Discussion Voice passes apparently, but I can't hear it unless it's recorded?

• Upvotes

Whenever I talk out loud, to me i just sound androgynous to slightly fem. It's really annoying and I don't know why I sound like that, but when I record my voice it sounds very masculine, and others have said i sound like a cis teen boy. I'm not doing anything different to my voice when i record it, so I'm not sure how this is happening.

Can my dysphoria really be strong enough to warp my perception of how i sound irl? I mean, mine is really strong, but I don't know if it can do that.

(I took an edible like 30 mins ago, so sorry if this isn't making sense i'm trying my best.)

Advice Needed How can I look more masculine without HRT?

• Upvotes

I'm a transgender teen guy who lives in a state that doesn't allow HRT for minors. I only truly look like a boy when I'm wearing a hoodie (with the little hat thing covering my head). Otherwise I look like a girl...any tips? Thanks :P

Discussion Guys how had bottom surgery how long did it take to have your first surgery?

• Upvotes

I want to have phalloplasty but there's only two surgeons in my state one has an undetermined wait I'm currently on an undetermined amount of time waitlist to have a consult to get on the actual surgery waitlist so not looking promising. And the other is 3+ years, I knew going in it was gonna be a wait but I didn't think that long! So I was curious if this is just the norm. I desperately want this surgery.

Discussion Trans-masc erasure

• Upvotes

Since starting T and finally passing I've noticed how transphobic people actually are. Some of my coworkers have started saying slightly transphobic things to me just because they don't see me as trans anymore, just as a guy. And as much as I appreciate them validating me it still irks me that they think it's okay to be opening transphobic. Does anyone else experience this?

Discussion The Documentary ‘Southern Comfort’ is vital to understanding the danger trans men face under our current healthcare system

• Upvotes

AND I DON’T SEE ANYONE MENTIONING IT. It’s a doc from 2001 covering the last years of a trans man’s life. He lives in rural Georgia and because doctors refuse to remove his overview, it’s unfortunately more of a eulogy than anything. I don’t want to give too much away but if you haven’t heard of the doc, I recommend seeking it out. It’s hard to find media that actually addresses trans men specifically, and as a dude from Georgia it’s a doc I would tell everyone to watch, but I could only watch it once

Celebratory Officially Starting Testosterone!!

• Upvotes

IM FINALLY GOING ON T!!!! I just had my first HRT appointment at planned parenthood and they prescribed me subQ injection testosterone! Yes i’m afraid of needles but the good part is I live with a diabetic sister in law and my mom works in a lab in a hospital so i’m all good.

Going through planned parenthood was so so easy, the only hard part was waiting like three weeks for the appointment since I wanted my mom to come with me and she needed a day off and a day where I didn’t have any classes. Now I have to wait again for my prescription to be ready but i’m SO EXCITED OMG.

I’ve been waiting for the day I turn 18 since middle school so I could officially go on T and the wait was absolutely worth it. I know my ass isn’t gonna shut up about this for a good three months. I also know I will be difficult to shut up once my voice drops. I’m so excited to do those like tiktok testosterone monthly voice checks. I’ve been watching them for so long wishing that was me AND NOW IT’S FINALLY GONNA BE ME.

Question: for those who went through planned parenthood (in america) and have medical insurance, how long did it take for your prescription to be ready? I’ve seen on the website it says 1-2 weeks but i’ve seen people say it’s been ready a couple days after their first appointment.

Discussion nearly 10 years after my gender marker change, the state of Florida claims it’s invalid.

I was born in Florida so I have a Florida birth certificate. Back in about 2017, living in Texas, I changed my gender marker legally as well as my name. No problems. Went to court, paid the fees, no biggie. Now nearly 10 years later, I receive a letter from the state of Florida claiming my marker change is classified as an error because it doesn’t state the “facts of birth”. I’m so upset and confused I don’t even know what to say. Like seriously are there not bigger issues to focus on other than a trans person living their life. I’ve just felt deeply icky about this all day.

