I've got 2 different types of babies here.
I've got 2 3.5 month olds. One was picked up locally and the other was shipped. The one who was local was exploring his tub since I got him, 2 days later, I put him into his adult enclosure And he was exploring it that night and hanging from the ceiling.
My OTHER boy, I had for a week now and he hasn't visibly left his cork tube. I put him in a 17qt tub since his arrival weight was 23g and gave him a smaller cork tube thats the length of the bin... Over a foot. I've seen him explore once due to poop on a stick but that's really it... So little action from him that I had to lift the log up to make sure he was alive.
This brings me to my question: should I set up this 12x12x18 that I have and evict him from his tube to the larger diameter cork log and 12x12x18? I plan to fill the enclosure more but am just in the planning stage. I also have an 8x8x12but I know it's hard to regulate.
My reasoning is to better monitor health, poop, eating, activity..... The fact that I wouldn't know if something happened besides smell concerns me and this allows me to better monitor him in time.
Pics of his tub, the start build of the 8x8, and the other leachie and his adult enclosure

My friend is giving me a gecko because he's unable to care for it. I'm only renting a room, and I don't have any living room space, so the gecko will have to be kept in my room.
I work five days a week, and usually, since I live alone, I turn off all the lights and the fan when I leave because I'm afraid that if I leave them on, something could happen with the wiring, such as an electrical fire.
So, if I have a gecko, do I have to leave my fan on throughout the entire day? Once in a while, I turn on my AC, but not all the time because my room is naturally cool.
Would I require a heating lamp? Maybe not for the entire enclosure, but just in a certain area? Would the gecko require light 24/7? Do i need to buy a light for the enclosure?
Also, because I only rent a room, I keep my windows closed because I don't want cockroaches, mosquitoes, or anything else coming into my room.
Would I need plants in the enclosure? Should I use fake plants or real plants? What type of soil should I use, and what should I put at the bottom of the tank?
Please give me advice on how to set up a proper enclosure for one gecko. How big should the tank be?
I live in Malaysia, where the weather is usually pretty hot. Fortunately, the area I live in has been experiencing daily rain, so the weather has been cooler, and my room doesn't get extremely hot.

hi everyone!!! i’m looking to identify the above pictured cutie. a few months ago i caught them (at least i think) by my front door and put him down into my garden but over the past two months ive been seeing him almost daily inside my house, specifically, my kitchen. i live in a coastal part of texas but not right on the beach if that helps to identify.
i just want to know if im at any risk of any diseases the little guy might be carrying or if i should be worried about a possible infestation i haven’t yet noticed. the tail also concerns me and in all honestly ive taken a liking to them and would want to learn how to best cohabit and help them heal even if i can never “domesticate” them.
thank you in advance for the help <3

Hi people! First things first, let me know if I'm in the wrong sub 😅
Anyway, I'm looking for some advice on beginner lizard keeping!
I'm an aquarist, and recently a friend of mine has been joining me on trips to aqua/tera expos. She's been showing quite a bit of interest in lizards, especially geckos, and at one point she almost got one herself. I was honestly a little surprised, but also really happy that she's enjoying the expos with me!
I have a feeling she might just need a little encouragement and some more confidence before taking the plunge.
So, here's what I'm thinking. The next time I'm over at her place, I'll have a look at what kind of space we could potentially use for an enclosure. I'll also talk to some of her closest family members and see what they think.
Of course, as an aquarist, I'd never just buy someone a pet without knowing they actually want one! My idea is to make her a little lizard first, as a sort of teaser. I'll either crochet one or try needle felting, depending on what I feel like doing. Hopefully it'll turn out cute 😂
Then, when I give it to her, I'll explain that we've been looking into what keeping a real lizard would involve and that we'd be happy to help her get started, **but only if she's sure she wants one and feels ready for the commitment.**
And that's where you guys come in!
I know next to nothing about keeping lizards. With fish, I know what kind of setup and equipment is needed, but I'm completely clueless when it comes to reptiles.
What species would you recommend for a beginner, especially someone interested in geckos? What kind of enclosure and equipment would they need? Heating, lighting, humidity, hides, etc.? How much space do they need, how long do they live, and what kind of costs and daily care should we expect?
Basically, I'd love to hear anything you think a first-time lizard keeper should know before getting one!
Thanks in advance for any advice, I really appreciate it! 💜 And again, if this isn't the right sub, feel free to point me in the right direction!

My first leopard gecko (Stevie) passed away and I'm finally deciding to get a new one but now I'm stuck deciding if I want another leopard gecko or a crested gecko. I've seen and heard, getting a reptile from a breeder is better than a pet store. (My first gecko was from Petco). There wasn't anything wrong with him when I got him from Petco, but I want whatever is best. I live in NYC and I looked up when the next expo is and it isn't till November and I was hoping to get one before then but this is new for me. Are you only able to get reptiles from breeders at expos? Or is there another way to meet breeders aside from that. Also any advice on if I should get another leo or a crested gecko would help. I still have the tank I bought for my lizard but I did see that crested geckos need a different tank. Plz help 🥹

someone found this little dude at my job and i decided to take him home. I did a bunch of research so i am aware of the debate of invasive/non-native on medis so i figured might as well welcome him into my tropical plant collection corner of my room. Mike is extremely small and i am extremely broke so i got some starter gear and a little enclosure to keep him happy until i can give him more room and we can get comfortable with each other! any tips on care? i put two flightless flys seasoned with calcium for him to snack on tn for the first night and he’s climbing around in there right now.

he shed again and it was still plugged so decided to try the tweezers and success! i got the whole plug out. it was solid, idk how many sheds had built up (hes 3 years old i just got him a few weeks ago).
even kept his tail through the whole ordeal and all his skin 😂🤷♀️ can't say the same for me though, he got 2 good bites in before i grabbed the glove.
i think he appreciated it once i started because he held still and didnt try to bite or wiggle while i went at his ear with the tweezers, must have felt nice to get it out finally!!

What are those spots on his nose and eye? Dry shed or injury?

Just like the title says. There’s a lady on Fb who is selling unsexed hatchling electric blue day geckos for $70 each. Is that a good deal?

My little 4 month old boy enjoying his adult enclosure
r/geckos • u/wurmpled • 2d ago
i've seen some mixed opinions on if they do better with heat lamps, vs just keeping the enclosure around room-temp overall (so low-mid 70s); maybe a little hotter when factoring in the uvb and/or a plant grow light. what do you guys use / recommend?
r/geckos • u/wurmpled • 2d ago
pretty much all roach species are illegal where i live, and i don't really want to deal with breeding crickets.
i know males often lose interest in insects, and i do plan to get a male, but what other options for feeders do i have? regularly going to the store to get feeders isnt super feasible for me, and neither is having them delivered super often... so what's my next best options, if anything?

Slimey has been with me since Friday and was exploring his tub that night.
It's so interesting to see the potential difference between a shipped gecko and a local gecko.
Oscar has been with me since Wednesday but is still pretty shy.
I built an 18x18x24 enclosure but was nervous about putting my 4 month old(both of them are 4 months old) in there. He is LOVING the mansion.

Found this little gal on a big shipping crate at work. No idea how far she's traveled, but she seems healthy. Looking for a home, too. (She's currently in a paper cup until I get home from work)
