After a few months of mild obsession (and more late evenings than I'd like to admit), TranscriTranslator is live on the Elgato Marketplace. It's free and open source.
First, the part that matters most: you need your own OpenAI API key. There's no server of mine in the middle and no subscription. Your PC talks straight to OpenAI and you pay them for what you use. Without an API key, your Stream Deck key won't dictate a thing (naming things is hard). The settings panel walks you through creating one.
The idea is simple: one key becomes a microphone. Tap, talk, tap again, and the text shows up in whatever field you were typing in, in any app.
Each key does one of three jobs:
- Transcribe, cleaned up: punctuation, no "um"s, and saying "new paragraph" gives you an actual paragraph
- Translate: speak one language, paste another (28 targets)
- Rewrite with your own instruction: "formal email", "bullet points", "make me sound less grumpy", anything
The models, and what it actually costs
Two models, one job each:
gpt-transcribe turns the audio into text. Official price: US$0.0045 per minute.
gpt-5.6-luna does the clean-up, translation or rewrite. Official price: US$0.20 per 1M input tokens and US$1.20 per 1M output tokens. It runs with reasoning turned off, because tidying up dictation needs no deep thinking, and OpenAI bills reasoning as output.
I ran the numbers on one minute of speech (about 150 words), using the actual prompt the plugin sends:
| Step |
1 minute of speech |
Transcription (gpt-transcribe) |
US$0.0045 |
Clean-up or translation (gpt-5.6-luna) |
~US$0.0004 |
| Total |
~US$0.005 |
That's half a cent per spoken minute. A full hour of dictation is about 30 cents, almost all of it transcription; the second step is pocket change.
Disclaimer: these numbers are an estimate, worked out from OpenAI's public price list. OpenAI bills you directly, and the real cost depends on how much you talk, the language, the models you pick and the prices in effect on the day. Always check OpenAI's pricing page and the usage dashboard in your account.
A few things I was picky about:
- It only pastes if you're still in the window where you started. If you switched, it copies to the clipboard and tells you, instead of dumping text in the wrong place.
- A dictionary for words the model keeps getting wrong (acronyms, names). It's enforced by exact matching, not by asking the AI nicely.
- A keyboard shortcut can trigger a key that sits on another page of your deck.
- No hidden prompts. A button shows the exact text sent to OpenAI.
- Hold the key for about a second while recording to cancel without spending anything.
- Your API key is stored encrypted on your PC, not in the Stream Deck settings file.
- The panel is in English, Portuguese and Spanish.
It's Windows only (10/11) and needs Stream Deck 7.1 or later. Recording uses ffmpeg, and if you don't have it, the panel installs it with one click (no admin password).
