The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Overview Trailer

Love seeing the iron boots being taken off without going through a pause screen, but they learned that lesson by the 3DS version so I'm not too surprised.

A BOSS REMATCH SYSTEM??? Oh Iâm sold. Twinrova is the best boss in this game and sometimes I just wanna go back and play it, but not play all 9 temples leading up to that point.
97
u/Sitri_eu 13h ago
The sole reason I made new Save-Games was to just simply refight the bosses. Sometimes I challenged myself with silly stuff like "not picking any HP upgrades" or "only fighting with stick". If I remember correctly, stick is double the damage to the kokiri sword and on par with master sword.
Being able to re-fight bosses was also one of the best parts of Majoras Mask (which will be remade next, I hope)

Y'know what the original OOT needed for added challenge? The option to get swarmed by cuckoos through the whole game.

u/Ope_ScootchPastYa 11h ago
I'll be waiting for "OOT REMASTER SPEEDRUN [PR] [100%] [CUCKOOLOCKED]" videos start popping up

u/ActiveChairs 3h ago
I read this as "OOT REMASTER SPEEDRUN [PR] [100%] [CUCKOLDED]" videos.
I've only ever seen it as Cucco or (extremely rarely) as Kokko. For a brief moment, two unlikely parts of the Internet had collided in a way I was unprepared for.

4
u/SvenWollinger 5h ago
Ive noticed this heavily in the switch sports direct. They always narrate everything. They show someone swinging a bat and just have to say "Take the bat and swing it against the ball!" and then when your lucky they say "check it out" and show you again.

Yeah what the fuck? Were the fairies always intended to be furry balls with wings? I always assumed they looked like...humanoid fairies but their tiny bodies were obscured by the bright light they gave off.
→ More replies (13)5
u/AJ_Dali 6h ago
They had normal (cartoon) bodies in WW. Plus the Great Faries were all humanoid, except for the Great Fairy in WW strangely.
Also, here's a link to the ALTTP manual. Page 28 shows a fairy. It could be argued that it's a drawing of a great fairy, but the hair style, clothes, and colors are all different from what's in game.
116
u/Odnetnin90 13h ago
Lol why is Nintendo voice acting always so cringy?
55
u/NaziPunksFkOff 10h ago
They're expecting to appeal to all ages. They speak like elementary school teachers. It's cringey if you're an adult, but it makes sense if you expect a lot of kids to be watching.
4
u/Keaten88 4h ago

That has been a thing in the og tho.
The og already had much more realistic textures and details (for it's time) cimpared to the charackter proportions.
Also this is not photorealism. Hyperrealism means it would be as close to reality as possible, which the remake is evidently far away from.
It's Hyper detailed for sure, but not only is that in line with the og but also has greater implications with the whole puppetry and "a legend being retold" thing.
Either way anyone who uses these arguments never even understood the actual artstyle of the original imo and at worst might even display a bit of disrespect for all the effort devs put into bith the og and the remake.
Not liking the artstyle doesn't need some bs reasining except "I don't like it" or "I don't find it appealing" and I really din't understand why it's so difficult for people just to be hinest about it.
16
u/lattjeful 12h ago
The ârealismâ argument is always exhausting to me. People see detailed textures and materials and go âEw realism.â Pixar movies have lifelike material work but nobody says they look realistic. Something can be stylized without going full Wind Waker. Itâs fine.
34
u/Odysseyan 13h ago

u/kakka_rot 10h ago
Don't people bitch about the graphics every time a new Zelda is released? Since wind waker at least
3
u/dogmeat1003 9h ago

Modern graphics loves to boost the specular of materials and it makes everything weirdly shiny. Not just a zelda problem, it's like this generations "piss filter" or bloom.
14
u/ZazaB00 14h ago
Personally, itâs like Pixar when they started to get insanely good with environments and hair. Iâm left looking at this mashup of damn near photoreal elements mixed in with that classic Pixar style. I didnât like it. It still doesnât sit well with me, but obviously it looks great.
Thatâs the feeling I get with this game. Individually the elements look amazing, but it just doesnât sit well with me.

I think the tunic and kokiri sword are overdone. They could've left out some of those winding pattern details. That and the ridiculous amount of sparks flashing off everything you hit
36
u/Alternative_Ideal218 14h ago
Yeah I think the graphical fidelity is fine I just think some things are over designed.
29
u/stana32 14h ago
Pretty much yeah. Personally I think kid link looks more like a 4 year old than a 10 year old, but it's not that big of a deal. The kokiri tunic is so visually noisy though. If they toned down the woven texture of it and removed most of the leather embossing it'd be great.

I think the clothing looks great, my only gripe is the faces, most faces we saw (including Link) look doll-like and uncanny to me. That complaint is only minor though, and it wonât affect how much I enjoy the game at all.
6
u/Neospartan_117 13h ago
They're actual dolls, curiously enough. That's also why the clothes look a bit overdone, they're actually tiny clothes so the threads look huge.
10
20
u/LoseAnotherMill 14h ago
We hit a plateau of graphics in like 2016 tbh. Everything is trying way too hard to be "realistic" and in the process becomes hyper-realistic to the point of being offputting. Many character designs from yesteryear were a product of the limitations at the time, but now when getting "updated" there's a weird mishmash of the hyperrealism that we're capable of and the desire to stay faithful to the original.Â
It's like going back and playing a game designed to be shown on a CRT, but on your modern LED TV.
24
u/toivoman 13h ago
interesting. to me this doesn't come across as trying too hard to be realistic

