Local Cork city council engineers/planners

Post image
55 Upvotes

Hi

Does anyone know an engineer or planner in cork city council?
Does anyone know what kind of qualifications they have? Perhaps none.

I remember reading about new junctions in ballyolane that are too tight, footpaths too wide for buses to pass on the road!!

See below an example from recent Lehenaghmore roadworks, a new junction a lot worse than the old previous junction - cars can’t use it properly, traffic a way worse!

trucks cannot used it all! A few got stuck last week!
Millions spent to make the whole situation worse!
What a fiasco!

Who is in charge of these plans!?
Do they have qualifications anyone know!

**Edit - it’s in Barrett’s cross Lehenaghmore

Kindale Road Rounabout (sorry!)

Yea yes, another one of these, apologies!

Lads, quick one please, when in the left lane here as shown coming from Kinsale Road what options do you legally have?

I always understood you could exit to left and into the city on the City Link Road or also take the left (only) exit eastwards in direction of Tunnel?

The level of aggression from my fellow road sharer this evening has me 2nd guessing myself

Thanks!

Lack of benches in covered areas in Cork City!

I have noticed a total lack of benches in covered areas in the city, no benches at main bus stops, no benches in shopping centers (like Corn Market).

In a country where it rains a lot it makes no sense.

I traveled to Germany, UK, Spain, Italy etc and they have them even if in some places it does not rain much!

Homelessness is not so bad to be an excuse for not putting any benches in covered places.

Appalling Litter in Cork City - Strike

I’m guessing the reason the litter in the city centre is so bad today is a result of industrial action and therefore no street cleaners this morning?

The litter on Washington Street is absolutely disgraceful, (takeout boxes, cans & glass bottles) and that’s after just one morning without the street cleaners… There was wind blowing litter directly into my face there was so much of it on the ground. Tourists must be disgusted, it’s an awful impression of the city.

I’m shocked that so many people think it’s acceptable to litter. Even at my drunkest it wouldn’t cross my mind to leave rubbish on the ground, it would come home with me in the bus or taxi if the bins were full.

I’d love if we had litter wardens working evening/night shifts handing out fines to the culprits. I’d be in favour of the wardens getting commission on the fines they issue to incentivise a crack down on littering (I feel the same about people who don’t pick up after their dog foul).Ā

Roadworks & reinstatement of same roads.

I’ve noticed when company’s representative of Irish water carry out works they leave a trail of destruction behind. For example, Pearse Road through Ballyphehane, resurfaced to a high finish in the last few years only for ward & burke to come and absolutely ruin the footpaths & roads.

Is there any course of action that can be taken to ensure these places are left in the same or better condition than they found it?

No doubt the exact same thing is about to happen around college road with the works that have been ongoing.

Not isolated to ward & burke or Irish water either. You see the same with the likes of contractors on behalf of esb etc. really infuriating!

Douglas - dog left alone to poop all along the pavement/walkway

Post image
12 Upvotes

S. Douglas Rd- There is a white and black dog that is alone often without owner pooping all along the pavement. It’s everyday. Anyone know where this dog lives or who he belongs to? Clearly they need to be picking up after it šŸ’©šŸ’©šŸ’©šŸ’©. It’s a very shitty situation to have to walk and try avoid stepping piles of poop. Saw the dog again doing its business and no owner around. Map for šŸ’©covered footpath.

Cork City Subsidence cover Ballinlough/Ballintmeple

We are sale agreed on a property in Ballinlough, a week or two away from drawing down. I knew we were unlikely to get subsidence cover but I assumed banks would accept this, because like how does anyone buy in these high risk areas otherwise?!
I was thinking at worst we could pay an extremely high price for a policy now that includes subsidence cover (we have managed to get one company that will include it but it costs €3000 per year), and that we could remove the subsidence cover next year. We are approved with Avant and I have been digging into their policies and it looks like subsidence cover is a necessity and we’ll be violating terms if we drop it in the future.
Up to 90 now. How does anyone get around this?!

Debenhams Cork - Any News on Reopening?

Any updates on the Debenhams building in Cork? Does anyone know if it’s still on track to reopen and when? I’ve checked here, but the last post was from a year ago, so I haven’t been able to find any recent updates.

Already posted this in the ucc thread . But any suggestions on who to report this to? Also if ur asking how do I know they’re in ucc - it doesn’t take long looking at their account to find their names and where they’re from 😃

Just thought some awareness to this would be great . Thought students would have a bit more cop on.

Just wondering if anyone had recommendations for faux wedding flowers. We will have real flowers for the bouquet and celebration table, but would love to add in some faux flowers to reduce waste. Thank you!

Cork City How are Cork City libraries?

Moved back to cork after years away. I never used the public libraries here before (lived here as a student and had access to the Boole). So, how are they? In terms of range of books, online access, noise? Are there specific branches you would recommend?

Food and Drink Any fast food shops here that sell potato scallops?

I used to live in newbridge and there was a fast food shop called central grill that had them, man they’re so good but I didn’t realise how hard they were to find all over Ireland, I’ve moved around quite a bit and the only place that’s had them was in Dublin, I feel like they should be way more popular

Housing Crisis Protest

I'm an electrician working full-time, I'm in my late twenties and the prospect of owning my own home feels completely out of reach.

I've been thinking about organising a peaceful protest in Cork city centre, where we'd pitch tents and create a temporary shanty town to highlight the future facing young people in Ireland.

Rather than another march that lasts an afternoon, the idea would be to maintain a visible presence, with people contributing whatever time they can around work and other commitments.

I'm not affiliated with any political party or organisation. I'm just looking to gauge whether there's genuine interest in getting something like this off the ground.

Hobbies Musicians in cork

Hi there! I'm a beginner jazz/blues guitarist looking for a bassist or drummer or any instrument for that matter to jam out with and loop simple standards in a more casual setting and get the practice hours in. Does anyone know where would be a good place to look?

Cork residents and business owners, what's your thought on the North Main Street neighborhood and its future?

Hi,

I am an architect and student at UCC currently working on urban regeneration of north main street, cork.

I'm interested in understanding the area from the perspective of people who actually live there, work there, or regularly spend time there. I want to understand the everyday experience of the people who make the area what it is.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on a few questions:

  1. What do you appreciate most about North Main Street?
  2. Are there issues with vacant and underused buildings/spaces, safety, accessibility, maintenance, or availability of service and amenities?
  3. If you could improve things about the area, what would it be?
  4. What should be preserved? Buildings, public spaces, landmarks, or any special characters of the site that you think are important?
  5. What concerns would you have about regeneration? For example, rising rent, displacement, and loss of heritage/identity?
  6. What opportunities do you see?

I'd love to hear back from local residents, business owners, and people who have known them for a long time. Thanks!

JJ O’Driscoll’s

Any suggestions for places similar to JJ’s??

I appreciate that it’s a family run business but the prices are through the roof and I’ve been in there multiple times and witnessed managers, or owners (not sure) yell and abuse their staff. Which, I’m assuming, are minimum wage workers. Despite needing to take out a loan for a half decent lunch. Extremely humiliating for myself and the employee to have it happen.

Any other Family run business’ or shops that are similar in Cork that I can take my money instead ??
