Finally upgrading

Post image

I built my PC back in college with an FX-8350 and 8gb of RAM. Over the summer my Uncle got a new job and the old one didn't ask for his computer back. He works remote doing lightning design. He gave me the PC which had a Ryzen 7 5800x, 32gb of RAM and some weird little GPU. I put my GTX 980 in it and it's been nice but I figured it deserved something a bit better.

I wish EVGA still made cards

I remember when a dime sack cost a dime

Sigh

That's not an upgrade, that's a whole méga jump. Enjoy it well my man.

You will most likely notice few fps boosts. Just a wee bit. Not much. 😁

Damn man, this is a huge upgrade, congrats! I just saw another guy who went from a 1080 to a 5090 these are huge leaps forward, and I really wish I had that level of patience.

With price gouging kind of forced to be patient with GPUs. I have never played more than MSRP on any tech in my entire life.

1

u/Bigsparks13 6d ago

That is actually pretty awesome. I honestly feel like that has probably worked out really well too, since you're not breaking the banik every gen or two.

Yeah I had a 1080ti and then a 3080ti about 6 years later. After selling the 1080ti only had to pay about $300 difference to upgraded. Patience is key.

Probably should of upgraded last fall to a 5080 at $999 I could of bought a couple times before the card market went nuts.
Oh well. I can wait it out.

Those are such weird decisions. Why not buy 10 mid-range GPUs instead of saving up for a 5090?

u/xEndcore 6d ago

I did the same last year from 980 to 5080. Its a new world

"when your friend says he has an RTX 5080 but actually has an RX 580"

You have had some nerves of steel to have managed to stay with the 980 for this long.

u/meeroque 6d ago

5080*

Hello TrumpetKingAlex, and thank you for your submission to Gaming PC! If you are new please check out our rules over at the wiki here! We have recently added the useful feature of Title Flair! You can set this manually by clicking Flair under your post once you have submitted your post, but if you missed it in the rules there is a much better way that will automatically flair your post!

To do this simply add what your post is about in brackets before your title. For example for a Build Log you can type [Build Log] before your post so that it looks like this; [Build Log]My new awesome build!, and the bot will automatically set your flair to Build Log! This works for Build Log, Build Showcase, News, Hardware News, Hardware Release, Discussion, and Miscellaneous!

Also remember that this is a place for discussing and sharing our love of Gaming Computers! This is NOT the place for help building or determining what parts you should buy, that is better suited for /r/buildapc. Troubleshooting questions should be directed to /r/techsupport. Thank you again!

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

finally escaped triple digits!

Wow, my GTX980 bit the dust in 2019 and I've had 3 GPUs since. I couldn't imagine still running one in this day and age, that would be miserable!

1

u/Outside_Spinach_2405 6d ago

my god do you have patience

1

u/wiseoldmanrl 6d ago

That's a whole 4100 extra GTX's. It must get hot!

One day I’ll have something better than a 12 year old rig with a 1070

1

u/Acrasialallthetime 6d ago

I didn’t swing for the fences like you but I had a 2070 super and Ryzen 7 3700x that I upgraded to a Ryzen 7 5800x3d and rtx 5070ti. I didn’t want to spend the extra 600 for a 5080 nor did I want to change my motherboard / Ram to am5 platform. It’s made such a huge difference. I’ll definitely be able yo play AAA games no problem for the next 4 years. Next upgrade will be generation 6 and 10. Hopefully things will halve calmed down with the price gouging by then. But other than that, happy gaming!

Your eyes are about to be confused.

Now upgrade your monitor to OLED, it will blow your head back

1

u/Darksider515 5d ago

Big upgrade enjoy it !

1

u/VadimMorkva 5d ago

Remember having a gaming Asus rog laptop with 980m. It was a beast. Congrats on 5080!

1

u/nickisthat 5d ago

Going from an EVGA GTX 980 to an ASUS Prime RTX 5080 is absolutely insane. Bro skipped like 11 years of GPU evolution in one upgrade. Enjoy the generational leap, that’s not an upgrade, that’s a resurrection.

1

u/PearlSugarMuse 5d ago

that ryzen rig from your uncle already gave you a solid base, and the 5080 is a massive leap from the 980. enjoy it.❤️

1

u/Vampire-Main619 4d ago

I jumped from a 1050ti to a 5070ti just last January , it was the best decision of my life. Spent 7 years on 1050to, gonna spend another 10 on this 5070ti.

1

u/LithiumPhosphate 4d ago

Congrats! Id gladly take that 980 off your hands, the ole 970 needs a break XD

1

u/Szymon_Solus64 4d ago

Dont forget about changing CPU

1

u/TrumpetKingAlex 2d ago

I don't think I can get much better than a R7 5800X without upgrading my Motherboard and RAM which is also crazy expensive.

1

u/Ps4gta888 3d ago

why not 5070ti?

1

u/Real-Tip3085 3d ago

bro ur so lucky im literally running a Mac here

1

u/hunterxyt 3d ago

Is is not a simple upgrade anymore bro

1

u/Realistic-Phrase-146 3d ago

I upgraded to 5080 from integrated GPU. The jump is huge.

1

u/Forsaken_Wave4612 3d ago

Congrats man. Huge Massive difference, 4K easy.

1

u/aurelius_180ad 3d ago

nice man! just upgraded (didn't want to, but gpu died from a lightning strike lol) wish you all the best

1

u/MinuteMe2509 2d ago

DAMN BRO IS UPGRADING HUGELY

1

u/Engineer_DAD2026 2d ago

Not trying to hate at all and I hope you enjoy it, but northwestrepair just made a series of videos of him repairing that GPU. He said they used some bad components or something. I think he fixed like 4 of them. It might be worth checking out.

1

u/RecognitionLegal2875 2d ago

How much more fps you got from changing it?

1

u/BeBellFLEX 2d ago

Big jump. Feels good man

1

u/Alone_Fan7491 2d ago

I hope i do get one one day, maybe once they make 10090 xd

1

u/Ou7num3r3d 2d ago

8gb of ram on a machine like this is very depressing

1

u/TrumpetKingAlex 2d ago

I know crazy upgrade right? This is so much better than my old rig.

1

u/Ou7num3r3d 2d ago

To clarify, you put the 5080 in the 8 GB ram computer?

1

u/TrumpetKingAlex 2d ago

No its in the PC I got from my uncle. R7 5800x 32gb of ram

1

u/Ou7num3r3d 2d ago

Monster unit

1

u/Various_wor 2d ago

your uncle just handed you a 5800x pc for free, what a legend

1

u/TrumpetKingAlex 1d ago

Considering I am his free IT guy I did some work for it.

1

u/No_Measurement9174 2d ago

1

u/ForeverCultural1475 1d ago

1
