In Alaska, we call ‘em Dumpster Ravens

….Sinnott and Rod King, a UAF researcher, have both observed that ravens have a penchant for Chinese food – noodles in particular.

Ravens often gather near restaurant Dumpsters, according to both researchers.

Despite their scrappy, street-wise image, ravens are considered to be one of the most intelligent birds – extremely social with a wide range of vocalizations and behaviour…..

I mean, a crows gotta eat, right?

This is one of the couple who wait for me each day.

I have a couple of crows that I feed a few days a week in my work lunch break and they recognise me from a mile away..

This morning , I was cycling through the park going to work, and started up the road nearby and then I realised that there was a crow keeping pace with me as I cycled, it was this little guy who comes every time I go to the park, I've never noticed him flying parallel to me while I've been on the bike before though! And yes of course I chucked the peanut which I happen to have about my person and i didn't even have to stop the bike!

There is like a big plop of shit right on my car where I usually see the crows. Not only is this insulting, but it’s straight up disrespectful and they’ve seen me come out of the car so they know

Don’t trust these birds

Couldn't get a good pic cuz my camera is busted :(

I had been feeding the distant crows in the parking lot at my new job for the last couple months (at least 1 scrub Jay too). They got pretty comfy buzzing past my sunroof to look in so I wasn't surprised when I left to a gas station and they followed

I went to a second gas station because the first didn't have the thing i wanted and 3 of them just kind of met me on the ground when I opened my car door.

I was so shocked I reached for my emergency p-nuts and startled them a bit, so I tossed a few out to keep them here and made a big pile for them to dig into when I left!

It suddenly dawned on me just how large they were, like big toned ducks or chicken sizes and the beaks were more alike.

It hit me when I saw them pick up 4 peanuts at a time for a total of 8-10, HOLY PELICAN!

So far the most I've seen is a big daddy crow carrying 4-5 peanuts lined up in their craw carefully, but these big dudes were just shoveling them up like construction equipment!

Medium: willow charcoal and white chalk

Since people on here pointed out the plumicorns I can’t unsee how they display them constantly

Just wanted to share what I saw on my cameras today because i think it‘s cute.

This Magpie took a small peanut with shell and decided to cache it on my balcony. She really takes her time to find the right cache and makes sure no one sees it.
I love how she abandoned the first cache because of the 2nd Magpie and how she checks through the window if I am at home (they are still afraid of me!).

How do I explain her that I will have to replace the flowers with winterproof ones and her cache will be lost ??

Comment if you've seen a crow do this! 😂

The crows decided to photobomb me tonight. The 2nd photo looks like a bat… fitting for the season.

As the garden season winds down my guard Crow returns for the winter once the fledglings know how to forage alone. This is the first year our old male we call Carl is allowing his young to stay and share food once in a while. I'm thinking he's passing on my yard as he is getting old. He adds a lot of joy to my life as I sit here just a few feet away in my greenhouse.

My local magpie was absolutely upset about jackdaws eating all peanuts, so he started his whisper song

And just like that, my first crow season has come to an end. My work crow friends and my backyard crow friends have all headed south, Maybel left Monday, a week after her parents Frank and Beauty.

I’m going to miss them so much, but I’m so grateful for the time I had with them. The joy these birds have brought me is hard to put into words. They’ve become such a big part of my days, and honestly, they’ve helped me more with my sobriety than they’ll ever know.

Who knew a bunch of crows could mean so much? ❤️

Until next season, my feathered friends. Stay safe out there. See you in the spring!

Edit: to add this video is a couple weeks old.

They make cute eating sounds

apologies for the slightly poor quality. got this as my first tattoo in august, & and its now fully healed. i might get it coloured later on to match s hooded crows colour scheme! :)) i'd requested a crow alongside a foxglove plant and im really happy with it <3

(less relevant to the post but story behind my tattoo

im neurodivergent and finally learning my special interests arent "bad". i got this to represent my years long infatuation with poisons [both the danger and the medicine] and crows, which for me go hand in hand. its an incredibly important piece of art to me <3)

Twin Peaks, San Francisco, CA

I live in a neighborhood with a decent amount of crows, but I've never seen them interact in big groups before. Tonight at 2 a.m. I heard a crow cawing under my window (and I also want to note, it looked distressed – at least to me – pacing back and forth, looking around constantly). I'll admit I don't know much about their sleep-wake cycle but I always assumed they'd sleep at 2 a.m. However, 15+ crows arrived at the calls of the first one, flew around for a minute, and all settled down next to the first one on the trees/power lines. What was this behavior?

I’ve been feeding the crows in the park by my house every day for a few months now. This morning my cat followed me into the park as I was heading to the gym. I had already fed the crows earlier. Then they saw my cat following me and seemed to go for him - as you can see in the video, they were really loud and swooped down above him in an intimidating way, it was scary!

Caws of Murder field report: suspects were seen loitering near the garden bench and tree line. No arrests have been made, as all witnesses were intimidated by confident eye contact and excellent tailoring.

i know the birder opinion on bluejays is... divided, to say in the least, but love them nearly as much as i love crows. i am having some success inviting both species into my yard, but the jay/s (I only ever see one at once) is getting bolder and has finally started landing in my yard for peanuts. initially, i wanted to feed the bluejays on the platform feeder and the crows on the ground feeder, but my jay hasnt noticed the platform feeder and seems to be gravitating towards the crow's peanuts. in any case, i havent had any issues with them coming to the yard at the same time yet, but should i be worried? i love both species very much and wouldn't want either to be excluded.

I'm pretty sure this fellow is a raven but the beak is throwing me off .

This was only completed a few weeks ago but I am in love! Clearly still healing 🖤🐦‍⬛ whatchu got?!
