Cambridge Events Saturday 17th October Repair Café at the Grafton Centre

• Upvotes

Again didn't that happen a fortnight ago? You ask...

Well yes it seems that the repair café team are so keen to fix things and do their bit to prevent more "stuff" heading to landfill that they're doing TWO sessions a month, on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month.

Its the usual drill: 9am to 12 noon in the Cambridge Room opposite Decathlon.

I thought people might find this interesting.
https://www.ecops.org.uk/Alerts/A/510187

Almost £700,000 worth of stolen property was recovered by Cambridgeshire's Rural Crime Action Team (RCAT) between April and September this year, helping return valuable assets to victims and disrupt criminal activity across the region.

Cambridge Question Man shouting every night in trumpington

Genuine question, does anyone else hear the man shouting and screaming obscenities within trumpington every second night? Not sure as if anyone has reported it or checked on his welfare, although I have no idea where exactly he is located.

Local services Mill Road Bridge Review

Reminder: Mill Road Bus Gate Review!

The County Council are carrying out a review of the effects of the Mill Road Bridge bus gate.

I know alot of us live locally and use Mill Road lots.

They do want to hear the views of all stakeholders so it does matter - so please email them at pm.delivery@cambridgeshire.gov.uk with your views.

I know this is a contentious local issue so please do give your own story….. hopefully of safer journeys, cleaner air, nicer pavement / socialising / cafe experiences, shopping locally and especially better cycling.

It will only take 2 mins!

Visiting Cambridge Decent casual places for a drink Saturday night

Hi folks

Meeting someone for a date on Saturday evening in Cambridge, neither of us are local to Cambridge but it is out halfway point.

I’m looking for recommendations for decent pub/bar/wine bar with a low key chilled atmosphere we can go for a drink or two. We are both early 30’s so nothing full of students please!

City centre preferably as think we were planning to park at the Grand Arcade - is this the best place to park?

For reference I studied at ARU so am a little familiar with the city but it was 10 years ago!

Thanks very much!

Cambridge Question Places to sit a professional exam

I have a professional qualification to sit - remote invigilation (can take it at any time), 1 hour, room scan with webcam at the start. I sat a previous exam for this qualification at the central library in one of the pods and this was a nightmare (love the library but those things have no soundproofing and the WiFi is incredibly unreliable, I was convinced I would have to resit due to all the noise from people sitting nearby) so I'm looking for somewhere else. Due to the qualification I am unable to sit it at the Pearson Centre. Sitting it at home would be very difficult as I am preparing for a move and thus I don't really have a space that would be appropriate.

What are my options locally in terms of finding a space where I could sit the exam without paying through the roof?

Local services Voi parking near Cambridge South station

I can’t see a designated Voi parking spot near Cambridge South Station on their app. Can you just leave the bike/scooter there, or will the app prevent you from doing so?

Cambridge Question Any science communicators, student creators, or documentary filmmakers in Cambridge up for collaborating?

Hi everyone,

I’m an international master’s student in neuroscience based here in Cambridge, deeply inspired by communicators like Carl Sagan, Brian Cox, and David Attenborough. My core passion is making science, wildlife, arts, and philosophy accessible through engaging visual storytelling and discussions.

I’ve already published two full length video discussions with scientific field experts as well as short educational pieces on my own, but working completely solo on location has its limits. I strongly believe that collaborating with the right people makes the work much better.

I’d love to connect with like minded people locally:

  • Sci-Comm creators (or anyone thinking of starting):** Whether you’re already making content or just have an idea you want to get off the ground, I’d love to team up, share ideas, and co-create.
  • Film/media students & societies: If you’re working on university projects, factual shorts, or podcasts and need an enthusiastic on camera presenter, researcher, or an extra hand, I’m very happy to help out voluntarily.
  • Fellow science/arts minds: Anyone who simply wants to grab a coffee in town and talk about science, nature, and creative ways to communicate ideas.

If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, feel free to drop a comment or send me a message!

Local services Why do train drivers change at Cambridge?

