Appalling Litter in Cork City - Strike

I’m guessing the reason the litter in the city centre is so bad today is a result of industrial action and therefore no street cleaners this morning?

The litter on Washington Street is absolutely disgraceful, (takeout boxes, cans & glass bottles) and that’s after just one morning without the street cleaners… There was wind blowing litter directly into my face there was so much of it on the ground. Tourists must be disgusted, it’s an awful impression of the city.

I’m shocked that so many people think it’s acceptable to litter. Even at my drunkest it wouldn’t cross my mind to leave rubbish on the ground, it would come home with me in the bus or taxi if the bins were full.

I’d love if we had litter wardens working evening/night shifts handing out fines to the culprits. I’d be in favour of the wardens getting commission on the fines they issue to incentivise a crack down on littering (I feel the same about people who don’t pick up after their dog foul).Ā

Lack of benches in covered areas in Cork City!

I have noticed a total lack of benches in covered areas in the city, no benches at main bus stops, no benches in shopping centers (like Corn Market).

In a country where it rains a lot it makes no sense.

I traveled to Germany, UK, Spain, Italy etc and they have them even if in some places it does not rain much!

Homelessness is not so bad to be an excuse for not putting any benches in covered places.

Bus City Bus Drivers!!

• Upvotes

Don’t mean to rant but today I saw a 205 bus driver very aggressively kick a young student off the bus today near Mercy Hospital and I feel like it was very wrong

The young man’s phone had obviously malfunctioned due to the heavy rain and he was only drying it off while his ticket loaded on his phone.

The bus driver literally started to open his door and was screaming at him to get out in front of the other passengers I can’t imagine how embarrassed he was to have to get back in that rain…

The registration was VWD447 - 191-D-42568 does anybody know who or where I can report this to??

Already posted this in the ucc thread . But any suggestions on who to report this to? Also if ur asking how do I know they’re in ucc - it doesn’t take long looking at their account to find their names and where they’re from 😃

Just thought some awareness to this would be great . Thought students would have a bit more cop on.

Debenhams Cork - Any News on Reopening?

Any updates on the Debenhams building in Cork? Does anyone know if it’s still on track to reopen and when? I’ve checked here, but the last post was from a year ago, so I haven’t been able to find any recent updates.

Teachers and SNA’s exercising the right to suspend work and strike. I’m so sad for Cork, apparently they weren’t the only primary school targeted .

Housing Crisis Protest

I'm an electrician working full-time, I'm in my late twenties and the prospect of owning my own home feels completely out of reach.

I've been thinking about organising a peaceful protest in Cork city centre, where we'd pitch tents and create a temporary shanty town to highlight the future facing young people in Ireland.

Rather than another march that lasts an afternoon, the idea would be to maintain a visible presence, with people contributing whatever time they can around work and other commitments.

I'm not affiliated with any political party or organisation. I'm just looking to gauge whether there's genuine interest in getting something like this off the ground.

Ground floor renovation recommendations

• Upvotes

Hi, I'm looking to renovate my ground floor. New floors, new kitchen and changing the banister on the stairs. I think the kitchen might be a big job as I want to change where it's currently plumbed (the previous owner built an extension but kept the original kitchen so it's all a bit weird and a waste of space.

I just don't know where to start. Do I get a builder or do I just go to a kitchen place and a floor place and then try to find a carpenter/joiner? It's my first time doing anything like this so I'm just a bit lost.

I would like to understand a bit more abt the strike

• Upvotes

hi everyone, i see what is going on around the city and first of all, all my support for everyone involved.
second, i don’t really understand how stiles work here in ireland in general if its a constitutional right or not, what are the consequences?
and for this specific one, what are they claiming?
i am really curious to understand so i can really support in the right way, bc i don’t know it’s really different from where i came from.
i have done some research, but some websites have conflitante information and i just don’t know what i can trust

Cork residents and business owners, what's your thought on the North Main Street neighborhood and its future?

Hi,

I am an architect and student at UCC currently working on urban regeneration of north main street, cork.

