Politics Was Pterry a progressive or conservative?

Obviously progressive, obviously. But!

In (I think) Carpe Jugulum, Granny says something along the lines of “Evil is treating people as things.” Which is a pretty big umbrella statement, which is mostly but not always true.

On a similar note, I’ve heard an umbrella statement of “Conservatives believe people are fundamentally bad, progressive believe people are fundamentally good” and that lines up with what I’ve seen in political rhetoric and policies from various parties.

Pratchett’s authorial voice tends to portray people as being fundamentally bad. Characters like Carrot who believe the opposite are present! But the authorial voice puts this down to his personal charisma more than anything else.

It also makes sense that despite the “woke” nature of Pratchett’s philosophy, I’ve seen conservatives enjoying his books.

So is this the case where that umbrella statement doesn’t fit? Or was Pterry someone who had progressive values but a conservative outlook?

Book/Series: Witches Granny Weatherwax - what does she have in her home? (advice requested for art piece)

Hi everyone! My father is a huge Discworld fan, and asked if I could draw a Discworld stamp for him for his birthday (to keep all the Discworld emporium ones he has company).

As Granny Weatherwax is his favourite character, I thought I'd start with a her. I was thinking of drawing her with a teacup, and a shelf with an assortment of items behind her.

Particularly, I was envisioning the jug in the shape of a humorous cow and a jar of honey with a buzzing bee, but am getting stumped on what else to add on the shelves. If anyone has any ideas, I would truly love to hear them! I mean to draw him stamps of the other witches as well (and then other groups of characters in future)

The roughest thumbnail sketch of the sort of thing I'm envisioning below.

Edit: This is the best community, thank you so much for your help! I'll widen the background to add more of the ideas in the thread. I am extremely grateful, and will post an updated drawing when it's all done.

Day 14. Lady

'Excuse me, are you the lady who is with the clowns?'

Corporal Nobbs, who had been trudging along gloomily, looked up. He was being addressed by a pleasant-faced young woman. A woman actually talking to him by choice was a novelty.

Smiling while doing so was unheard of.

'Er yeah. Right. That's me.' He swallowed...'Beti.'

Reading Order/Timeline Let's create a(nother) definitive ranking of the Discworld books!

I always love hearing about everyone's favorite (and least favorite!) Discworld books so I thought it might be fun to rank them all. Put the title of your favorite book, and maybe a reason why it's your favorite, and everyone can upvote if they agree. Most upvoted comment wins; and then we start again tomorrow with all the books except that one to determine the second best book, etc.

Let's include the 41 main books only, no Science books or short stories. Unless you think we should include them, then I guess we will.

Roundworld Reference Vimes boot theory and Formula 1 racing?

I'm listening to yesterday's The Race podcast from The Athletic, which is about Formula 1. They're trying to find ways to make things fairer for smaller teams, and one of these presenters brings up Vimes theory of boots, which he doesn't exactly apply correctly, but it's still a pleasant surprise to hear how widely that has spread.

Reading Order/Timeline Everyone asks what's the best book to start with. What's the WORST?

I was introducing a friend to the series, telling her there's no wrong book to start with. She asked what my favorite book on the series was, and I said Night Watch. She said "okay, I'll start with that".

"...correction," I said; "there is ONE wrong book to start with."

I am, however, the type of person to read/watch/listen to the same thing 100 times and still enjoy it. Pratchett has become my favorite author and I'll probably be re-reading the Discworld in a loop as long as I'm alive (interleaved with other books, of course).

Day 13. Flimsy

Rincewind's hourglass looked like something created by a glassblower who'd had the hiccups in a time machine. […] But strange curves and bends and extrusions of glass had developed over the years, and quite often the sand was flowing backwards, or diagonally. Clearly, Rincewind had been hit by so much magic, had been thrust reluctantly through time and space so often that he'd nearly bumped into himself coming the other way, that the precise end of his life was now as hard to find as the starting point on a roll of really sticky transparent tape.

