Which developer has good game after good game?
IMO Ndemic Creations games are all pretty good, plague inc, rebel inc, and After inc are all fun if you like that genre (After inc does diverge from the tech tree style) CDPR, other than the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 (don’t shorten Cyberpunk Hank) I don’t think they have made a bad game especially in recent history, plus GOG is goated (now not owned by CDPR but still, the founder owns it)
Edit: more about them still making good games or haven’t had a recent spell of mediocre to bad like Ubisoft

Remedy, hands down. Yeah, Firebreak was a flop, but even then you gotta respect how they've been trying new things with every release lately; and more often than not they're nailing it.
Plus it's lovely to see a developer that works with AAA budgets and still keeps the oddball, experimental philosophy of the best indies. I would've loved to be in the room where Sam Lake had to sell the Alan Wake 2 musical to the moneymen.

Pyre was kind of a miss for me, but that comes down mostly to my own personal preferences. I still think it’s a well made game.

u/Nictus_Hazeldine_ 17h ago
Hades 1 and 2 are both phenomenal, but I am still absolutely obsessed with Pyre.

Transistor…my beloved…

u/Adjective_Noun_4DIGI 17h ago
I love the visuals and vibes of Transistor, but I couldn't get into the mix of combat styles. Almost felt like programming. Which I get is the intention, but also, I'm very bad at programming.
2
u/Upset_Record_6608 15h ago
Fair.
It really stuck with me because of the OST. It was the first game soundtrack that made me realize this stuff could transcend the medium. In transistor’s case, a good chunk of it sounded like a standalone album that could be played on the radio.

u/DragonRoompa 17h ago
Don’t they make fucking roguelites now? I don’t know if I would agree with this take…

What an odd reply. "This beloved chef made a fucking sandwich? Something that's popular and tons of people like? Ugh, now I can't stand them."

After Resonant I am going back through the Northlight engine games, they are so good man. I forgot how much I enjoyed Quantum Break.
And those assist features are really nice cause I can do a real quick low stress run through Control 1 and AW 2 with one hit kills on and not really worry about anything other than soaking in the story.
I really love Remedy, and I hope sales for Resonant pick up. I need them to have bigger budgets for more weird musical shit.

u/Strange_Compote_4592 17h ago
Only starting from dos 2. There is a reason their old games haven't broken the ice.
2
u/LiewPlays 15h ago
Technically DOS1 got the ball rolling, and even then divinity series started way back then. It all built up to larian now returning to Divinity
2
u/ChuddingtonCheese 17h ago
And lets hope that streak holds true with their new divinity game (i have high hopes)
2
u/Kamakaziturtle 7h ago
In the recent years I guess, though that's kinda only counting 2 or 3 games.
Their games before that were jank. You could still definitely have fun with them, but they were very much 7/10 games if we are being extremely generous. Still they've only gotten better with each game imo, and really hit their stride in recent years.

The obvious answer most people will give is FromSoftware, but my personal answer is Evil Empire.
I've loved everything they've put out from the Dead Cells Castelvania DLC to the Rogue Prince of Persia and the new Castlevania looks to be another banger based on early reviews.

Ryu Ga Gotoku. Not a single dud in their lining. Even their worst games are a 7/10 AT WORST. No matter the shortcomings, they're all at the very least serviceable enough to play through and say "yeah, I had a pretty great time".
Not to mention their absolute gems such as Yakuza 0, Judgement and Yakuza 7 which stand above many games in terms of story and characters.
3
u/teddytwelvetoes 16h ago
Bethesda shoutouts getting downvoted lol despite all of the circlejerking, their two worst mainline video games over the last quarter century or so were 8.0-8.5 tier. we used to love B tier video games instead of pretending that they're Big Rigs tier pieces of shit
3
u/Still_Bit_7527 14h ago
Fromsoft, because they make just 1 game

Fallout 1+2

Baldurs Gate 1+2

Greenheart Games who made 'Game Dev Tycoon' have released their 2nd 'Tavern Keeper' in early access, lot of content missing so far and it's different to game dev tycoon but what content it has is fun and the game is well made.
1
u/Aksds 17h ago
Yes! Game dev tycoon was probably one of the games that got me into programming and game dev. I also like their piracy Easter egg in game dev tycoon
1
u/carlbandit 17h ago
Game Dev Tycoon is probably my favorite tycoon game of that style. I go like some of the others like mad games tycoon 1 / 2, but they just don't feel as cozy as game dev did.
If you enjoy tycoon style games in general and haven't checked out Tavern Keeper yet, it's worth giving it a look. There's a demo up so you can see how it plays before buying.

2 of my favorites is Victoria 3 and Age of Wonders 4 by Paradox. Also I think EUV and HOI4 would probably pay off well to learn but I'm not quite there, I did have a great time trying to learn EUV though but have bounced off unexpectedly, hope I get there again. HOI4 I felt a lot of friction that game was tough to learn and I didnt get far without the learning qol introduced since CK3 (which is not my cup of tea) like nested tooltips.
For how complex and "hardcore" their games are Aow4 has some really groundbreaking casual qoL, like not only did they introduce a mechanic new to the 4x w/ tactical combat genre of allowing you to watch AI do your auto resolve battles, and then manually fighting if you didn't like the results. But you can even turn the AI on mid manual battle. So I can set up my deploy myself, and do as many turns as I want and then let AI take over. Which makes the game a lot more casual/less stressful or tedious to use these features when I feel like it and instead focus more on the other elements.

