Discussion / Question Trimester 2 and Beyond: The Grit, Growth, and Next Steps Megathread

Hi r/deakin!

Hope everyone had a nice break before the Nov 1 results dropped. It’s been a bit over a week – a good pause to sit with this year’s highs, lows, and everything in between.

A few reminders as we move forward:

Individual exam papers don’t usually come with routine feedback, but if you have particular questions, your Unit Chair or Student Central is there to help.

For general feedback on the unit or assessments, reach out to your Unit Chair for an EoUA review (just know this isn’t a formal results review).

Results for special or supplementary assessments and the Start Anytime calendar should be up within 10 working days. If yours isn’t showing yet, check in with your Unit Chair.

If you’re unclear about your WAM calculation, especially if it’s unique to your course, Student Central can clarify.

Apologies for getting this rolling a bit later than usual.

Looking back, this year has been very transformative, stacked with revelations and revisions…mostly pretty unamusing, whether good or not. Through it all, one thing I always come back to is the ability to bounce back. Days later, things settle, and emotions level out on a fine, level playing field.

And of late, I’m tired, probably always tired (aren’t we all?). Reading loads about obscure physics in connection with electronics, maths and music. Writing exotically introspective stuff on the side. I revisit later, surprised by the razzle-dazzle, even more surprised that it's only to gawk at most of it. It’s compartmentalized, so I don’t dwell on it too much in day-to-day interactions.

For those who decided to take a break because it was too much, know that things will feel a little less taxing with time. For those of you juggling it all – from career to family to classes – we understand that there were times when dropping out felt therapeutic (not to say it wouldn’t be). Ultimately, it depends on where you are in life and the 360-degree lens you’re using to take in what’s going around. If you’re still here, one thing is certain.. you’re setting an inspiring example of dedication and tenacity, showing that it can be done – not just for your family but for all of us.

For those clocking in extra hours, acting as your own support system, and reestablishing the much-needed nitty-gritty of prerequisite knowledge and skills under a serious time crunch, it’s inspiring to see such love and commitment to clarity in learning, even as you're tempted to race through important stuff in a rigid course sequence with limited offerings (especially in Tri-3 :S) and not much flexibility to move things around to make the chronology make sense. A journey can be rigorous and a little nutso, without being rigid. Thank you for treating learning as something to savor and fully experience.

And… for those graduating, cross the finishing line and finish fine like an ace!

So, where’s everyone at? What could we focus on understanding better, and where are we looking to go next? SEBE folks, especially Engineering – how’s it going? Chime in, y’all.

I’m all ears for those open, proactive, and supportive tidbits. With enough interest, we’ll gladly set up follow-up threads, AMAs, or Q&As focused on specific faculties and courses. Just got to let us know or do one anyway :)

Hope we keep showing up for each other, finding strength in this space as we balance multiple fronts. Thanks to everyone who’s here, who posts, comments, and encourages. You're what keeps this community alive, and the numbers show it.

I find myself manually flairing most incoming posts, but we hope the community will start using the system consistently. Added a flair guide (visible under “Related Subreddits” on the right for PC users, or by tapping rdeakin> and scrolling down on mobile).

Here’s to a great 2025 (irresistible) ahead. Take care, stay connected and keep moving forward!

Discussion Trimester 1 Results Megathread

Hello r/deakin community ,

I hope everyone had a refreshing break! Did any particular music or outings help you recharge?
How are you all feeling? Do you have a tagline about it for us?

Week 0 has begun, and soon we’ll get our Trimester 1 results, releasing on July 4th at 10:30 am via the StudentConnect Portal (‘Assessment and Exams’ -> ‘View your results’).

Congrats to those who already got their Semester 1 results on June 27th!

A few points to keep in mind :

In future, to get your results 30 minutes earlier via SMS, update your contact details in the StudentConnect Portal under ‘Assessment and Exams’.

Check Results key to understand your grades better and consider joining the results release webinar for guidance from Student Advisers.

Individual exam papers typically do not receive routine feedback. If you have questions, talk to your Unit Chair or contact Student Central.

Asking for feedback on EoUAs from the Unit Chair is for unit and/or assessment task feedback, not a formal results review.

Ensure that results, including those from special or supplementary assessments or the Start Anytime calendar, are released within 10 working days. Otherwise, please reach out to your Unit Chair.

Contact Student Central for help calculating your WAM, especially if your course uses a non-standard method.

Use this thread to discuss everything about results as they come in: your expectations, reactions, and action steps.

Everyone responds in their own way. Some may want to sit with it quietly, while others may prefer to discuss them immediately.

Those who want to write out their thoughts, your reflections could also help future learners in their prep. You may not be able to cover everything in its entirety, but try to discuss what you can. Feel free to ask questions, share reflections, or seek and offer support in this thread.

Let’s unpack the past few months ; every insight or oversight, big or small, is welcome.

If there’s interest, we can branch out into follow-up posts for discussions specific to faculties or classes. Let's start the conversation and see where it leads us!

Best of luck everyone!

P.S.

Exciting update everyone. The 'Course, school or faculty' user flair is editable.