Usual rant about the horrific train service between Kings Lynn and London Kings Cross... One of the (albeit extremely numerous excuses) for train delays and cancellations past Cambridge is that they can't find the driver.

Does anyone know why on earth they do a train driver change in Cambridge? The whole service Kings Lynn to London takes (or should I say supposed to take) less than 2 hours. Is that seriously beyond the ability of the train driver?

Grumbles/rants Undercover police for women who run

Okay, it’s become increasingly clear (not as if it was not clear before) , that Cambridge has a problem with harassment and abusive behaviour towards women, especially when out and about cycling and running.

I myself had an encounter over weekend by the river cam with verbal harassment (very enraged shouting sexist and hateful remarks at me) while with my boyfriend out for a run. It shook me up because he had such a sheer rage directed at me, not the usual snide or sexist remark. What makes it worse is I usually don’t run with my boyfriend. It was a busy Saturday morning and people were around and now I am just thinking of those quieter morning or evenings when I decide to run alone and whether I should.

I have seen a few posts from same day about this (probably) same boy in a bike, even extending to physical assault to a girl’s partner. It’s not limited to that day though and there seems to be increasingly more incidents posted every month about different encounters with different boys/men.

Now I’m beginning to think, what are the police doing about it. These boys/men often cover their face and are on a bike /electric bike, so hard to catch and also it’s a risk to intervene as for the incident on Saturday - the boy was scarily enraged with that rage directed at women and anyone who challenged him. Girlsthatjog are doing amazing job at providing a safer way for girls to run combatting this but the problem does not lie with them, it lies with catching and reprimanding these people.

Why don’t we see more police in Cambridge/ river cam. Why don’t we see undercover police on bikes attempting to catch these people (I know you shouldn’t be able to see em but it seemed that the boy on Saturday was out harassing and assaulting people up and down the cam for a good while with no intervention) What is actually being done apart from girls deciding to change their routes and run in groups.

I’ve lived in multiple places in Ireland and the uk (some of the highest crime rates too), and never have I had so much verbal harassment as I have had in Cambridge city and river. Something needs to change.

Local services Parking train station

Hey there, it's my first time parking at the station and I'm a bit clueless. Is it literally just that parking area that's where the little roundabout is? And can I just use that Pay by phone app to pay for my parking there? And finally do I pay before I get in or after I leave?

Sorry I'm new to driving and a bit clueless with these things. Thanks so much!

Other Cromwell Road/Coldham's lane incident Thursday 8th october just before 8pm

Under the shock of the moment I didn't think to get the contact details of the other people who were there (3 cyclists crossing to the traffic island, talked briefly to 2 of them, young women) and 1 car coming from south-east Coldham's lane that had to break to avoid the car turning left out of Cromwell Rd. It is a long shot, but if you recognise what I am talking about, if you are one of the people who were there, please feel free to contact me. Otherwise we can't report it.

Cambridge Events What's on in Cambridge this week: brunches, a quiz night and live jazz

A few low key things on this week if you're looking for an excuse to get out.

Ronans Cafe has a Hitchin Brunch on, nice relaxed option if you want food without the faff. There's also a Cambridge Brunch at Four the next day, so brunch is well covered either way.

Fancy testing your general knowledge, The Mill is running its usual Quiz Night, always a good laugh even if you're rubbish at it.

For something more low key in the evening, the Flying Hammond Trio are playing live jazz at The Geldart, worth a look if that's your sort of thing.

There's also a Dr. Martens student discount running at the Grand Arcade store if you're after new boots before the weather turns properly cold.

Local services Door replacement/garden gate

I have been told by a locksmith that my very old wooden front door needs replacing in the next six months or so as it is on its last legs, and I'm keen to get it sorted as I'm worried about my home insurance claiming I had not done everything I could to keep the home secure.

I have 2 front doors, and am looking to get them both replaced as both ageing and could do with a thicker more insulated door anyway. Does anyone know anyone trustworthy in cambridge who could do this including installation and planing to a non-perfect frame? Would be looking at old-style doors as I have a Georgian-era home so would want it to be in keeping.

Thank you so much!