I'm interested in understanding the area from the perspective of people who actually live there, work there, or regularly spend time there. I want to understand the everyday experience of the people who make the area what it is.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on a few questions:

  1. What do you appreciate most about North Main Street?
  2. Are there issues with vacant and underused buildings/spaces, safety, accessibility, maintenance, or availability of service and amenities?
  3. If you could improve things about the area, what would it be?
  4. What should be preserved? Buildings, public spaces, landmarks, or any special characters of the site that you think are important?
  5. What concerns would you have about regeneration? For example, rising rent, displacement, and loss of heritage/identity?
  6. What opportunities do you see?

I'd love to hear back from local residents, business owners, and people who have known them for a long time. Thanks!

Hobbies Musicians in cork

Hi there! I'm a beginner jazz/blues guitarist looking for a bassist or drummer or any instrument for that matter to jam out with and loop simple standards in a more casual setting and get the practice hours in. Does anyone know where would be a good place to look?

Driving to cork airport compared to Dublin

So I refuse to drive to Dublin as it terrified me with all the different lanes and i want to plan holidays for my kids which would make life easier if I can drive as opposed to getting public transport

What is it like getting from the motorway on to that massive scary roundabout and over to the airport

Bus I think I just had the worst possible day of transport

Some my fault some not my fault but Jesus I don’t think today could have gone worse. Not a particularly interesting story but feel the need to vent into a void.

In Dublin for work today so I book the 7am train. I have been burnt before by Kent station parking so I get the bus when I can. Two buses scheduled would get me there in time for the train so I go to sleep happy that at least one of them would run... right?

I wake up on a snoozed alarm (I presume I hit my watch in my half-sleep state…my fault) so I’m 9mins behind. Tight to make bus one but plenty of time for bus two. Check the app.. bus two cancelled. Silver lining? Bus one is delayed. Quickly get ready. Check the app.. bus one is now cancelled but magically bus two is now back in service… but delayed. It’s 14 minutes away… 8 minutes later and the bus is still 14 minutes away.

I weigh up my lack of faith in the bus system against my lack of faith in Kent station parking and decide the latter is the lesser of two evils. After circling both upper and lower car parking areas (TWICE) I tuck it against the fence which reads ā€œNO PARKING. CLAMPING IN OPERATIONā€ and pray to God the APCOA Gods take mercy on my soul. 6 minutes to the train. I’m now running through Kent station close to tears for the second time in my life and explaining my parking situation to some poor staff member who likely has no authority over the whole situation but his calm ā€œEra be grandā€ gave me the peace of mind to get onto the train.

All is well, train pulls up a couple of minutes behind but no worries I have accounted for this. I had a back up bus to get me to the conference on time just in case the train ran late… what I DIDN’T account for was the back up bus TO BE CANCELLED. I’m ringing my boss explaining I’m going to be late to a conference we are hosting. Now she is a lovely understanding lady but this only makes me feel worse as she now has to do the work of two people until I arrive.

Luckily the day goes off great after that and we joke that I was getting all the bad luck out before the big event. Getting back to the train station goes smoothly, plenty of time before my train home. Get on the train, all fine. I relax and completely forget about the antics of the morning (maybe too much..) Get back to the train station and suddenly my luck has changed as the bus home pulls up right on time as I leave the station!

I enter the house and (this is where you may have already spotted my error) I realise… I’m home... My car isn’t. It’s a laugh or cry situation but I choose both. Now could I have left it there overnight? Maybe. But remember it’s parked precariously and APCOA is on that aforementioned list of evils so I’m not taking that chance.

So I treat myself to a taxi back to the train station. Taxi man explains there was traffic on his way in so he is going to try a different route. ā€œYou know bestā€ I say. We go the unconventional way… only to find the car crash that had caused all the traffic. So we turn around and accept our faith of sitting in 10+ minutes of traffic. Taxi man could not have been nicer and genuinely made the whole situation lighter as we had plenty of time to chat. We finally get to the station after discussing all eventualities of whether I was clamped or not. For the sake of the story it would be funny if I got clamped but thankfully I found my car fully in tact but now sticking out like a sore thumb as all the other chancers had removed their dodgily parked cars.

Days like today make me thankful I work from home 99.999% of the time.

Would there be anyone in Cork that would be able to repair the zip on Steel Blue work boots? I tried Mr Cobbler in Douglas shopping centre and unfortunately they don't repair them.