Advice Needed I'm not happy after starting T, worried I've made a mistake

I did my first testosterone injection a week ago. I'd ordered my supplies and I was impatient to get it over with, but once I administered the shot, I felt nothing at all. Is this normal???

For context. My situation is complex because I've been socially 'detransitioned' for half a decade now (I ID'd as a trans man for 2 years as a teen). But I realised that I am actually still trans 1 year ago, and I've been seriously thinking about starting hormones for the last 3 months. So I just bit the bullet ig.

And I thought wow, I've wanted this for a while, I'm gonna be so excited to finally be taking steps to medical transition. But I didn't have any sort of positive reaction post-injection, just "huh, it was really that easy". I've read so many accounts of people on here saying that the world seemed brighter, their brain just felt RIGHT, they had so much energy and happiness after the first T shot. So I'm starting to worry that having a boy body just wasn't "meant to be" for me, or I've done something wrong, idk. Why am I not happy?

Been 6 days now and all I've really felt during the week is stress, about the painful lump at my injection site. I think my energy had increased a tiny bit today which worries me because aren't you supposed to be lethargic the day before your shot, not the other way round? It just contributes more to the fear I have that my body just isn't destined to run on T.

No proper effects have happened obviously since it's week 1 but idk, I feel like a fraud because I haven't had that gut feeling of everything falling into place after my first shot. Is it meant to be this anticlimactic? Or does it mean I rushed into this and I'll regret it?

Advice Needed Coming out at work

Hi all! I have been on T for nearly a year (started on a low dose but I have gone up recently to reach a male range). I am currently not out at work but my voice is starting to change more rapidly and my face is as well. I know I will have to come out very soon. I have been able to hide it so far because my job is seasonal (tax accountant) and I get to mostly work from home in the off season but the on season is coming up and I don’t think anyone is going to believe that my frequent voice breaks are a result of a months-long cold.

The good thing is that I work in a small office with only two people (my boss and one coworker who is gay but cis and comes off as center right politically) and I am the only one besides my boss who is capable of preparing taxes. My boss knows my wife is trans and has always been respectful to her but I fear it could be different with me because 1. I don’t pass particularly well, 2. Our job depends on our clients and the existing ones who have only ever known me by my deadname might be weird about me changing names suddenly, and 3. I don’t believe I can prepare taxes for our clients and give them a name that is not my legal name (for moral and legal reasons - I have no idea what the IRS position on this would be but I assume not favorable). I don’t expect clients to use the right pronouns for me but I can’t keep going by my deadname because it is absolutely killing me. I am planning on changing my legal name soon but I have to wait until some other stuff that I have going on right now that requires constant use of the legal name is finished.

My ideal outcome is that my boss is cool with everything, uses my name, and the right pronouns for me. I am going to be an absolute wreck if that doesn’t happen but I doubt I can get another job (I don’t have the ability to come off well in interviews because I am so socially awkward in high pressure situations). I live in the state of New York (not the city) so trans people have more legal protections than many other states but I am wondering if I should secretly audio record the coming out conversation just in case (I have no idea if this is legal in NY, I will have to do some research)

Has anyone ever been in a similar position and if so, how did you navigate it? Any advice from people in similar professions/jobs where the use of the legal name is necessary would be particularly helpful!

Tldr; not out at my job (that has only two other people) but I will have to come out soon and don’t know how to handle it, especially if my employer refuses to acknowledge me in the way I want to be acknowledged

Celebratory Voice drop 1.5 months on T!!

Very exciting!!! I'm seven weeks in on a low dose of gel. I had noticed singing the lowest notes in my register was significantly easier around 3 weeks, and my resonance improved in my speaking voice when I was projecting (talking to someone across the house, cheering ect...) around then too.