u/_Burning_Star_IV_ 11h ago
Halo CE sure wasn't improved by UE5...sucked all the personality and design language out of the game for worse AI, terrible cutscenes, more hand holding, and questionable VA choices. Let me tell you how detailed the crabs and sand look on those beaches in The Silent Cartographer though...
For the record I don't think the OOT remake looks bad, just saying though.
7
u/jntjr2005 14h ago
The only thing I dont like is how hyper detailed Link's tunic is, everything else is great.
11
u/_Burning_Star_IV_ 11h ago
It's a bit uncanny, especially Link and Zelda. There's a weird mixture in this of hyper realism juxtaposed by cartoony proportions and overall design language.
Over the years we have been inundated with AI images of people prompting "Give me OOT but with hyper real graphics" and it looks kinda like this. Even if there's zero AI involved in this game people have been conditioned to hate it because it looks like the AI art we see all the time.
I think that should be pretty easy to understand.

u/Ethosik 14h ago
Cellshaded or anime style lives forever. Base Wind Waker still looks good today. I absolutely love Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. I prefer this art style. I donât like the direction they took for this remake. But can we stop the extremes please? I simply state I prefer one art style and wish this remake had it and all the Nintendo defenders start attacking me. It killed the excitement I had for the game. Initial impression was it LOOKS like another UE game and AI generated âhey make OOT look betterâ prompt. Just the feeling I got seeing it initially.
→ More replies (5)10
u/JefferyTheQuaxly 14h ago
The art style makes more sense if you know the creators mindset going into it, frankly the art style is more authentic to his initial vision for the game than the OG art style is, at the very minimum the ocarina of time remake looks exactly like the creator wanted it to look like, he choose this art design specifically.
5
u/Azerious 13h ago
Did he say this or is this based on concept art? Because I don't think this is quite the same style as that. (I like it). Like ganondorfs head I am sad is wide instead of narrow and pointy.

Right? I donât think they could have done a better job. They preserved the essence of the original but also added a total graphical reimagining.
That aside, not playing the game because you donât like the graphical direction is the complete opposite of what Nintendo is about. Remember when everyone shit on WW and it turned out to be an absolute banger?

Windwaker was the game that basically made me a blind loyalist to the Zelda series.Â
I HATED how windwaker looked, and was so upset they didn't go in the direction of their earlier tech demo. Then one day, I went to Walmart back when they had testers out, played it and was sold on it almost instantly.Â
Now, even if I'm not sure about what they're doing, they get the benefit of the doubt because I was so wrong before. Turns out, Nintendo kinda knows what they're doing.

My big hope is that there's a surprise with how Master Quest works in this, but I feel like the fact that it hasn't been mentioned or teased in anything means it's unlikely to be included. I know that Ura Zelda was fully cancelled but I was kind of hoping with the remake that it would be their chance to fully realize the original concept

Nintendo is also the company that released TotK without ever mentioning the depths, so who knows.
3
u/echoshatter 12h ago

My guess is that unless they planned to do it from the start it isn't likely, and my guess is that the team behind this game have already shifted to Majora's Mask.

Oh yeah, this game redefined Zelda for over a decade. Skyward Sword was the last game released in this style, and that one fell short in a lot of ways. Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Windwaker, and Twilight Princess all share the same DNA and it's really hard to find games that scratch a similar itch.
6
u/Tango8036 7h ago
This game and A Link to the Past before it. It has to be emphasized that Ocarina of Time is almost like a remake of A Link to the Past, but in 3D. Obviously that transition to 3D counts for a lot, I'm not trying to take anything away from OoT. But ALttP basically codified the "Zelda formula" that dominated the franchise until BotW redefined things.

A fairly linear story progression and easy intuitive puzzles that telegraph their intent. This isn't a bad thing, but remember this is a game that a lot of people beat when they were 10, and for many of us, it was the first time we saw any of these controls or mechanics. I'm wondering how many people are going to pick up this game and think it feels dated and lacks innovation without remembering that many of the mechanics that make it feel that way were actually created BY this game in 1997. 30 years of video games owe so many ideas to OoT that it's like bringing back grandpa to show off the same magic tricks you already taught your friends years ago.

I must be one of the few, but I couldn't stand BotW. I played for probably 2 or 3 hours and just found it awful. I absolutely despise the weapon breaking mechanic.
11
u/KiritoJones 12h ago
The weapon durability seems like an issue till you stop worrying about it, because the game is constantly throwing new weapons at you. Some people never get over that hump though.
12
u/Smoke_Stack707 12h ago
I felt that way initially but eventually you realize youâre just collecting piles and piles of âstuffâ. All of it is disposable and what matters is you getting better at interacting with the world.
8
u/Aware_Tree1 12h ago
Honestly, itâs my only gripe with it too and you really just gotta get used to it. Know when you need to fight and when you need to just skip an enemy. The weapons later on have higher durability so they take longer to break. The game was always less about combat and more about exploration, yâknow, âI wonder whatâs over there, whatâs over the next hillâ type of stuff.

u/Surfjohn 12h ago
Very annoying at first, but after a dozen or so hours you realize you have way more weapons than you actually need, and you have a good understanding of how best to use each of them organically. I donât think I ever got caught in a situation where I didnât have enough weapons to proceed through a part of the game. Itâs for sure weird and takes a little getting used to.
