Discussion DECC Executive Director
What is the general public’s thoughts/opinion/or views of the DECC’s executive director Dan Hartman?
Are there any former or current employees here that would care to share feedback?
This post is meant to be an open discussion and welcomes all opinions. A general vibe check.
If you’d like to comment anonymously send me a DM. I will respect your privacy and all DM’s will remain confidential.
Edit: my reason for asking is because it seems like they are consistently hiring. Screenshot of GlassDoor review with a 27% approval rate in comments. Just wondering if it’s a place worth applying.

Local Events Why is there so many dead animals in Duluth?
I drive a lot for work, A LOT, and I’ve never seen so many dead animals on the side, or middle of the road, as Duluth. The Raccoons on Arlington are especially sad as people seem to kill a whole generation at a quick pace.

Question Creepy/haunted places
Are there any places that are public and free that are haunted/creepy? Like a place to just walk around and feel the creepy vibes, not an investigation or anything? TYIA!!

Question Mountain Bike Trail Conditions
Hey mountain bikers. I'll be coming into the Duluth area with my kids this weekend. I've taken them through much of Chamber's Grove and some of Hartley Park in the past, and they've seen a little of the Traverse. When I brought them last year (before I had my own mountain bike), they found Chamber's Grove tricky with so many leaves down on the trails. So, assuming that things are dry enough to ride, do you have any suggestions for where to ride this time of year? Are downed leaves less of an issue right now or in certain areas?

Local News Google drops tax abatement request for proposed Hermantown data center
Google will no longer seek tax breaks for its proposed Hermantown data center, city officials announced Wednesday, following months of community concerns.
Without the abatement, the city estimates the project would generate more than $240 million in regional property taxes over 20 years, including nearly $90 million for Hermantown and more than $120 million for St. Louis County.
Google were originally asking for up to $80 million.

Question Plumbers
Hey all! I have a failing water heater and am looking for recommendations on who to use for replacement. I have dealt with a couple diff. plumbers in the past for other projects and wasn't exactly thrilled with their work and or they were consistently trying to up sell me something... And yes i have tried google and went with the "higher ratings" and these are the experiences I have unfortunately had so far. So I'm seeing if there are any recommendations from here that I could go with. Thanks in advance.

Discussion Anyone else's mail delivery been really bad this month?
So, mainly we've been getting a bunch of political stuff and I haven't really paid much attention to any of it UNTIL the 1st... when I was supposed to get a letter from the IRS according to informed delivery (first class from Ogden, UT). Lo and behold that was the only piece that we didn't receive at first, that I noticed, but then within the past week or so there were other pieces not showing up but we were still getting mail. I checked the history on informed delivery and none of the stuff we were currently getting had pictures on there. So either we were getting older stuff (cause the history only goes back a week), or things that didn't get pictured.
Since my IRS letter still hasn't shown up, I submitted a missing mail inquiry on Thursday night... which I have doubt that I'll ever get a response to cause the last time I did that I never got any response.
And now it seems like I jinxed the mail even further (probably just a coincidence) cause since I submitted the inquiry we've gotten ZERO mail. We were supposed to get 2 pieces on both Friday and Saturday but there was nothing. And today 9 pieces, nothing... and I assumed a package would arrive today too since it scanned at the St. Paul PO on the 9th. It kept showing scans that it departed/arrived/departed on the 10th but never actually got to Duluth, except once and then 9 minutes later it was somehow back in St. Paul... so I'm guessing it's either stuck somewhere or something's not going right.

Question Toddler winter essentials
My baby is a bit over a year old now and has grown out of all of her baby clothes + fleece suits from last winter. As it’s cooling down, I’m starting to scramble about what clothes she needs! It’s also a new need that the clothes are things she can walk in!
We go outside and walk her in her carrier daily, as well as run her in a stroller (she has a cocoon thing for that). During the winter we plan to get out and ski again with her.
Any recommendations for affordable boots, jackets, baby suits, layers, etc. We live north of Duluth, but come down on occasion so don’t have a lot of shopping opportunities in town proper.
And how do you dress your toddler on cold days when you still go out and play?
Thanks in advance!!

