resource [Guide] Finding the ideal height for YOUR floor desk

Hello r/floordesks, we’re Thoughtworthy Co, and we sometimes create content on floor living :)

First of all, thanks to u/Mysterious-End-441 and u/OrgasmicTeasp00n , this sub has been helpful in the last few months as a source of inspiration while we revisited the topic of floor sitting in our recent videos. Also, thanks to u/skinnybirch for sharing our video on here recently. We’re generally terrible at being social on social media, so that reminded us that we should probably be pro-actively sharing our helpful resources.

We’ve received so many questions on “What’s the height of your floor desks?” and “What height should I make my floor desk?”, so we made a video to properly address them. If you prefer reading, we’ve also adapted the video into an article on our newsletter site (you don’t need to be subscribed to read). Here are the links to our guide for finding the ideal height of your floor desk:

📺 Watch the YouTube video: https://youtu.be/OMaBoKy5Zpw

📖 Read the newsletter article: https://newsletter.thoughtworthy.co/p/ideal-floor-desk-height

We plan to create more resources and guides based on what we’ve learned from our floor sitting experience, so if the community has any questions or suggestions, we’re all ears!

Floor sitting inspiration

Hi! I recently made a video and an eBook about floor sitting and a viewer suggested I share a page from the eBook in here - hopefully it can be of help as you explore different ways to sit on the floor at your floor desk! I also have a page with cushion modifications in the eBook

I've updated the bottom middle photo b/c it was a repeat hehe. Thanks to the viewer who let me know!

If you are interested in checking out the corresponding video you can do so here. If you want a link to the whole eBook (it's free), you can get one here. Would love your feedback as it's my first eBook!

discussion Sprained ankle: How do you guys modify your floor sitting/desk setup?

Hey everyone! I’m beginning on my floor-sitting journey and have been liking the change, as floor sitting feels pretty natural to me (as I often would sit criss-cross in my desk chair) but I recently sprained my ankle and it’s kind of thrown me off. It’s healed over the past two weeks, so I can finally walk unassisted, but it’s still tender and I have a bit of a limp.

Last night, I accidentally sat on it out of habit, and it hurt stupid badly. But this just reminded me of how I can’t sit in any of my usual positions and it’s annoying me as I do a lot of desk work from home for my job.

Normally, my go-to positions are criss-cross, lotus (either on floor chair or directly on yoga mat) or seiza (on the yoga mat) but right now, none of those work because of the pressure they put on my foot and ankle.

So I have been sitting in the same poses for hours, which has given me some lower back pain (literally the opposite of what floor sitting is about I think). I’ve been sitting with my knees to my chest and with my legs extended, which are also poses I like, but not to hold for an hour at a time, and they’re not very good for working/focusing.

For anyone here who has dealt with a lower-body injury before, how did you modify things? What alternative floor-sitting poses or adjustments can I use to keep off my injured ankle while still using a low desk? Are there specific ways to prop yourself up or modify positions like long-sitting so you aren’t aggravating a sprain?

Or should I just go back to sitting at a “regular” desk for a while while it heals fully? I just feel l don’t want to keep my ankle completely static, as I know stretching it gently and incorporating some of your usual movements can be helpful for recovery.

I would love any advice, prop recommendations, or personal recovery stories you might have. Thanks so much!

question wobbly standing desk converter?

I was gifted this (https://a.co/d/0eeZC4tq) used one on a buy nothing group and honestly like it so much more than the folding coffee table I was using before, love that I adjust the height so easily. It is not the sturdiest feeling thing though, wobbles easily whenever any weight is applied to the front. Are all of these desk converters the same? are there studier ones? eventually I'd love one of those super low electric standing desk but they are way out of my budget for the foreseeable future.

My (29M) Partner (27M) moved to NYC recently and since space was a major consideration for the overall layout. We took some advice from this community and I can say I am really enjoying the setup. My space is the one with the dragon rug and the adjustable desk. You can really tell our personalities apart from this.

question What to do about windows being too high?

I've been using a floor desk for a while now and while I love the movement I don't love not having a view outside. Where I live windows are typically placed very high, it only works well if you're sitting on a chair or standing. I thought about placing the desk in the middle so I can look at the window from a bigger distance but I have a very tiny room. My window starts at around 1 meter from the floor. I don't have money to renovate in any way. How do other people handle this problem?

My Minimalist Home Office

I’ve been floor sleeping for the majority of the past 15+ years. I’m also a minimalist. This is how I work. Simple, inexpensive, and incredibly comfortable. It is also portable so I can chase or avoid the sunlight as it journeys across my windows throughout the afternoon, the time when I’m the most productive

Should I make a corner of my apartment into a floor sitting space for studying?

I have a big empty corner at my new apartment and I am starting a PhD. I wanted to make an alternate desk space that would allow me to switch over to a new study space instead of being at my desk all day. I am trying to find options that are good quality and affordable, so I was wondering if anyone had ideas on a floor space or what they did.

Converting a Secret Lab chair

I am currently in the process of converting my office space to be ground-oriented. so far the desk has been completely converted and sits somewhere around 40cm at keyboard height.

Besides that I have been trying to figure out what would be good to sit on and my eye fell on my Secret Lab chair. The base of the chair is pretty flat and it is held to the leg(? not sure what this should be in English) by four M8 bolts.

A nearby homesupply store sells furniture wheels with M8 bolts attached by the set.

Did anybody try this before and if so did you like it? Not quite sure whether this would take away from the benefits as you would still sit in an office chair, however since you'd be closer to the floor it might introduce some new possibilities for posture.

Would love to hear other people's thoughts on this! :)

question Lowdesk/ Uppeal Shipping Times

Curious about how long it took any of y’all to get your Legs and Table Top? Online it says 2 weeks but I’m seeing reviews that say otherwise…

There don’t seem to be any other options in this form factor but I also dont have a month to wait :/

Lowdesk pro wobble?

I'm about to order a lowdesk pro frame. As it's quite an expensive thing with those over 300 bucks shipping, I want to make sure it fits my usecase.

I'm currently using an ikea idasen for many many years now, and it almost doesn't wobble at all. Anyone who's got experience with the lowdesk pro, which has only one leg per side - Does it really not wobble? Youtube videos look fine, but I have a hard time to believe them, since most are paid, and most of the one legged tables I tried do indeed wobble.