Just head over to the sidebar and find the option to edit flair. It's a pencil icon on a PC. On the Reddit app, tap the three dots located at the top-right corner of the community page. This will open a menu where you can find the 'Change user flair' option. These should work!

Established a post flair system! Here’s an opportunity for everyone to classify posts and make navigating the sub much easier.

Enjoy customizing!

Placements / Jobs / Careers epr781 placement help please!!

i didn't wanna be the type of student to come to reddit instead of student central or something similar but i feel like i have no other way of asking for advice about this without feeling like an idiot reaching out to student central.

i'm enrolled to epr781 for t3 which i was under the impression the placement would be undertaken in t3 which was incredibly foolish looking back at it now.

i have just googled the "first block" for this units placement which i'm assuming most t3 students will be lumped into. the dates on inplace say they span across nov-late feb, but the deakin placement calendar says 1st feb to the 19th of feb.

one particular date that falls on a weekday during this time frame, i literally CANNOT attend placement, as i have an event i already rsvp'd, planned, and paid to go to, back in the first half of this year. i knew it was risky to agree practically a year out, especially for a weekday event, but i didn't realise my placement would "definitely" be covering this date.

i have never done placement. i have zero teaching experience. i genuinely have no clue what to expect let alone handle trying to get this one seemingly non-negotiable day off. is there ANY possible way i can defer placement just for this one day? can i make it up outside the placement block or extend the block? i don't know how any of this works and the more i look into it the more stressed i am and i just need someone to kindly explain what's possible and what steps to take. i know my placement blocks haven't been confirmed, so i don't even know if its a 100% chance i get put into the february block, but its looking like a 99% chance at this rate.

i'm not trying to do 14/15 days instead, i still very much would love to, and need to, complete the full 15 days. but if anyone has done placement and has needed a day off, your guidance will be greatly accepted. and if you are a lurking staff member with any knowledge of what to do i will also listen gratefully.

thank you so much 🙏

Academic Advice Can clouddeakin detect if you’ve copied text from an online unsupervised assessment?

Hi everyone, i’ve recently taken an online assessment that is unsupervised. I’ve use the command + C feature to copy some of the questions so i can research more about it later due to the time restrictions and to see if i can pass my current answer i wrote in the assessment as a good answer. You know, to evaluate and see how well i’ve done in the exam before the results are released. All of the sudden it occurred to me that it could be flagged as me copying and pasting things into an AI platform. Now i’m overly paranoid, could anyone tell me if they flag it? or am i okay?

Deadlines / Extensions / Grades Special considerations

If I’m applying for special considerations due to medical reasons, is it okay to submit a normal medical certificate from the gp or does it have to be the Deakin one. Some of the gp’s I’ve been too are not interested in completing that long from or they’ve even asked money for it 😭

So I was hoping submitted the normal med cert would be fine.

Prospective Student Sports Management Exams at Deakin

Hi everyone! I’m planning to pursue a Master’s in Sports Management at Deakin. How are exams conducted in this course? Are there traditional written exams, or is it mostly assignments, presentations, and group projects? Would love to hear from current students about their experience!

Deadlines / Extensions / Grades Grading Appeal

I'm 0.5% away in raw marks from the next rung on the grading ladder for one of my units🥲 (79.5 - just short of a HD overall). Is there a way to appeal this and try to get awarded the extra marks?

Or should I assume this gets rounded up since the transcript is to 2 sf?

Deadlines / Extensions / Grades Can I internally transfer from Commerce to Law/Commerce if applications close on 12 February but results come out on 25 February?

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to get some advice from anyone who has experience with internal course transfers at Deakin, particularly into a Law double degree.

I'm planning to study the Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin in Trimester 3, 2026, with the goal of internally transferring into the Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Laws double degree for Trimester 1, 2027.

My concern is the timing. Deakin's T3 results are scheduled to be released on 25 February 2027, while T1 classes start on 1 March 2027. The course transfer application deadline is also before the T3 results are released.

I'm wondering whether Deakin would allow me to submit my transfer application while my results are pending and then assess it once my marks come out. Alternatively, is it possible to receive conditional approval based on meeting the required WAM.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and were you able to apply before results were released?

Deadlines / Extensions / Grades special consideration for PT reasons?

Helloo

There was a completely unexpected and unannounced (well it was announced only this morning) interruption/bus replacements for the dandenong-okleigh line, and there was absolutely no way that I wouldve made it in time for my 9am exam bc of the major delays.

Im aware that Deakin is extremely strict and will reject PT reasons, but seeing as this interruption was only announced this morning (and it was a 9am exam), would I have a chance of being accepted?

Ive already contacted PTV and asked for a formal statement as evidence

Accommodation / Travel / Parking Anyone looking to rent a room for 180/wk close to uni?

I currently live in a share house thats literally a minute walk from deakin. It’s a really cute place, bit of an older building but the price is unbeatable. Ive been living here for about two months now and really don’t have any complaints. All my housemates are lovely, the bus stop is right in front of my house, etc etc.

However, I work super far away which means that I commute more than I want to and I feel like I would love to live closer to work.

My lease doesn’t end until February so if anyone is interested in my place please shoot me a message and we can arrange a viewing and potentially a lease transfer:))
