I really need to compare American dark chocolate brands to European dark chocolate brands one of these days. I know milk chocolate is noticeable different, but I haven't had the time to test if dark chocolates have noticeable differences.

American chocolate is up there with every other countries chocolate. Hershey's is just one specific brand that maintained a unique flavor from when it was first developed.

The original Hershey’s owner was a freak who wanted to have his chocolate be unique, so he liked the taste spoilt milk gave the chocolate
