before I reacted and went off on the gravel shoulder. I expected to find a bunch of scraped paint down the driver's side of my car but I got extremely lucky.

Food & Dining Weekly Restaurant Closure Updates

Weekly update on restaurant closures.

✅Looks like A2Z fixed everything and reopened after October 8, 2026.
🛑It appears that both Ragazzi and Happy Garden are still closed. I think this could be one of the longest closures we have seen (or noticed lol). I couldn't find any new inspections for both those places (they both have a long list of things that they need to fix).

📣Fun fact for the week - 26/28 places that were shutdown by the Health Department is in HRM. That's almost 93%.

❗️❕ It appears that Pourdad Coffee is still on the list. Hopefully they fix it soon, if it's a genuine glitch

Schools & Education Potential CUPE Job Actions [HRCE Email]

Text below, will format better in a minute, bold emphasis mine:

Families,

For the past several months, Regional Centres for Education across the province and the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP) have been negotiating with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents a number of school support staff, in an effort to reach renewed collective agreements.

We know that the possibility of any disruption to your child’s learning environment can be stressful, and we want to keep families informed as this process unfolds.

Unfortunately, the conciliator working with the parties has filed a report with the Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration declaring an impasse. This means negotiations are currently at a standstill, and the process that could ultimately lead to job action begins.

Our priority is to reach fair agreements at the bargaining table and avoid any disruption to students and families. At the same time, we have a responsibility to be prepared for the possibility of job action.

Recent CUPE labour action in the long-term care sector demonstrated that we cannot assume services will continue while negotiations remain unresolved. While the circumstances and bargaining processes are different, that experience reinforces the importance of preparing now for the possibility of job action in our schools.

We are developing contingency plans and assessing what different forms of job action could mean for students, families, and school operations.

We will provide families with further information as soon as it becomes available and will provide as much notice as possible should there be any change that affects students or school operations.

In the meantime, here’s what you need to know:

While we remain optimistic, unless a deal can be reached, CUPE has signaled an intent to commence strike action on Monday, October 26. The employee groups that CUPE represents vary throughout the province, meaning the impacts of a strike will be different in each Region and for CSAP.

In HRCE, CUPE members include all term and permanent employees within the following classifications:

Educational Program Assistant (EPA)

Lead Early Childhood Educator

Support Early Childhood Educator

Library Support Specialist

SchoolsPlus Community Outreach Worker

Child and Youth Care Practitioner

Mi’kmaw/Indigenous Student Support Worker

African Nova Scotian Student Support Worker

Assistive Technology Support Worker

Substitutes for abovementioned classifications, where applicable

For clarity, any potential job action does NOT include teachers. CUPE also does not represent EXCEL employees.

The EXCEL program will continue to operate in the event of a CUPE work stoppage.

What happens now?

I recognize that this is unsettling news. I want to assure you that teams at HRCE have been working closely with school Principals in recent weeks to determine how to best support students in the event of any labour disruption.

We are making plans to ensure that students who require the support of EPAs will continue to be able to access educational services reasonably and safely. Principals will begin reaching out to families who will be impacted to discuss these plans.

In the event of a work stoppage, Pre-Primary Programs will be paused.

We remain hopeful that there will soon be a resolution and that these plans won’t be necessary. CUPE has not yet provided the 48-hours' notice as required by the Trade Union Act.

As a reminder, we do not expect any potential strike action by CUPE until Monday, October 26.

We value and respect our employees who are part of CUPE. We know their work is critically important to children, students, families, teachers and staff, and hope to reach a fair deal before any action that affects our classrooms.

I will provide an update on the ongoing talks and contingency planning as new information becomes available.

Shops & Services Is Spirit Halloween wheelchair accessible?

The store is usually in a location I can scope out beforehand, but I don't go downtown unless I have a specific goal. This time it's Halloween! 🎃 But the address says suite 200 and I seem to remember the old Goodlife location was indeed on the second floor. So as the title asks, can I get up there?

I'm due for a mammogram and I called they have said there are no appointments for rest of this year 2026, all of 2027 and they are now booking out to 2028. Imagine how many breast cancers metastasize in that time which is the difference between a treatable cancer and a death sentence.

Welcome to the r/halifax Pet Photo Jamboree!

This monthly thread will be a place to showcase photos of your pets/animal friends for all of r/halifax to see and admire!

Is this a contest? Yes! But there's no voting, everybody wins and the only prize is knowing we all saw how cute your pet is!

Does this mean I can't post pet pics in Friday Positivity anymore? Absolutely not, we still want them there too! We just wanted a dedicated place for people to post their pets for all to enjoy.

Is it just for pets? No, if you have great wildlife photos, we want to see those too!

Show us your animals, people! 🐶😺🦜🐟🐍🐄🦂👽

Arts & Recreation Mosaic for Mental Health art gallery returns for 28th year in Dartmouth, N.S.

Kindness and creativity will be on display at the Craig Gallery in Dartmouth, N.S., on Thursday as part of the 28th annual Mosaic for Mental Health event.

“This is a signature fundraiser for the Canadian Mental Health Association Halifax-Dartmouth branch, and all of the funds that we procure from this show go to our social programs with adults with mental illness,” says Garry Wilson, a community mental health volunteer.

“We started off a number of years ago with a very small number of pieces, I think it was something like 39 pieces. We’ve evolved today to over 1,200 pieces of art.” [...]

He says they are hoping for a large crowd when the gallery opens on Thursday at 6 p.m.

“It runs until the 27th of October. The tiles go on sale on Friday evening. All of the artwork is purchased online. Tomorrow evening is our preview night, and people can come in, have a look and see what they might like to purchase,” says Wilson.

Discussion What's the deal with the cost of living?

My brother's apartment in HIGHFIELD is going up to $1500+ [I'm not sure of the exact cost but it's at the $1500 mark.] I say this as respectfully as I can, but how the f*ck can you charge more than $850 for a one-bedroom apartment in HIGHFIELD? No hate to the location, but the buildings? I mean, come the F*ck on. WHAT IS HAPPENING? WHY is nothing being done about the cost of living? Why are people not enraged?! I'm living home because I genuinely cannot afford to move out, and I work a full-time job with semi-decent wages. And don't spout to me some bull that it's ''inflation'' and the economy because that's a load of sh*t. It's greedy people and I'm so tired of it. Aren't you tired of it? Why hasn't this changed? How are they ALLOWED to charge so much for rent? Someone explain this to me, with logic, because I genuinely don't think there is ANY EXCUSE, the cost of everything continues to increase, but wages? GOD FORBID YOU PAY SOMEONE A LIVEABLE WAGE IN 2026. WHAT IS THAT? Why, we're told go-to school, get a good job, and you'll make enough money to buy a house NONSENSE our whole bloody lives, and now EVERY PERSON I KNOW IS STRUGGLING, and people I don't know are struggling, people I talk to at the gas-stations, groceries stores, in passing. EVERY SINGLE PERSON IS STRUGGLING AND IT IS NOT OKAY AND WHY IS NOTHING BEING DONE ABOUT IT?! PS. Apologies for the Caps, I just don't know how else to relay this, but I know I'm not the only one who feels this way, and enough is enough. Something HAS to change.
