So, I'm currently a first-year International Affairs major at Tech. I know it's probably criminal to say this as a Tech student, but I originally really wanted to go to u(sic)ga as a history major because their program seemed right up my alley. I have loved history since I was a kid, and knowing that Tech didn't really have a true history major, I didn't even want to apply here. But as it goes, my mom made me apply "just to see", and lo and behold, I got accepted to Tech and waitlisted at u(sic)ga. (Yes, I know I'm an anomaly for having that scenario, people tell me that every day.) So I started here this past summer in the Ignite program. This fall semester, I've been taking some of the intro-level international affairs classes (specifically Intro to International Relations and Science, Tech, and International Affairs), and I honestly really don't like them one bit. The historical aspects of them are super fascinating to me, but when it comes to the modern application of international relations studies and theoretical lenses, I'm both lost and bored half to death. Not to mention the Elementary Japanese class I'm taking to satisfy the major's language requirement is just beating me into the ground.
Now before you all come for me, I do know that we technically have a History, Technology, and Society major. But honestly, that major just felt way too broad to me and very science-heavy based on what I saw. The course offerings and different specialization options just didn't really appeal to me. But I also could totally just be reading into it wrong because all I have to go off of is course offerings and descriptions, which are usually pretty vague.
To complicate things further, I really don't dislike Tech as a whole. I have a great group of friends, I'm in the marching band and I love practicing and performing, and the campus itself doesn't feel bad or wrong to me in any way. I love all the traditions and am having an amazing time just being here. I just really am not having a pleasant time with my major right now, and I keep coming back to this feeling that Tech just doesn't have anything for me.
I don't want to uproot myself since I do like it here, Tech is obviously a great school, and I also know transferring can be really disorienting, but I also don't want to get a degree in something that isn't really at all interesting to me. Should I just stick it out and see if maybe INTA gets better past the intro-level classes? Do I consider switching to HTS just to see if it's better than it looks? I just feel really stuck and kinda burnt out right now and would appreciate any advice. Thanks!
