🤷 Other Are the student surveys anonymous?

Had a tutor that was very unmotivating and almost seemed disinterested in teaching the class. They almost seemed to have an attitude as if it was a chore for them. I’m gonna be honest in the survey because it honestly made me not want to go to class, it was like what is the point if there’s nothing to gain.

🤷 Other Shitty unit assessment schedule

This is just a rant cos I’m annoyed at how one of my units has organised their assessments. Why are they all due in the last few weeks of uni. There’s only 3 more weeks are there is two essays (around 2k words) and a final test left. I don’t get why they’re getting us to do two essays and have them due literally one after the other, they could’ve at least spread it out and not left it for the very end of sem. But I also feel like it would’ve made more sense to just do one major essay and have it worth like 30%? Instead they’re like 2k words for only 15%. That leaves no time for feedback or anything like what they’d usually do in a unit. 15% for the amount of work feels pointless. Tbh they’ve basically not even mentioned the assignments in class, I’m only going by the actual instructions posted. I feel like they hardly mention anything tbh about any of the assessments coming up.

The final test is in class too literally during the exact same time when the other stuff is due which feels unfair cos it’s basically an exam that’s not in exam period, so I will struggle to study for it since I’ll be completing the essay amongst all my other assignments. Why couldn’t they count it as an exam so it could at least give me a bit more time to study ughh.

Most of my units have 3-4 main assessments but this one has 5 which feels a bit unnecessary. It’s also funny how the unit highlights how no AI use is permitted when it seems they’ve just created the tutorial activities straight out of chat, a lot of their stuff looks just like Claude. Even the exemplar assignments they’ve provided in questioning if they’re even real?

🤷 Other Looking for Potential Cofounder with Web Dev/Web Design/Coding Skills

I’m a second year business student majoring in entrepreneurship. I’m actively working towards launching my own startup once i graduate, or even potentially before then. I’m mainly focused on the social media and networking industries and have multiple ideas I’m working on.

I firmly have the business side of things covered, but I’m interested in finding one or multiple cofounders to work with who have experience in web development, web design or similar (whether you’re doing a degree in one of these courses or not). This is mainly so that I can work with someone who can build/manage the websites and apps necessary for the startups’ success.

I’m aware I can use AI to build an app or website for me, but I am firmly against the use of it for both moral and practical reasons. This is an open call for the foreseeable future, so if anybody wants to get in contact and talk about the possibility of working together, please DM me.

👋 New Student Help Is Swinburne a good choice for an international student aiming to work in Australia after a Master's in Mechanical Engineering?

Hi everyone,

I'm a Chinese undergraduate student majoring in Automation, and I'm trying to decide which pathway would give me the best chance of building a career in Australia after graduation.

My university in China has a partnership program with Swinburne University of Technology. Through this program, I can complete a 3+1+1 pathway:

- 3 years of undergraduate study at my current university in China

- 1 year of undergraduate study at Swinburne

- 1 additional year at Swinburne for a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field, depending on the official program structure)

The main advantages are that the application process is relatively straightforward, and I wouldn't need to take IELTS or apply independently, subject to the program's requirements.

However, my long-term goal is to find a suitable engineering job in Australia after graduation, so I'm trying to make an informed decision before committing to this pathway.

I'd really appreciate honest opinions from Australian students, Swinburne graduates, engineers, or anyone familiar with the Australian engineering job market.

I have a few questions:

  1. How is Swinburne regarded in Australia, particularly in engineering? What do local employers generally think of its graduates? Does its reputation differ significantly from that of universities in the Group of Eight (Go8)?

  2. How realistic is it for an international graduate from Swinburne to find an engineering job in Australia? I'm interested in areas such as automation, mechanical engineering, robotics, and mechatronics. I'd especially like to hear from international graduates who have actually gone through the job search.

  3. How much does university reputation matter when applying for graduate engineering positions? Would graduating from a Go8 university make a meaningful difference, or do practical skills, internships, projects, and work experience matter more?

