A coffee klatch (or klatsch) is when a group of people get together to drink coffee and talk. So, probably not, unfortunately.

It is a reference, just in the opposite direction.

TBF if there'd been forums like this in 1980 I imagine someone would have posted some Hot Black Desiato signs when they went through Camden to the HHG2TG sub...

u/jeobleo 1d ago

Wait. That's a reference to something?

Hotblack Desiato are an estate agents in North London.

Douglas Adams saw their sign while out and stole it for the series. There's an apology/note at the front of the book of Restaurant at the End of the Universe iirc.

Huh. I must have known that at some point.

I sitll don't know what Dolmansaxlil is supposed to be an anagram of.

Edit: Just googled it. " A portmanteau of classic British shoe shop chains (Dolcis, Freeman Hardy Willis, Saxone, and Lilley & Skinner"

In this case I'd say its most likely that STP and this airport coffee spot are both referencing the same thing. Two sides of a reference triangle! Edit: two apexes? Apexi?

Apices? Like index, indices

u/ActualBacchus 2d ago

Probably this. Just don't say monkey

This is the correct version, yes

Apexths

u/ActualBacchus 2d ago

Apexeseses. One of those words Nanny Ogg isn't sure how to stop spelling.

Hi, Igor.

I swear this place gets posted monthly

At this point I feel like we need a tag specifically for "We found the thing that STP was referencing".

Rather, roundworld reference

I met Terry Pratchett at a Worldcon coffee klatch!

Like a tea party. I thought liberals should have started a Coffee Klatch to balance the progressives' Tea Party.

Kaffeklatsch. Is german for meaning chit-chat with your (mostly) girlfriends while having some pieces of cake/tart/gateau and caffeinated drinks. Mostly held at the weekend at 3 o clock in the afternoon.

We even had a tv show by that name. Gives a good eximpression.

'Klatsch' means gossip in German, I assume that's where it's from.

u/petrified_eel4615 1d ago

Does German get it from Yiddish, or the other way around?

7

u/nhaines Esme 1d ago

It's onomatopoeic in German, so Yiddish probably borrowed it. Yiddish is a dialect of Middle High German, although I don't have an etymology of German klatschen that goes back earlier than the 17th century. It seems to have been the same since then. (It means a clapping or slapping sound, but seems to have had the meaning of gossip or idle chatter back then, too.)

It is also a cognate with clash and kloten (Dutch), both meaning types of sound.

Most likely yes

No off-beat German reference. Kaffeeklatsch is an informal gathering of friends and colleagues to sit around and converse.

12

u/CrashCulture 1d ago

Pretty sure it's the other way around.

“Klatch coffee: Where coffee is the conversation.”

And the conversation is AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH

I sincerely hope they have some strong liquor on hand for those who get way too knurd.

2

u/ChimoEngr 1d ago

Maybe, but not for sure. Coffee klatch has been a term for ages, like over a hundred years ago. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/coffee%20klatch Sir Terry most likely decided that it made for a funny name for a nation, and since coffee culture is a big part of the middle east, smashed the two ideas together.

u/theacehamster 1d ago

Just don’t get knurd when drinking there

If it was a curry house maybe.

Who’s getting knurd

This is absolutely a reference. Yes, "klatch" is a known reference to what the English speaking world calls a "coffee break." But pTerry picked up on it and made it a country that produced coffee that would put you right over the line into hyper-awareness. For someone to make their coffee shop "Klatch," they had to understand what "Knurd" means.  [Or, weren't very literate. Luck is always a possibility.]