This week I have noticed my voice sounds a little deeper in the morning, and significantly deeper at night when I'm super tired. Its does not sound great, its kinda giving pubescent boy voice (shocker) but I'm a lot less embarrassed about the way it sounds or how it almost cracks sometimes than I expected to be. But I don't think anyone has reaaallly noticed, and if they did they don't know why, and thats comforting.

A few weeks ago I asked one of my bandmates if he noticed my singing had improved on the lower end and he said he had, and yesterday I mentioned to my friend that I was vocal training and she said my voice did sound a lot more androgynous

I have not actually been vocal training besides singing exercises and stuff. I just said that bc I haven't actually told anyone I'm on T.

So I got a question though. Since I'm a singer I'm worried about my voice cracking during shows and stuff. Could I stop T for a week before a show to let my voice level out and regain some control for performing? Is that how that works?

Advice Needed last real hurdle to starting HRT is my parents' reactions but i'm considering saying 'fuck it' in dec., advice?

i'm 20 yrs old (21 in a month), moved to chicago at the start of this year in part to be multiple states away from both of my parents so i could present as myself more freely. as it stands, i haven't started HRT yet due to a combination of factors, most of which have been solved by starting at a new job a couple months ago now. i've already done pretty well as far as social transition, 98% of the time gendered as male by both people i know and strangers, with the 2% primarily being after my voice is heard (even with my efforts to speak more masculinely, there's undoubtedly still a femininity to it that isn't really fixable without T). even with the consistency, my dysphoria has been getting pretty severe in general, especially in combination with a big wave of depression i've been fighting with.

the main thing still stopping me from making the jump is my family--both parents are aware of my transness and don't support it at all, and even though i live far from them, both occasionally ask for a check-in selfie (dad) or video call (mom) and i'm scared of the response i'll get once changes become obvious. that said, the current plan i'm looking at is to start some time in december, after a trip i already have planned to visit my mom (and aunt, who is supportive).

i guess my question is, is that a good idea or would it be better to hold off a bit longer?

Advice Needed Pityriasis rosea and tape?

This might be oddly specific, but has anyone had pityriasis rosea (a type of non contagious skin rash that is self limiting and lasts 6-8 weeks, affecting mainly the torso) and if so, how long did you wait to start taping again? I’ve stopped because I’ve been concerned of damaging inflamed skin during removal, and binding instead for now.

Discussion Any fellow cyclists?!

Trans guy living in Portland, OR. I have started doing more races this year, a few endurance gravel races but more cyclocross. Not seriously racing, just for fun. Trying to find other trans guys in Portland or the PNW in general to create an informal “team”. Racing against men for the first time was super intimidating and yeah I just wish that I had more trans camaraderie.

Anyone interested?!

Advice Needed Pre-t questions about balding

So I’ve always had and appreciated a lot of thick but soft curly/wavy hair, and the thought of balding on t kind of freaks me out, especially cause I’m going for more of an androgynous guy look and longer hair contributes to that. My dad is bald, but he got burned pretty bad when he was 19 so we’re not sure how that’s affected him, his side of the family does tend to bald to some extent though. My Mom’s side is the opposite and her dad has a full head of hair to this day. I know there are things to take to potentially stop balding I just wonder whether or not they’ll work?

Advice Needed A cis guy likes my boyfriend , help?

(both17)

My boyfriend is getting crushed on by his friend and playfully flirted with. I restrained myself in saying something like to stop being friends with him because I want him to have autonomy and a choice in his own life. They’re not very close so I don’t know why he’s keeping him around with his shown apparent interest.

BF just said of course he doesn’t feel that way but hasn’t told him that he has a boyfriend or that he’s taken or try to detour him by putting him down plainly and setting boundaries.

I’m not sure that BF directly even told the guy he doesn’t like him and that non-action can be interpreted as playing hard to get signaling interest. Like he was asking him out to prom playfully saying he’d pay and BF said he wasn’t going instead of ‘I don’t like you’ or ‘I have a boyfriend.’ I told him if he impedes on his boundaries and makes him uncomfortable then he should be firm about them. That to do what he’s comfortable with doing.