  4. Would you recommend taking this 3+1+1 pathway, or completing my bachelor's degree in China and applying independently for a master's at a Go8 university? The partnership pathway is more convenient, but I'm wondering whether the potential benefits of attending a different university would justify the additional application effort and cost.

  5. If your goal were to work and build a long-term career in Australia, what would you focus on during university to improve your chances of getting hired?

Studying in Australia would be a significant financial investment for my family, so I want to look beyond university rankings and marketing materials and understand the actual employment outcomes.

I'd be grateful for any honest advice, including negative experiences or things you wish you had known before choosing your university.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

🤷 Other Stressing

Anyone else stressed af? How did I end up with all of my assignments in the last 2 weeks this sem rip. I have 4 assignments in week 12 and my exam is like the first day of the exam period so even if I get extensions I’ll need prayers 🙏🫠. I’d start them earlier but I’m still working on other assignments due beforehand plus all the content explaining those assignments is not yet out 😆😆

📚 Unit / Course Advice Electives in Master Data science experience

Hi, I'm doing my Master's in Data Science at Swinburne, and I need to choose some elective subjects. I'm not sure which ones would fit best with the field. These are the three options in my study plan: Internet Security, AI for Finance and Accounting, and Advanced Software Development.

I'm not with a background on Coding so I don't want to take the advanced software dev. Do you have any experience to share? Thank you

I would like to know the advantages and disadvantages of both. Time wise, Difficulty wise and how the classes are taken in general.

In essence which one would you suggest and why?

My main goal is to do research and possibly a PhD.

Any help or other suggestions would be much appreciated.

📚 Unit / Course Advice Help with electrical units

I need help with my electrical machines unit whenver i try talk to the lecturer he either makes me more confused or tells me to email the convenor. The convenor has been ghosting my emails for two weeks now we havent even seen him in person. And in the tutorials, theres not enough time to answer all the question because they still have to cover the weeks tutorial questions. With only these contact hours is there like a helpdesk for these units? Any students who have knowledge please DM me on reddit. The content isnt radically difficult but theres just so much fluff and lack of information on whats assessable.

🤷 Other Bachelor of Social science (behavioural studies)

For those who have completed this degree or in the progress of completing this degree, what job prospectives are there??? Are you better off getting a social work degree or something that qualifies you or gives you ahpra registration?? Feels like a ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ type of degree. Thoughts? Alone it’s not enough to get you into BSP, it’s not listed as an approved course for community work. Am I missing something ?

🫶 Seeking Support Swinburne University of Technology — Please Take Notice of Serious Allegations Involving a Student

Thumbnail

We are bringing this matter to the attention of Swinburne University of Technology regarding its student, Mohammad Nafiz, and serious allegations concerning his involvement, alongside three other former students of bisesj, in the creation and distribution of AI-generated through telegram, discord, Instagram and many more, Which included non-consensual sexual images of approximately 20–25 girls ranging from age 13 to 25, including minors, connected to Bangladesh International School (English Section) Jeddah (BISESJ)

According to statements from affected members, the four perpetrator (which includes nafiz) were involved in creating these AI-generated images and distributing them among themselves and resulting in the accumulation of up to 1,500 illicit files of minors and adults. There are also allegations that the material was used against the victims through blackmail, threat and coercion. The girls' images were reportedly taken and manipulated without their knowledge or consent, turning ordinary photographs into sexualised material and distributing it despite the serious consequences this could have for the girls involved.

These were real girls who never consented to having their images altered or used in this way. They did nothing to deserve what happened to them. Yet, according to the victims and people supporting them, some of the girls have subsequently faced slut-shaming, victim-blaming, harassment, intimidation, and pressure because of the very abuse they experienced.

Instead of being supported, some victims have reportedly been made to feel as though they are responsible for what happened to them. Their pictures were allegedly exploited without their consent, and they are now having to deal with the emotional distress, humiliation, fear, and damage to their privacy that followed.

