Discussion What do you think about companion/pet systems in a free digital TCG?

Hi everyone!

I've been working on CardPackHunter, a free digital TCG website focused on collecting cards and opening booster packs.

Opening packs is the main goal of the website, but I've also started adding smaller systems to give visitors something to do between pack openings.

One of the latest additions is a companion/pet system. You can adopt pets, feed them, and earn Silver Coins that you can use to open more TCG packs. The idea is to make collecting feel a little more engaging while giving players another way to earn in-game currency.

The website is completely free, and the additional systems are meant to support the main experience rather than take attention away from collecting cards.

I also want to be transparent about the artwork: the cards currently use AI-generated art. If the website eventually generates enough income to support it, my goal is to hire artists to create original artwork for the cards.

I'd really like to hear your thoughts:

  • Do you enjoy companion or pet systems in digital card games?
  • Do you think smaller systems like feeding pets, daily activities, and earning in-game currency make you more likely to return to a website?
  • What kinds of activities would you enjoy alongside opening packs and collecting cards?
  • Do you prefer a digital TCG to focus almost entirely on card collecting, or do you like having other things to work towards?

I'm building this as a hobby project, and I'd love to learn what other digital card collectors think.

If you're interested, you can check it out here: https://cardpackhunter.com/

Thanks for reading!

[Dev] After 3 years of solo dev, my simultaneous-turn Card Battler 'Grimoria' finally has a Steam page for wishlists (with full PC/Mobile Cross-Play)!

Hi everyone!

For the past 3 years, I’ve been working full-time as a solo developer on my online card battler, Grimoria. Today is a personal milestone for me: after what felt like an eternity of work, the Steam store page is finally live for wishlists!

When I decided to bring the game to PC, I didn't want to just do a lazy mobile port. I spent the last few months heavily overhauling the visuals for native 16:9 widescreen, adding dynamic candlelight, shadows, and an atmospheric tabletop feel so it plays like a true PC game. There's still a lot of polish I want to add before the full PC launch in a few months, but having the first playable build running smoothly on Steam felt amazing.

With this, Grimoria now connects all major platforms: PC (Steam, Google Play Games PC) and Mobile (iOS, Android). Because I built the server from scratch, players can match against each other seamlessly across the globe regardless of device. For a solo dev, getting full online cross-play running is great achievment.

Alongside the steam store page, I just released a brand-new creature to expand the tactical meta: The Dullahan, the legendary headless knight riding under the veil of midnight upon a black warhorse.

  • Ability: "Deal 1 damage on loss."
  • Tactical Use: It acts as a punishing opening card. Even if an opponent counters your play with higher strength, the Dullahan still strikes back. In 4-Player Battle Royale, its retaliation damage hits all opponents on the board, not just the round winner.

Under the hood, I’ve also rolled out a ton of client optimizations, server-side tweaks, and bug fixes.

As always, the game remains 100% Free-to-Play with zero Pay-to-Win mechanics. (Monetization is strictly cosmetic)

If you enjoy fast-paced tactical card games, short turns and matches, or unique game modes, adding Grimoria to your Steam Wishlist helps me out a lot as an indie dev:

Thank you so much to everyone who gave continuous feedback and supported me over the last months. <3

Discussion Ayre Battles: Heritage Academy (Lets learn how to play Yasu)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

One of the things I wanted to capture in Ayre Battles was the importance of spacing.

In this gameplay breakdown, Yasu starts outside his preferred range. Instead of attacking immediately, I use movement and card interactions to close the distance and start applying pressure.

The game also features reactions, counters, hitstun, and momentum shifts, so you're not simply waiting for your opponent to finish their turn.

I'm curious what fighting-game and card-game players think of this approach to combat.

Other I'm making Valdrin, a card game where you command your deck's units on a 3D board

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone! I'm the creator of Valdrin, a tactical card game that combines building a deck with commanding its units on a 3D board. You summon units, move them into position, and fight with the cards you've chosen.

There's also a fantasy campaign to explore, alongside solo battles and online duels. The idea is to give your deck a world to travel through as well as opponents to face.

I put together this 38-second trailer to show the cards, battles, and exploration in the current game. I'm looking for more players for the closed beta, so if this sounds like your kind of card game, I'd love for you to try it.

To request access, join the Discord and ask for an Alpha Key:
https://discord.gg/UC9RYfBMX

The game is still in development. Feedback from people actually playing it will help me work out what needs improving.

We joked about making a video game out of a 20-year-old board game. Now we're actually doing it.

Hey everyone!

We’re a small indie team working on the digital version of Potion-making: Path of the Alchemist. It’s a tabletop classic from Eastern Europe that’s been around for 20 years. A new edition came out recently, we played it together, and just couldn’t resist bringing it to PC.

Our main rule was that it should feel like the same board game. You still collect ingredients, brew potions, chain them into elixirs, essences, powders, and creatures, cast spells, and use talismans. We kept the core game mechanic: everyone shares one table. That carefully brewed potion of yours? It might be the missing ingredient in your opponent’s next recipe. And you can do the same to them. Many friendships have been tested by this game.