Discussion Hooligans at the Heritage Center (and their kids)
I can't skate. But last weekend I went to the Heritage Center with my sister from San Francisco. She loves to skate. They rented me a helmet and skates for $5. I hobbled around holding the boards for a while, then used a little blue plastic bench-thing to practice getting out on the ice more.
After a little break, I could not find one of the blue things. They had all been gathered up by young boys who were pushing bunches of them into each other like bumper cars. I understand. That looks like fun. And these are kids. They don't think about other people when they're having fun. Surely their dads will come along soon and remind them to be considerate of others. After all, why should I have to skate out to the middle of the ice, falling every couple of steps, and ask them to please let me use one?
Then the dads came along ... Never mind. It was now clear what the problem was. I hate that these kids can only look forward to a future of trying to outrun the cops in a pick-up truck. By the end of skating time, these dads had hockey sticks out and were firing a puck up and down the ice! The rest of us tried to dodge it to keep ourselves healthy. Soon my sister and I, and a few others who were trying to skate, just had to abandon the ice and go home.
I will never go there again of course, so it's not really any of my business. But somebody needs to ban these losers. It is not a public skate at all, if nobody polices the rules. I was embarrassed for my city and felt sorry for mild-mannered skaters who were scared off of their own rink,

Discussion Large vehicles
As a commercial driver I have to complain.
Please PLEASE, give big vehicles spaces, whether in front or behind. I have been cut off too many times by impatient people and if for whatever reason you have to stop, I can't and you'll probably get crushed. Same goes for when we turn, we have to take wide turns.
So please be mindful of your spacing with larger vehicles, buses, semis, big work trucks.

Discussion I need friends
My partner has never been enough friend wise, And I know thats kinda shitty to say, but ever since I moved from my hometown to be with him, my life has dramatically gotten very boring, very unlivable in my opinion. It doesn't help that the very few friends that i kept are pretty far away and dont see me worth the drive. Im a 23 year old girl. I cant drive, but I really want to. I stay home now...all day..watching my kiddo, but I want a break, i want someone to take me out and have some fun (tattoos, trails, parks, stores, crafts) and someone to actually share my hobbies with that seem like they care. I like bugs, spraypainting, ghost adventuring, anime, trees, WATER, fish, plants, I used to be into music and drawing, but not anymore...if I had someone to inspire my creativity I feel like I could be a lot happier...dms are open! I need more outta my life than sitting between 4 walls with the same person everyday. I live in superior/duluth and I know there isn't much to do around here, but my mind is open.

Question Short internet video of woman saying "Duluth, Minnesota"
Silly lil ask but can anyone help me find a social media video? I came across it maybe a year or two ago but have since deleted all my social media (except Reddit, heh).
It's a simple, short vertical video of a street-crossing view of the lake with an older woman's voice saying, "Duluth, Minnesota." It's an earworm and somewhat of a stim whenever I walk around the neighborhood, and would love to find it again to replay for my housemates. Thank you!!! :)

Discussion What do you think are the three most effective things I can do from here until January to effect positive change in our community?
Just what it says. Someone asked me this after a Sunday church service because they were struck by my saying, "Don't tell me what you believe. Show me what you believe." So I said that these three things were critical for our community AND part of our faith.
- Support and supply Winter Emergency sheltering and basic needs - CHUM is who I've worked with in the past, but we've also supported the Damiano Center, Union Gospel Mission, etc.
- Participate in after-school mentorship; I've watched a Hermantown Senior (now a UMD sophomore) create an amazing program that helps underrepresented students find a path to college. If she can help as a high schooler, we all can help in some way. And now that we're moving into the winter and holiday seasons, local students need stability and support. You can sign up with the Duluth Community School Collaborative, although there are other portals.
- Finally, find ways to direct your holiday resources locally — my experience is that when you send support farther away, there's a higher chance it won't be used as hoped, or that delays keep it from being used at all. Samaritan's Purse is a national program I wouldn't support for these reasons alone. Like food and care, using your resources locally is a way to ensure they have the greatest impact. Buy locally for gifts, shop for thrifted and reused goods close to your home, and support local food banks, clothing banks, and gift programs.
I am willing to share why I think these three things are impactful. I would also add "VOTE" to my expression of positive things for the next three months, but voting isn't enough. We have to follow through with local actions.
What would you say are the three most positive things that someone could do from here to January, and what would you add?

Question ISO Custom Woodworker
I am planning on fixing a piece of furiture very dear to my partner's heart as a christmas present this year but I am not entirely sure where to start. I looked up custom woodworkers in the area and they seem to specialize in extremely expensive original custom furniture rather than repair work. To give you an idea this is a simple 3 legged breakfast table that had one leg broken in a move. We fixed it temporarily with a construction wood screw and wood glue but it broke again when we left a potted plant on it for a couple months.
I would love to get this small table fixed and I am willing to have anyone do it who thinks they have the skills. I can send anyone pictures if they DM me. Other than that I would appreciate anyone sharing some leads they have on people who would be willing to do the work. I am ready to pay.