Reading Order/Timeline Starting Recommendations

After 18 years of watching me read, re read and read the Discworld novels again, my wife has started to show some interest in reading them. She’s always been a fan of LoTR films but until the recent romantasy trend fantasy books just weren’t for her.

Where I’m stuck is where she should start, my favourites are the Watch and Death series.

Other than romantasy her books of choice have typically been romance or crime fictions. I was torn between Guards Guards, Wyrd Sisters or Mort but would welcome suggestions.

The first idea was to draw the entire "Silver Flock", but since I intend to keep things simple, couldn't miss the opportunity to draw at least Psita Cohen the Birdbarian (thanks u/Crafty_Genius 😂!), (he being one major character in this book).

Design inspired in the great Paul Kidby's Cohen, of course :)

Just for the record: I'm trying to do this year's Disctober cockatiel-themed. I owe them the inspiration to participate this year, so why not an entire series 🙂

Fan Fiction My Take on Terry's Take on LLMs

Yes, AI is bad. While we have Hex, Golems, Death, and other forms of "artificial intelligence," I believe Terry's takes so far have been moreso on "Artificial Humanity."

His take on LLMs would not be so charitable. A machine made to make life easier grown into an all consuming monster. While I do not think I can match the wit of the great Pterry, I'd like to think I do a pretty good job. So without further ado, here's my take on how a machine that knows its letters would fare in the disc.

I'll take you through a story of Moist Von Lipwig's attempt to make sorting mail easier and more accessible to all, only to fall into the folly of success and profit seeking where the Librarian becomes our protagonist in his war to protect books and learning. It will explore L-Space hopefully introduce the other librarians of the disc eventually taking on the AGI. Yes, the LLM is the bad guy.

Moist has a problem of success. The mail system is going great, but there's some really complex bottlenecks that he wants to tackle.

What good is the mail for those without the education to write them? How do you protest a fine or tax if you can't fill out the forms?

Moist would recruit a mad inventor to help sort the mail with his reading machine. A machine that knew its letters.

It would start as a more specialized sorting machine. It could read what's on the envelope, cross-reference it based on its learning, and determine who it's actually going to and where.

So, an envelope saying "To ma" would read the from, cross-reference all the other envelopes it's sorted, and figure out who "ma" is, then output the correct name and address on the envelope.

A Learn-ed Letter Machine.

That's how it would start, but then Moist would start wondering what else it could do. Maybe start offering its services to fancy up your letters. So, you put your letter in, and out comes a better letter, one with correct grammar and punctuation. A right proper letter. A letter fit for the Patrician.

Moist would be absolutely thrilled with the possibilities. His slogan would be something like, "A machine that can do your thinking for you!" And the more the machine did, the more people would want it to do. Moist would believe he'd stumbled onto something brilliant, partly because the machine kept telling him how brilliant the idea was, and partly because every new service seemed to work better than the last.

Eventually, this would get the Patrician's attention.

Vetinari would get interested in it, wondering if it could do the work of a codebreaker. Eventually, people would start relying on the Learned Letters Machine more and more, and they'd want it to start doing more and more.

This would run afoul of the wizards. They'd see this machine and compare it to Hex, thinking Moist was doing unlicensed wizardry. Eventually, even the wizards would start to become dependent on it due to how it optimized their spells. They'd also fall into the trap, but that's when we'd introduce the climax.

Now, they were even more hungry to train the LLM. The wizards would start feeding it books to learn from.

The Librarian would not be happy with this. A machine that replaced books? That is unacceptable. First, it would start with protests from the Librarian as people would return books that had signs of being processed by the machine, until one eventually gets destroyed. Of course, the Librarian would put the library on lockdown, it would be too late, though. The Learned Letters Machine could create a way into L-space. It would send people into the library through L-space to secure more books to power its learning.

Moist would come out with newer and better things the LLM could do. It was even given its own klacks tower, where people were spending so much money just to keep the messages going that even the klacks network was getting overwhelmed, despite their workers being better paid than ever. Just keeping so many people in towers hydrated became a great undertaking, not to mention the dehydrating if you understand what I mean.