There have also been serious concerns about the response from some parents and members of the school community. According to statements from affected individuals, some parents of the accused have defended their children and engaged in behaviour described by victims as victim-blaming, slut-shaming, threatening, or otherwise enabling. These are matters that the appropriate authorities should assess rather than the victims being expected to carry the burden themselves.

We are sharing this information so that Swinburne University of Technology is aware of these allegations involving one of its students. We understand that the university was not responsible for the alleged original conduct, and this post is not intended to blame the university for what happened.

Rather, we are asking the university to take notice, review any credible information provided through the appropriate channels, and take whatever action is appropriate under its policies if the allegations are substantiated.

Our concern is also about preventing this from happening to anyone else. Students should be able to attend schools and universities without having to worry about their photographs being exploited, sexualised, distributed without consent, or used to harass them.

We respectfully ask Swinburne to ensure that its students understand the seriousness of non-consensual intimate imagery and AI-generated sexual abuse, that appropriate safeguarding measures are available, and that students who report such conduct can receive support without fear of retaliation.

The victims deserve privacy, compassion, and support. They should not have to defend their character or explain why someone else chose to exploit their images. Their suffering should not become another reason to shame them.

We are not asking for harassment, doxxing, or punishment without due process. We are asking for the matter to be taken seriously, for the victims to be treated with dignity, and for appropriate action to be taken if the allegations are substantiated.

We hope the university will take the necessary steps to ensure that its student community remains safe and that behaviour of this nature is not tolerated.

This is about protecting students, supporting victims, and preventing anyone else from experiencing the same harm.

👋 New Student Help AusPost parcel marked as delivered but missing at SPW building

I'm currently living at Swinburne SPW building in Hawthorn and recently had an issue with an Australia Post delivery.

I orderded a parcel from Chemist Warehouse. The tracking says it was delivered, but I never received it or got any call from Auspost. AusPost told me that since the parcel didn't require a signature, the driver may have left it in a "safe location".

But how can I check whole areas in the university?

I also ordered some things from Amazon, they were all delivered in the student residence, so I use the same address.

Has anyone had the same issue before? Where does AusPost normally leave parcels here - reception, outside the building, or somewhere?

Also, for valuable deliveries like laptops, what do you normally use, student residence is ok?

Thanks

👋 New Student Help Considering a PhD at Swinburne as an international student — is this funding arrangement realistic?

Hi everyone,

I’m an Indian applicant currently in discussion with a prospective supervisor at Swinburne for a February 2027 PhD in the design/AI space.

My situation is a little unusual, and I’d really appreciate input from current/former Swinburne PhD students.

My prospective supervisor has said that if I secure external funding to cover my living expenses, he will try to arrange a tuition fee waiver for me.

I understand that after admission and obtaining a visa, I could potentially apply for sessional teaching (TA) positions, subject to availability. RA opportunities may also be possible depending on funded projects.

I have some savings to cover my initial living expenses, but I am actively looking for an external stipend/scholarship for the longer term.

My questions are:

  1. How realistic is it to get a tuition fee waiver through a supervisor/school in this kind of situation?
  2. How common are TA/sessional teaching opportunities for international PhD students at Swinburne?
  3. How difficult is it to find RA work?
  4. Are there internal scholarships or funding opportunities that become available after starting the PhD?
  5. Overall, would you consider this a reasonable arrangement, assuming I have enough savings to get started?

I’d especially appreciate responses from current international PhD students at Swinburne.

🤷 Other What happens if you go over word limit?

for one of my assignments the word limit was 1700 + or - 10%. I went way over the word count and I didn’t even realise (I think like 2300). But I don’t see how I could even meet the word count? It was a template format with VERY specific requirements in therms of the answers, they wanted all the research process shown. Part of the template also required literally copying and pasting requirements from job ads quoting exactly what they said. That part of the template took up a lot of words as there were a lot of requirements I had to copy and paste, plus I had to use references for all of them. I don’t see why there was a word count even. Idk what to do am i completely fucked
Should I contact the convenor?