Going digital changes some iconic for board games things:

- No setup and no sorting hundreds of tokens
- Game tracks recipes, effects, movement, and scoring, so you only worry about your next move
- An interactive tutorial instead of a rulebook reading
- Animations and effects: ingredients mix in an alchemical vessel, spells have visuals, and portals open
- Online multiplayer, or AI opponents when your friends are busy or you just want to practice

But we’re not trying to replace the tabletop version. Nothing beats watching a friend’s face after a sneaky steal. This is just another way to play.

The demo is on Steam now, and the full release is coming on November 10. We’re also taking part in Steam Next Fest!

Curious about your take: which board games would you love to see go digital, and which adaptations did it right (or wrong)?

Hi there,

so i've been a TCG enjoyer since i was 3 due to an awesome neighbor and have tried just about every one, so i've been thinking of starting my own for fun and local play with the guys on game nights. I've always been creating custom cards so this was super fun to make!

So far they've really enjoyed it and egged me to try making an online version of it, so i did and it's currently live on https://groobi.itch.io/lacuna-ccg.

Of course it's still in development so some things don't work perfectly, as there are over 400 cards so a bug can come in here and there, but the core gameplay is here.

I'd love to hear what likeminded people like you think of it, and maybe join the discord, would love to expand upon it if the feedback is positive <3

You gave me honest feedback on Street Wars. A lot has changed - anyone up for another round?

A few weeks ago, I shared the card game I’m building here and asked people to pick it apart. You delivered lol.

Some of you played dozens of matches and built full collections. Others pointed out confusing card information, frustrating early opponents, and choices that needed to feel more meaningful. I appreciate both. Hearing where someone stopped having fun is just as useful as hearing what kept them playing.

We’ve made a ton of changes since that post, and I’d love to get returning players and fresh eyes on the updated game.

For anyone seeing it for the first time, Street Wars is a turf-war card game about rival crews fighting over three city blocks. You have six turns to take two of them.

You and your opponent commit cards face down, then reveal your plays. Each block has its own rules, and Double Down lets you raise the stakes when you think you have the advantage. Whether you actually do is another question.

A few things to know:

  • Around five minutes per match, with 12-card decks and six factions.
  • Solo play, online 1v1, and 2v2 where you can team up with a friend.
  • Free to play in your browser, on desktop or mobile. No download or signup needed to try it.
  • All 90 cards can be earned by playing.

Play here: https://playstreetwars.com/

I’d also love to get a regular group together in Discord to find matches, share decks, debate balance, and help shape where the game goes. Bring your weird deck ideas and your brutally honest feedback. I want to make something people keep coming back to.

Join the Discord: https://discord.gg/arzxwDWF9s

If you try it, tell me this: what made you want another match - or what made you close the tab?

Best way to move forward with a passion project?

Hey everyone, I spent a year working on my card game Cards of Myth. Currently there's no IAP. Originally I built it to combine aspects of games I enjoyed, notably:

- Collecting rare art cards (like from Pokemon)
- The feeling of grinding & customizing a build (like from Summoners War) - achieved this by granting XP to a character from game play & duplicate cards being sacrificed, then you level the card up and can choose a side to boost a power, etc.
- An infinite tower mode with rewards (like from Souls Habby) - though admittedly, I feel like I fall flat on this one, the way that game works has more "reproducible strategy" than a card game does.
- An energy currency that prevents users from leveling non stop for free. You can play the game as much as you want, but you can only do 20 ranked pvp matches a day and you burn a currency in order to get rewards from solo play (apart from tower milestone rewards).

Based on this, I made the tower scale by increasing the power values of the opponent cards + those decks don't face the same power restrictions a player's deck faces. Therefor as you get higher, it's not just about being able to outsmart the AI but also having played enough to have strong enough cards to do it.

This brings me to where I'm stuck now... I've realized a resounding distaste for the economics of the game. The points are valid, and the underlying concerns I'd actually already accounted for but now they make me question my own thoughts.

  1. People feel like the card leveling = P2W. In reality, I always assumed the draft-based PVP would be the main competitive mode and in that mode I don't use the player's grinded power values. Sure you still get ranked in the tower, but to a much lower extent than PVP rankings I think. Besides that point though, if I don't think the power values should be included in the main competitive mode, why do I think they should be included in the rest of the game?

  2. If I'm being honest, part of the reason for scaling the power values of the tower mode's decks is that I don't think I have the ability to quickly produce a super strong AI that challenges my strongest players. So it's a crutch I'm leaning on. But that's not a good enough excuse.

  3. My goal is to eventually profit from this game, to some extent. I don't think I'll "hit it big" but it would be a dream to be able to quit my day job and focus on this. I guess I thought microtransactions like pack openings were the best option for this, but now I'm seeing people saying they prefer to just pay for an expansion pack and get access to all cards at once so they can theorycraft and build their own decks without worrying about RNG.

I hear ALL of that. But now I feel crippled by what to do next...
- Do I drop leveling cards & find another way to reward players for using specific cards a ton? Initial thought is move the rare art versions to be unlocked by matches played with a card

- Do I drop the infinite tower and figure out something more curated even if people complete it quicker?

- Do I scrap pack openings and rely on just expansion pack pricing? How do you make that sustainable or do you not because I'm an solo developer and and it's a pointless dream anyways?

- Do I ignore the reactions and just add micro-transactions for pack openings & an energy currency to limit rewards from games?

Looking forward to everyone's opinions on this
