Was waiting for the 6:40 train after a genuinely garbage day at work, staring at my cracked phone screen on a green wooden bench that smelled like wet mulch. An older dude wearing a windbreaker with a stained zipper sat down next to me, dropped a heavy canvas tote bag, and just started talking about pigeons like they owed him money.
I didn't have my headphones in, so I just nodded along. He ended up telling me about how he spent forty years repairing industrial sewing machines, and then out of nowhere he looked at my takeout container of cold pad thai and said, "You're carrying all that heavy stuff in your head like it's valuable furniture, but nobody's even asking to rent the room."
We sat in silence for the last ten minutes watching a stray dog chase a leaf. When my train pulled up, he just raised his coffee cup in a little toast and told me joy is mostly just paying attention to things that aren't currently breaking.
Idk, it wasn't some grand movie moment or anything, but I walked home without checking my email once.