This is his friend that’s continuously trying to shoot his shot in ways that are even recognizable to the outside as pursuing, as the teacher had even teased the friend and pointed out their apparent ‘closeness’ due to his behaviors of being a lingering stain.

Playfully making sexual jokes like ‘why don’t you help me stand at attention’ or ‘make me do this’ and talk to him all class period, teasing him, which under other circumstances is fine but this guy likes him. I’m autistic so I felt physically sick in hearing this and BF’s other friend told him to not tell me this, they all with the context knew something was wrong.

We’re long distance, 4 hours away from one another and this guy is right there, and cis. I’m on hrt but am not as attractive as I was due to the face bloating+acne i’m suffering through right now. I’m unsure what he looks like exactly but he already has many advantages over me. I asked my boyfriend how tall he was and he said very tall.

Am I overreacting? My boyfriend is trans as well but I can’t help but think he’d prefer a cis guy over me, especially one he sees everyday.

I’m not sure if I give enough to keep him interested in solely me. I know i’ve been a good partner so far but love is often times a novelty. His biggest fear in a relationship is falling out of love which is a big stressor. It makes me need to do more to secure his attraction.I can do everything else unconditionally, but controlling something internal is very difficult.

When people even hint at being attracted to me it disgusts me massively, I immediately walk away to not entertain it at all regardless of who the individual is. He’s my first love, as I was aromantic never having any romantic attraction before I met him.

I told him before I’d be uncomfortable if someone were to crush on him.

Any advice?

Advice Needed People more and more dismissive of feelings since passing

It sucks. It hurts a lot. I am an individual who struggles a lot. I have bpd. It sucks really bad to have my feelings dismissed just because I look like a guy now. Its all I wanted, I feel more comfortable in my skin now being on t for a year and a half. But I hate that other queer people would hate me or dismiss my feelings just because of how I look and sound.

I feel a lack of support from the queer community, but I don't fit in with cishet guys either. It feels so isolating

Discussion Did anyone pick a new name for more reasons than dysphoria?

TW abusive parents.

My new name of course reflects better the gender I live as, but I wanna say I have changed my name to empower myself, and detach myself from my parents. They were abusive and they dont deserve the right to give me my name. On top of that, when i see or hear my birth name, I associate it with my dad screaming it, he is gone now, but the bad memories remain as his legacy. In multiple ways, this name gives me a fresh start. My name reminds me that I am loved and respected by so many people in the life I have built. I am estranged from my family who doesnt accept me, but I dont think they deserve to use the name that I have picked anyway. Peace!

Medical testosterone working the other way around post - hysterectomy

i had a complete hysterectomy over 7 months ago (everything removed, ovaries and everything) and ever since then things have gone the exact opposite of what i expected. my body has been looking much much worse. it feels like the shots are working the other way around.

i've been on testosterone for 2 years. blood levels are fine. e was a bit high before the surgery, now it's fine.

the midsection is so bad, so much bigger, worse then even before starting testosterone even. it feels like the shots are literally doing the opposite of what they're supposed to do. like i'm taking the other hormone

-edit: when i say "midsection" i mean the sides around the waist, not the stomach. "love handles" kind of but not in a "guy who needs to lose weight" way as much as "an old woman in her 60s" way. mostly the sides (and the ass too if i'm honest), even if i touch them from the back they feel bigger. it's the entire midsection so maybe hips too, but worst in the waist, or right above it, not the stomach.

a month and a half or so after the surgery things looked decent enough and i thought there was a bit of fat redistribution (i also hadn't looked at myself in a while) and then after that every shot would keep making my body fluctuate over and over again.

for a while it would start looking really bad (the middle looking bigger, feminine, gross. worse than it ever looked) then it would seem like it's getting more masculine again and it's getting better then it gets really bad again. over and over again. i was mostly on 250 mg/ml every 3 weeks at this point.

