Discussion Edinburgh drivers v learners

Guys I’m a learner driver and so many of you non learners throw me OFF with your aggressive beeping when I can’t get my fckn car going after I’ve stalled. Bare with us?? I had a Tesla beep me for legit a whole minute after I panicked at traffic lights and it threw me off SO much. Why do you do it :(

Question What is the thing on top of these buildings?

Post image
125 Upvotes

I've googled and all I've been getting is suggestions for it being some sort of ventilation contraption, but when I look up 'ventilation on top of roof in Scotland' all the options look different!

Is it a skylight guard maybe, or just decorative? It looks like a really tiny balcony which would be ridiculous and it's frying my brain 😅

Discussion Roseburn to Canal Path Art

Has anyone seen the new art on the switchbacks of the path in Dalry? I’m glad they’ve been painted on etc as hopefully it may detract from some graffiti (which I don’t overly mind) and the otherwise bare concrete. But I can’t help think it is AI generated as there are a few mistakes in it. Let me know if you spot them. I see 3. Obviously not AI painted I think a real person did this.

Other Crow attack

Walking to work this morning near port of leith tram stop a crow just flew into the back of my head? Not sure if it was trying to get me away from its nest or anything but I was quite surprised. Has this happened to anyone else around there??

Event techno/house/all electronic music dance parties, older crowd?

(Reposting for mod rules) 32 y/o would love some help choosing a party Friday or Saturday for seasoned dance music lovers from those of you that know the local party scenes. Not being 10 years older than everyone else in the room is a must. Clubs that skew older (mid 20s to infinity) where people are really there for the (electronic) music?

I have some RA saves (links below) to start with but appreciate any suggestions or advice!

- People’s Leisure Club: Saturday high on the list for promise of garage, any idea what the crowd will be like? Thoughts on Friday too?

- Bongo Club: this seems cool on Friday, but I’m a little techno’d out after 3 consecutive weekends of amazing techno parties :D (can be convinced though haha)

- Sneaky Pete’s: Friday seems interesting (never experienced these genres before), and Saturday seems like easy fun (if less interesting), but I’ve heard this place skews young? Would’ve really loved to catch Romare there on Sunday but have an early flight :(

- The Liquid Room: really would love to catch some proper jungle, this party seems pretty experimental though so not sure..

I’ve read some past threads in this sub where older partiers asked for advice on venues and the responses were really kind and helpful, seems like theres a great party community here. Thanks in advance!

Question Anybody knowbwhats up with the HUGE queue on the east side of South Bridge/Nicholson Street?

I was on my way home from work in the bus around 4ish and at first I thought it was folk waiting for buses, then I noticed it was mostly young/university aged girls in a queue. Were they queuing for a shop or something? I usually pass by much later so I don't know if its a regular thing.

Student question Student research call-out: Menopause Design for Fitness Spaces

• Upvotes

Hello r/Edinburgh! I’m a fourth year Interior Design student at the University of Edinburgh and I’m in the research phase of my final year project which focuses on gym/fitness design and menopause.

I’m looking for people to take part in some design research I’m conducting. There is no requirement to be a gym-goer (it would be very useful to hear from people who avoid the gym!), but it is important that you are currently going through perimenopause or menopause. Responses are fully anonymised in case that is a concern for anyone.

If you are interested in taking part please click the link below. The questionnaire takes around 10 minutes to complete.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to hearing your perspectives!

Food and Drink Rainbow Arch / Shanghai Restaurant - what happened to it?

Rainbow Arch (Morrison St) was the most deliciously magical Chinese takeaway I've ever had. It disappeared for a while, then one day I googled it and managed to order from what seemed to be a secret Deliveroo page! But never found it again since. Does anyone know what happened to it and if there's anywhere I can get their incredible vegan duck? Nowhere else compares with their vegetarian deliciousness, although Soul Vegan is pretty close!

Resource Italians in Edinburgh, don't forget to vote for the comites!

Follow up to this post https://www.reddit.com/r/Edinburgh/s/wztJdWU5K7

If you hold italian citizenship and registered to the AIRE you can choose your next comites!

Seems like nobody seems to know about this, and I find it profoundly unfair. So, I decided I am going to spread the voice. I shouldn't miss on this just because I don't have italian friends who can tell me this type of stuff. Nobody should (esp 2nd or 3rd generation people or dual citizens!).

Now, voting on this occasion is not automatic (which maybe explains why so many people don't know about this)

I only found ONE on insta insieme_comites2026 (I am not on fb, so maybe there's more there?)

