Discussion Edinburgh drivers v learners

• Upvotes

Guys I’m a learner driver and so many of you non learners throw me OFF with your aggressive beeping when I can’t get my fckn car going after I’ve stalled. Bare with us?? I had a Tesla beep me for legit a whole minute after I panicked at traffic lights and it threw me off SO much. Why do you do it :(

Food and Drink Rainbow Arch / Shanghai Restaurant - what happened to it?

Rainbow Arch was the most deliciously magical Chinese takeaway I've ever had. It disappeared for a while, then one day I googled it and managed to order from what seemed to be a secret Deliveroo page! But never found it again since. Does anyone know what happened to it and if there's anywhere I can get their incredible vegan duck? Nowhere else compares!

Question Driving Instructor Recommendations

I’m looking to start driving lessons in the coming months. I’m in my mid-30s, regret not learning earlier and looking to sort that now after returning to Edinburgh from living away for some time.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for driving instructors in Edinburgh.

Question When/why did Graham Anthony Hairdressers close?

Just wondering the above, was passing by and saw them completely shut down. Does anyone know when, since there’s reviews from just over a month ago. Been around for over 40 years, he even did my mum’s hair, so bit personal for me

Question Favourite places to take your dog?

Moved to Edinburgh a little over a month ago and my dog is finally making the trip over to me! I love taking him everywhere with me so was hoping for recommendations on good places to hang out with a furry friend in the city (or out of it, too?). Pubs/restaurants, outdoor activities, shops, anything!

Discussion Anti-social behaviour - responses from MSP, MP and councillors

Edit: As requested, I've made a template from the email I sent. It captures the substance of my email, but of course feel free to amend it accordingly to your taste and I hope it's useful - template link

I thought this might be useful to share following the spate of incidents posted on here relating to anti-social behaviour.

I witnessed one such incident and have a friend that witnessed another. Both of which were of the same nature to what's commonly posted here and appalling (and quite shaking) to see in person.

So we contacted the MSP, MP and councillors relevant to where we live.

The emails were sent on September 07.

The emails highlighted various recent incidents (including the ones we had seen personally), gave links to online sources (including footage/news articles with footage of some of the incidents), and requested:

  • Their views on the incidents
  • What action they have taken to date to stop ASB
  • What action they are continuing to take (given the problem subsists)

In case it’s of interest, I’m sharing their responses, which can be found using the following links.

(Note that each of their responses have been saved into view-only Google Docs as this was the cleanest and quickest way to share them while removing personal data. I've also only kept their personal data to identify the representative in question and any other officials they refer to (such as the police inspector mentioned) - I've removed all other personal data from their side, such as names and email addresses of their staff who were involved in the replies.)

  1. Lorna Slater (MSP) – no response received (there was an automatic reply confirming receipt of the email, but there has been no further reply. I have also checked my Spam folder.)
  2. Tracy Gilbert (MP) – response link
  3. Finlay McFarlane (Councillor) – response link
  4. Margaret Graham (Councillor) – response link
  5. Joanna Mowat (Councillor) – response link
  6. Claire Miller (Councillor) - response link

I think it’s worthwhile for everyone who sees the violence and broader ASB as an issue to similarly contact their representatives and asks them to explain what they’re doing to resolve this.

Even though they have responded to me, I also don’t intend on leaving that as the matter closed. Ultimately if the ASB continues, then (at least from my perspective of being an Edinburgh resident) it’s only right that I continue to ask them what they’re now going to do. As I don’t want to simply put up with people being assaulted and the lives of local businesses and staff being made hell just because I'm not being directly impacted by it.

I was trying to decipher what it says. The way it is formatted, all caps, no breaks, just a wall of text. Is the intention to make sure nobody is aware of what is going on? 🤯

Surely we can do better than this?

Food and Drink Best affordable authentic Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh?

Hi all

I’m looking for recs for great authentic Chinese food. I don’t mean “British Chinese” I mean as close as possible to genuine dishes people actually eat in China.

Bonus points for affordability. Thanks in advance for your help!

They still common place? Surprised to see at La Belle on Saturday as not seeen in yeeeeears (tho I don't go out a lot).

Offering a spray of Joop, mints, and sage advice such as "if it smells like chicken fillet, put ya dick in it".

These lads self employed? Double up as bog security?

Question Lost tote bag on Lothian Bus 5 this morning (14 October)

Hi everyone! Bit of a long shot, but I stupidly left my tote bag on the bus this morning.
I took the number 5 from Newington Road shortly after 6am and got off at South Bridge at approximately 6:10am.
The bag is a distinctive UK Project on Nuclear Issues tote, containing clothes and personal belongings.
I’ve already submitted a lost property report to Lothian Buses, but thought I’d try here too in case anyone happened to spot it or hand it to the driver.
I would be incredibly grateful for any information!
Thank you so much!

Back in 2003 we saw this painting in a little curio shop off The Royal Mile and we can’t forget it. I’ve done the usual reverse image search and AI searches but — and it’s a long shot — does anyone recognize it?

Rant Feral youths on Princes street.

I was just walking after my 9hr shift to the bus stop, and I had boiled sweets pelted at my face alongside mysterious liquid. They were hiding in a dark shop door near the Sainsbury’s, when will this end :( I got such a fright that the liquid was acid or something. As a young girl this is getting unbearable, can’t even walk peacefully in well lit main streets now!!! I tried to phone 101 but was a 35 min wait. Thank you to the American man who checked if I was okay and called them assholes!

Food and Drink Where are the nice pubs close to Waverley station?

Hi everyone

Pretty much what the title says, I'm meeting a lady friend for the first time. I've been talking to her for a wee while and we're meeting in Edinburgh next Saturday the 24th of October.

We both live outside the city and so do not know which pubs to go to that are nice and near to Waverley.
So any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Question First time getting nail art, any recommendations/advice?

Hi there! My girlfriend and I are looking to get some cute matching Halloween nails. It would be nice to have some kind of small nail art addition to share, but we do not have much money. Maximum spend is probably around £50 total. Is this even possible? I find price lists online to be quite vague. I don’t know what the protocol is for things like this and can get anxious about doing the wrong thing. Any recommendations for friendly lowkey nail spots would be great.

Question Teenage groups - that common?

Hi, I arrived in Edinburgh today with my girlfriend, we ate dinner and then went to ‘Shake it up’ in the south. We were sitting there eating and then 5-7 teenagers were knocking at the window and wanted me to look (which I only did for 2 seconds), they came in afterwards and a girl asked my girlfriend for money, I said no. They were really rude in the shop, touching everything and causing trouble, they then sat next to me and my girlfriend even though there were plenty empty seats somewhere else, we felt very unsafe. I never experienced anything like this in a big city and it leaves us with a bad feeling for the upcoming days. Does this happen here regularly, are there are places we should avoid at all?

Thanks
