Imagine if Digger played out conventionally, where the plot twist was revealed in the end, there was no actor-play subplot. Basically like a regular movie. In the end, it reveals that the story was a play the entire time we were watching it, and it still ended with the audience clapping and everything, and them walking out into the dystopian future they actual live in.
I think for some people, they feel as if Digger was being too deconstructive on its writing, and it didn't really expand on anything that would justify revealing what would be a plot twist, half way into the movie. The curtis actor storyline went nowhere, especially with her daughter, it didn't add anything thematically or emotionally to the movie.
It got too deconstructive with its writing, and it didn't justify for it being structured like that. I'd give it props for trying something different. But it didn't really add anything.
Having the play plot twist revealed so early, really made me not care about anything that was happening through the rest of the movie
If the movie just stayed conventional and simple, have the plot twist at the end, I feel like it would've been better. Some casually movie snobs might hate it, but they hate everything. But I think the general audience would appreciate it more, the way I see it