If you see more stuff please share it. I am not telling you who to vote for or anything like that, that's for you to choose, this post is just to make you aware that there are only few days left to request your ballot.

Discussion Looking for good therapist recommendations that are low-cost/free with availability soon 20 M

Hello,

I’m trying to help my partner find a therapist in the Edinburgh/Midlothian area. He is 20, and has expressed difficulty finding therapists with availability other than those costing £40+.

I would appreciate it if anyone can recommend therapists who have experience with depression, emotionally focused therapy, CBT, and attachment/based therapy.

Because it’s his first time finding therapy he is a little worried about getting a bad provider so I’m hoping the community can help recommend someone trusting.

The gender or modality doesn’t matter, just looking for something with availability within the next month. He is also looking for something preferably free/covered but is open to sliding-scale costs of about 10-15£. Thank you.

Question Edinburgh Airport food and lighter questions

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm flying from Edinburgh to Amsterdam tommorow on a KLM flight and had a two questions about what I can bring through airport security and onto the plane.

I'm planning to cook some fried rice at home and bring it in a tiffin to eat during the flight, finishing it before I land in Amsterdam. Would I be allowed to take homemade fried rice through security and onto the plane? Since I'm planning to finish it on the flight, the tiffin would be empty by the time I arrive.

Also, am I allowed to carry a normal, cheap lighter with me? If so, does it have to go in my hand luggage, or do I need to keep it on my person?

Would appreciate any advice, especially from people who've flown out of Edinburgh Airport recently. Thanks!

Transport Did they change the wee wummen on the train again?

It sounded like a new announcement women on the train to Edinburgh this morning - the now one sounds even more AI and robotic than the old one, but weirdly also way more Glaswegian?

I'm fairly sure the announcement in the train was using the old voice, do they just roll this out piecemeal?

The boring shit you think about while stuck 9n a 20 minute delayed train.

Relocation Thinking of moving from London to Edinburgh next year. Looking for advice (26F)

Hi everyone! :) I’m originally from Italy, and I moved to London over 6 years ago (before Brexit). I’ve built my life here, studied at university, and now work in clinical research. I’ve also obtained settled status and will be applying for British citizenship soon.

Although I’ve loved (and still love) London, I’m starting to feel ready for a change. The cost of living keeps going up and honestly, I haven’t been feeling very happy here lately. Leaving would be a big decision, especially because London has been my home for so long, but I feel like it's time for a new chapter.

I’ve visited Edinburgh a few times and really liked it, so I’m hoping to move there around May/June next year, provided I can find a job in my field.

I have a few questions for people who live in Edinburgh, especially those who have moved there from elsewhere!

  • Rent and housing: how expensive is renting in Edinburgh these days? I’ve heard people say it’s really expensive, but having looked at some listings, it doesn’t seem too bad compared to London. Am I underestimating the costs? I’d ideally like to rent a studio or one-bedroom flat on my own, but I wouldn't mind sharing.
  • Renting with cats: I have two cats, so finding pet-friendly accommodation is important. How difficult is it to find a landlord willing to accept two cats?
  • Living there as a foreigner: are people generally welcoming towards foreigners? London is very multicultural, and while I know Edinburgh attracts lots of international tourists, I’m curious about what it’s like for international residents.
  • Making friends: how easy is it to build a social life in Edinburgh, particularly in your mid 20s? What are the best ways to meet people and make genuine friendships?

I think my biggest worry is feeling lonely. I’d be leaving behind the life I’ve built over the past 6 years, and although I’m excited about the possibility of starting fresh somewhere new, it’s also quite scary. I don’t want to move somewhere I love visiting only to struggle to find my place there.

I’d really appreciate any honest advice or personal experiences. And if you’ve made a similar move from London, I’d especially love to hear how you found the transition. Thank you!

Edit: I’ve visited Edinburgh a few times before and went again solo last week. I didn’t really meet anyone, as people didn’t seem particularly open to socialising, even though I was staying in a hostel. (Although everyone was very friendly on my previous visits). Maybe it was just my experience this time

Question How much money do you

• Upvotes

Living in Edinburgh in a flat with 2 flatmates. Currently paying around 120 a month (so 40 per person) before we've even turned the heating on? Our electricity also seems to be going up the past few days (so it'd be like 150 a month at this rate) and nobody is admitting to putting the heating on or something that'd be driving our bills up.

I'm just wondering what is the normal amount to pay because this seems like loads? It's an electric only flat and we have got a hot water tank that needs to be heated up in the morning and at night. Thank you 😁
