Question | Advice-Needed My fiancée has fallen in love with Cape Town and we want to elope here… but we only have until Monday! ❤️ Any ideas?

I’m hoping the wonderful people of Cape Town might be able to help us with something a little spontaneous!

I brought my fiancée out to Cape Town from the UK, and she has genuinely fallen in love with this place. Honestly, it’s become her favourite city in the world, and we’ve been talking about how incredible it would be to elope here and make this trip even more special. There’s just one slight problem… we leave on Monday!

We’re now wondering whether there’s any way we could actually make this happen before we go. We’re not looking for a big wedding, an elaborate setup or anything remotely traditional. It would literally just be the two of us, somewhere beautiful, having a little ceremony, taking some photos and sharing a moment we’ll remember for the rest of our lives.

We’re incredibly easygoing and chilled people. We’re happy to be flexible, we don’t need anything extravagant, and we’d be open to pretty much any idea or help that could make this possible. A beautiful garden, a wine farm, a secluded beach, a mountain backdrop, a lovely little venue, a photographer, a small business… honestly, we’re all ears!

I thought Reddit might be the perfect place to ask because you guys have been so helpful and often know about incredible places, talented people and possibilities you’d never find through Google. So, I’d love to hear from anyone who might have ideas!

Are there any celebrants, photographers, planners or venues who might be able to help?

Do you know of any beautiful places that would be happy to accommodate something this small at short notice?

I know a legally recognised marriage might not be possible in the time we have so if we can arrange a symbolic ceremony instead and make it just as special that’d be fine, we can tick the boxes back home.

We know this is ridiculously last-minute, but sometimes the best things happen when you just put the idea out into the world and see what happens.

Cape Town has given us so many incredible memories already. If we could leave with this one too, it would honestly mean the world to us.

Thank you in advance so much for any suggestions, contacts, ideas or advice. Even if you think it’s a long shot, please throw it out there! ❤️

General Discussion UCT and avoiding international research

I’m going to preface by saying that I’ve always been a very progressive person politically. My experience at UCT so far has been mixed. I’ve enjoyed the people and atmosphere, but I can’t help but feel that my education is being limited by the university’s way of teaching.

I’ve noticed that there has been an extreme and constant discussion surrounding ‘decolonizing the curriculum’ in all my courses. While I certainly agree with the premise, I find myself being retaught the same concept over and over every week. The biggest issue that I have with this is that I seem to find my courses actively avoid discussing anything that isn’t South African research. While I understand that Western media has a negative relationship with our country’s foundation, I can’t help but feel that the constant shunning and avoidance of anything labeled Western is detrimental to my education and knowledge. I might be overreacting a bit, but I do like the rest of the world has made extremely significant contributions to knowledge, and I feel it’s irresponsible to neglect that simply because we are a country with a colonial history.

Is it like this at every South African uni? I hope what I have said makes sense.

I’ve been in CPT for a while and I’m getting bored of going to the same 3 places….

What’s a true hidden gem you feel like few people know about? (Extra appreciation if it’s ideal for an introvert)

Thanks for your help!

Edit: Guys I’m from Cape Town I grew up in Durbanville and moved and came back😭💀 I’m pretty confused now🫣 where are we sharing info so it doesn’t get out to tourists🫠 coz I can’t think of a better way to get this info

Question | Advice-Needed Rugby/cricket/live sports

Hi everyone, I’m visiting Cape Town all of next week and would love to catch some live sports while I’m in town. Some limited googling seems to imply I’m out of luck, but wanted to check here to see if anyone has good resources to look for options. Thanks!

Looking For... Retirement Village / Home Rentals

Does anyone know of a retirement village that offers rentals without requiring a certain income from the actual residents? I am looking for a rental unit in a retirement home / village where I can pay for the rental. I currently pay for a flat for them, but they are getting older and already need assistance (trips to the shops, check ins with a nurse, cleaning etc) I live in Johannesburg so it's hard for me to look after them. If I can get them into a place where I can just pay for the rental and know that they're taken care of that would be amazing. My budget is 8-10k pm. They have pension which covers food etc.

Looking For... Looking for vocalists in Cape Town 🎤🎶

Hey everyone! I'm a music producer based in Cape Town looking to connect with male and female vocalists who enjoy making music as a hobby.

I have the beats and recording equipment, and I'd love to collaborate with people who want to record songs, experiment with different sounds, and have fun making music together. No professional experience needed!

I'm into R&B, GQOM, and indie/acoustic music, but I'm open to exploring different genres.

If you're someone who loves singing but doesn't have the equipment or resources to record your own music, feel free to DM me! Let's make something cool. 🙌🏽

Vent / Complaint Just a vent

I'm coloured "bra" from the Garden Route, in Cape Town since 2009.

I'm honestly so tired of all the politicing in not just the Western Cape, but South Africa as a whole.

This rhetoric of "I don't have job because of x from the Eastern Cape" or "y from Zimbabwe" is becoming unbearable.

I'm tired of being labelled as a "traitor" simply because I have different beliefs, different values or different ideologies.

Why does everything in this country always have to come down to race? Honestly, the fuck?

YOU decided not to go to school.

YOU decided to not invest in your future and simply live for today.

YOU decided to smoke weed, do drugs or drink till you pass out.

I'm honestly fucking naar of it all.

If this isn't allowed here, I apologize, but fuck man.

Kom reg.

Question | Advice-Needed Experiences of living in Ottery?

People who have lived in or currently live in Ottery, specifically the area just off Ottery road, above Plantation road and below De Wet Road. Is it safe? Traffic in and out for work? Shopping centers nearby? Not familiar with the different areas of CT but seeing beautiful houses for rental in Ottery.

Question | Advice-Needed Anyone maybe know if jazz train is ever happening again?

Hi guys.

I really like live music, especially jazz.

Someone told me about jazz train at the start of this year and I've been following their IG account since then and occasionally did google searches to check out if they're having another jazz train again.

Even tried getting into contact and didn't get a reply.

I saw they collaborated with the Simon's town festival thing but that's it, not the actual jazz train thing.

Does anyone maybe have information on if the folks that organize it are interested in ever doing that again? Year's almost over so I doubt that they will, but I live in hope.

Looking For... An affordable and reliable gym

Hi, I need some suggestions and advice on finding a good gym in CPT. All I need is a rowing machine and a shower💁‍♀️

This is my first time getting a membership myself so I really need advice on how to make the right choice and what to avoid.

They make the place seem great on the tour but then I go online and find someone who has been fighting to cancel (unsuccessfully) for 15 years😂

I would really appreciate your suggestions and advice! ❤️

Looking For... Drum/Piano teacher that does home visits, and can work with autistic kids?

I live in the northern suburbs, specifically Durbanville.

I am a lvl 2 autistic kid. I'm 17, but i have been playing piano since i was around 7-8, and I haven't touched my keyboard in the last 5 years. I started playing the drums, but i only had a year of lessons. I had to stop both because of medical reasons.

I do online schooling, so it can be any day, any time. I'm not allowed to drive, and im way more comfortable at home, so i would prefer home visits. Preferably a woman, but im fine with a man.

They dont need to be educated, but just understanding and willing to learn.

So does anybody know someone who teaches piano and drums (fine if just one) that is able to do home visits and is willing to work with autistic children?