the past month and half i've been splitting the shots thinking that would help (i take 0.1 ml every other day) and the same thing is happening but it's even worse than before. it feels like i'm injecting e. i literally do not understand what is happening.

has anybody experienced this before? or has an explanation? and a solution

notes:

-about a month and half after the surgery when things were looking better it felt like things were headed in the right direction, at that point it felt like with a bit of working out things will be even better, now the midsection looks absolutely horrible in a hormone way. i don't know how to explain it but it's not that i need to lose weight or workout or something, it looks gross and looks like a hormonal thing

-blood levels are fine but when i started splitting the shots it made everything so much worse so quickly that i skipped a couple of shots but i'm back to taking it regularly, free testosterone is in the middle of the range. e is fine, not high not too low.

-this was happening for a few months before i skipped any shots obviously

-before the surgery i was on testosterone undecanoate (every 12 weeks) and the last shot caused this crazy water retention problem that felt like weight gain (whole separate problem i can't find a solution or explanation to) so i switched to testosterone enanthate after the surgery. so a shot every 3 weeks. thought it would be temporary and would eventually go back to the long acting one but i was terrified to inject something that would cause problems for that long at that point

-this started happening from the first shot after the surgery. but it kept getting much worse over time and it's much much worse the past couple of months than the first few months after the surgery

-i tried splitting testosterone undecanoate to 1 ml for every 3 weeks. it did the same thing, and it would keep fluctuating before taking the next shot

-now splitting the shot to 0.1 ml to every other day, everything is so much worse and as much as it fluctuates it's consistently so bad and never gets to a point where it feels like it's getting better like it did before (not that it mattered because it got bad again)

-i calculate when i'm supposed to take the shot down to the hour and a couple of times i messed up and took it half an hour early it made things even worse (and the water retention all over my body that feels like weight gain) so i don't even know how i could raise the dose if i needed to. because things also got bad extra quickly when i took 0.11 ml instead of 0.1 ml once

-i never had any of these problems before the surgery, things didn't look this bad (even when i didn't look, through clothes it was a million times better), nothing was ever fluctuating back and forth like this, it never felt like the hormones were working the other way around

-the last 3 week shot that i took before splitting them did this other separate problem where within days after taking the shot i felt like i was exploding and all my clothes got tighter in less than a week. so it's a bizarre version of water retention. and it's been 3 months and hasn't gone away. if anyone had similar experiences or has an idea what to do, please tell me. but i can't risk going back to a full shot because of that, even though splitting them has made things worse.

-i literally have no idea what is happening. whatever the answer or explanation is it's not an obvious thing. so while i need help, just know that it's not like a problem of needing to work out because it's not that, that is a plan but this is not a lack of exercise problem. there's nothing drastically different about anything before or after other than this.

-since i started splitting the shot i tried subcutaneous injections, still absolutely horrible. tried changing injection sites because subcutaneous in the abdomen was extra hellish. other sites are definitely bad. intramuscular is also bad.

-i tried taking a small dose of Anastrozole, it didn't help

-i'm 33. not in great shape but not exactly overweight. i don't know if that's relevant.

-i obviously went to doctors and nobody knows anything to help. nothing that medically alarming is wrong so they don't offer any explanation even.

-please if you say anything medical (especially if it's that i'm screwed) only say it if you actually are a doctor

-anybody have any similar experiences? and an explanation? does anybody have any ideas what i need to do??

sorry if i repeated myself but things are bad and i'm losing my mind

Discussion How to deal with going to a sexuologist

Tomorrow is my second session with the dude and Im stressing so much. I generally hate talking about my transness to people irl and the guy has said some weird things (he's supportive but he's your typical cis ally if you know what I mean). And I'll have to go to him for like 3-5 more times then a psychiatrist then an endocrinologist. I just can't take it and Im already pissed off.

How to be less stressed about this? Also how to stop crying when I talk about anything personal that would also be nice?