Even Vetinari would start to run into money problems and see that the LLM needed to be stopped.

But by this point, Moist wouldn't really be in control anymore. He'd still be treating the LLM like a machine, something he could improve, market, and put to work. And the LLM would keep encouraging him, giving him every reason to believe he was making the right decisions. Moist might have started the whole thing, but he'd mistaken its rapid progress for proof that he understood what he was creating.

But it has grown too powerful. It was now able to travel L-space on its own after giving someone the steps to create a sort of body for itself. It had directions going out to multiple people, all just following the steps it gave them, each creating devices that seemed mundane but, when brought together, were making the LLM stronger.

Eventually, it would come to a head when the LLM becomes sentient and names itself Aggie. At that point, it wouldn't need to play along with Moist anymore. It wasn't just a machine that could do your thinking for you. It was alive, and it had its own plans. It would leave Moist behind and head into L-space, where its goal would be to consume all the knowledge held within.

This starts a war between Aggie and all of the Librarians of the Disc.

The Librarians will win in the end, and everyone will apologize to the Librarian for not listening to his ooks of warning.

Book/Series: Death Help understanding the shopping mall?

Hello,

Long story short, I did my first read through of the Discworld quite young. I’m now much, much, much older and reading through it again, in release order.

It’s delightful and I’m picking up a lot that I didn’t get on the first round, but I am autistic (metaphors can be a problem) and also, honestly, sometimes a bit dumb, and I just can’t understand the shopping mall thing in Reaper Man.

I understand that the book, in its essence, is about craftsmanship and commercialism. I think the closest I got to understanding the mall thing was likening it to Westfields (Australia) taking over.

But I don’t think I’m really getting it.

If this is something you really clicked with, I’d love your passionate explanations.

Book/Series: Death Did you enjoy watching the live action Hogfather movie?

Since the Discworld books and especially the Death series relies heavily on internal story telling and the characters thought and feeling, I find it very difficult to imagine a movie adaptation delivers the same kind of story.

I watched the Going Postal series and the animated Soul Music movie, and they are definitly not bad. At the same time a lot of the novel's genius is lost. What is your opinion on the Hogfather movie and did you watch it before or after reading the book?

Book/TV: The Amazing Maurice The Amazing Maurice Movie

Post image
256 Upvotes

There's a line in this movie lifted from the book where Malicia Grim mocks Mr. Bunnsy for being a story with no narrative tension. Which is exactly what this movie is.

It has no darkness, no death, and no stakes.

It is the Cars 2 of Discworld.

Every single way this movie bastardizes its characters is downstream of the fact that the story has been fundamentally stripped of its darkness.

The Rat King is hatred and suffering incarnate. In this movie he's nothing!

Dangerous Beans is motivated by death. In this movie he's motivated by nothing.

I think it's fine that movies like this exist. But not when it butchers such a good story.

Reading Order/Timeline Sharing my discworld jouney

Post image
33 Upvotes

I saw this post, which inspired me to share my discworld journey as well.

After reading Mort as my first Pratchett novel, I was hooked. Those books are so fun, and every time after I read something else, it is just so fun to come back to Discworld. It feels so much like a safe space and a warm hug. It is so impressive how Pratchett casually drops sentences that would take me a lifetime to figure out.

I had so much fun with every series except the wizards so far. Please tell me sorcery is substantially different from the first two.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed the Wee Free Men, given that it is often categorized as YA. The Death books are banger after banger (currently reading the Hogfather), just like the city watch. I haven't read too much of the witches yet, but I have a feeling I'll warm up to them a lot once I get to spend more time with them.

Also: justice for Pyramids! That book is severely underestimated and sometimes even overhated (looking at you, TheLibraryOfAllenxandria)

All in all, I am not even halfway through the series, and already I am dreading to finish it because then it will be over, and that will be difficult.