I’m kinda shocked no one has said valve yet.
Sure you can say they started the modern trend of loot boxes.
But like almost every game they’ve put out has been genre defining. And they’ve all had incredible staying power.
Sure they’re a bit over glazed at times and they’re not perfect. But they solidly stand head and shoulders above everyone else. I feel like rockstar is about the only other developer you could seriously put in the same convo.

Edit: I do agree the visuals where great

Am i allowed to say a studio that currently sucks? Because if that’s allowed the objectively correct answer is old blizzard. Literally every game blizzard released from Diablo 1 until Diablo 3 (which sucked because it was developed by the new era of blizzard-activision) was a certified banger. Best in class, became the standard that other game developers looked to for inspiration. It used to be that you didn’t even have to look at the gameplay, cinematics, or even the game description on the back of the box. If the box art said blizzard you knew it was going to be one of the best games you’ve ever played.
How the mighty have fallen. I don’t think blizzard has released a good game since OG hearthstone. Every title has been mediocre to truly terrible. Even their flagship franchise WoW has gone massively downhill. It truly makes me sad.

As much as people shit on it for extremely dumb reasons -- Bethesda. There weren't games to match Arena, there weren't games to match Fallout 3, there weren't games to match Skyrim, there won't be games to match Starfield
3
u/apistograma 17h ago
I don't think anyone is trying to imitate Starfield and for good reason

There is whole community in no sodium starfield sub
2
u/Cheshur 9h ago
Yeah I know such people exist but I think the very nature that you're recommending a sub that isn't just r/starfield supports my implied point which was that most people did not care for it.

u/Strange_Compote_4592 9h ago
No it doesn't. It exists, just like any no sodium sub, especially because of people like you

Honest question for the gaming community we should begin to ask ourselves- Could there be an easier job than being Todd Howard? Just ship blatantly unfinished shit and slop and these folks will still buy it happily and defend it online, even if it's a dumpster fire like Starfield

u/Nephid 17h ago
Very bold putting Bethesda on that list
1
u/Benjamin_Starscape 17h ago
I like their games. why wouldn't I put them on the list?
0
u/Nephid 17h ago
Fair, I just feel like they have been technical nightmares and shallow experiences for a long time now. Skyrim had flaws but is still a great game, everything after is very meh at best imo
2
u/Strange_Compote_4592 17h ago
Literally every game since Skyrim was deeper both mechanically and writing wise. That comment really shows more about you, than them.
2
u/Nephid 16h ago
Every Bethesda game after Morrowind had an alright at best main story. Their worlds and their lore are why people play their games, which is why Skyrim is still alive and is the most modded game of all time; it had the best world of any of their games. Mechanics don't mean much if they're half baked. The settlement building system is pretty good, but what else? Starfield's ship is a nightmare from a technical standpoint and is a big reason many players stopped playing the game. Needing to explain any of this is wild when every reviewer generally agrees with this sentiment.
0
u/Strange_Compote_4592 16h ago
Addendum ad populum is the favourite fallacy of Bethesda haters, for some reason.
Them agreeing doesn't mean shit, when it is provably wrong 80% of the time and hypercritical bullshit the rest 19%.

u/Aksds 17h ago
I think Bethesda have kinda stumbled recently (historically yes, I agree) with fallout 76 and Starfield
2
u/Benjamin_Starscape 17h ago
76 had a bad launch (at the hands of publishers rushing it) but is a good game and has been worked on since then. it is not 2018. and I consider starfield their best game to date.
-2
u/Strange_Compote_4592 17h ago
Starfield is one of the best games they made.
2
u/Aksds 17h ago
I might need to get back into it, I played at launch and it felt really repetitive (no pun) with world generation, I did like the story though, and space fighting
0
u/Strange_Compote_4592 17h ago
I agree with world generation, but nothing forces you to really engage with it. Most of the planets are empty, but they are for resources and making colonies. It's like saying Kratos' animations are repetitive well, duh, but that's not the point.
The story itself is the most philosophical story ever told in a game. Multiple times.
0
u/Sad_Edge_8350 17h ago
Cave. It's cave, no one else has mastered a genre like they did, every single release after donpachi save for deathsmiles 2 was an absolute masterpiece.
There's also a lot of variety in their work, they're all shoot em ups but they spin and iterate on the genre as far as they can, even bringing in yagawa to make insane games like pink sweets and ibara.
Or Id software, they slipped up with rage and quake 4 but honestly those were fine, aside from those they made doom, doom 2, quake, quake 2, quake 3, doom 3, doom 4, doom eternal and dark ages, all time great after all time great with several innovations that pushed FPS games and the medium as a whole forward
