The Tragedy(?) of Gary Smith Spoiler
I don't think it's any secret that Gary (while a decent Antagonist) definitely could've been utilized better throughout the game, but despite that I still think he's a pretty decent character in his own right, and there's a like in particular from specific conversation he says during the final battle that made me want to discuss it:
Jimmy: "But I never did anything to you"
Gary: "You would've, if I'd given you the chance"
Now I don't think this line makes Gary sympathetic or excuses his behavior, it is made very clear that Gary enjoys hurting people, but I do genuinely believe he has mental problems and needs help. This line also perfectly exemplifies the problems of Bullworth Academy and what the place does to people. Bullworth seems to bring out the worst in a lot of people due to the fact that they are rewarded for it most of the time and a lot of the teachers either participate (like the Gym Teacher) or just turn a blind eye to it intentionally or otherwise (like Crabblesnitch) and the people it doesn't poison like Pete, only suffer from the crossfire, with the sole exception being Jimmy who despite claiming otherwise ends up rising above the poisoning of Bullworth and becoming a better person for it.
Part of the issue is that we just don't know enough about Gary and how he was his entire life so it leads us to wonder whether he was always like this, or if Bullworth only fed his pyschopathic tendencies and end up allowing him to be as demented as he is. The game kind of leans on both sides, and the line "You would've, if I'd given you the chance" alludes to the possibility that he has become unable to genuinely trust anyone
Anyway what do y'all think about Gary as a whole? I really wanna hear some interesting thoughts about this

Is there anyone else who imagined the Hogwarts campus as Bullworth when they read Harry Potter as a kid?
I just thought of this. I first played Bully on the Wii when I was 7 and then first read a Harry Potter book when I was 8 or 9. When I read them I imagined Hogwarts to look like Bullworth

Do you think Russell deserves a girlfriend? If yes, who should it be?
galleryFor me, I think Eunice might be a fitting choice for Russell. Don't know why, their vibes seem fitting.

Bully is a weirdly good guide on individualism and (counterintuitively) universality.
I don't know whether that was intentional or not, but it kind-of is.
Each of the game's chapters represents a different sphere of influence or obsession which can, if not navigated correctly, make an individual conceited or trapped. A different subcultural mechanism of defining value and establishing an in-group and an out-group to help form identity.
Together, these form a picture of an arbitrarily divided populace, with Gary being a human manifestation of the desire to divide and define people overall, and with the game's story being about staying individual to combat and dismantle that. Jimmy rejects the idea that the students of Bullworth Academy are actually different, and eventually unites them all against their common enemy - division itself.
Chapter 1 is about the purest form of an in-group possible, which is simply based upon familiarity. The bullies don't really have any enemies, but they do stick together as a group because they know each other. This makes them a very good and self-contained vehicle for an introduction to the game's narrative, and Jimmy beats this group simply through familiarity. He might physically beat Russell in a fight, but Russell doesn't even care about that - he only cares about the idea that Jimmy might have insulted his mom. By the time that Russell finds out that this isn't true, he has grown more familiar with Jimmy and accepts him.
The lesson of Chapter 1 is that division, and forming groups, is an innate part of human behaviour that requires literally nothing else to exist other than pure familiarity between people.
Chapter 2 is where it gets more complex, with the Preps instead basing their in-group on another factor that can define and trap people - materialism. They define themselves through opulence and fashion, and view themselves as better than others because they have access to it. Jimmy beats this group by becoming their boxing champion regardless of his lack of opulence, showing their obsession with it to be meaningless and functionless junk. He is societally disadvantaged in their view, and still wins. In doing so, Jimmy does actually gain some wealth by winning the beach house and, essentially, controlling the boxing gym, and wins the appreciation of most of the Preps.
The lesson of Chapter 2 is that materialism is a form of arbitrary division that doesn't represent someone's actual value, and that becoming obsessed with it will leave you lacking any actual substance.
Chapter 3 is the antithesis of Chapter 2. Instead of being obsessed with material possession, it's about being obsessed with emotional possession. Johhny has constructed a cult-of-personality around himself, but is himself infatuated with Lola and can't view himself as respectable or valuable without her. They view themselves as being entirely different to the rich Preps, but they're focus on fashion and competitive sport (bike races) is just just the same as them. Only, the Greasers define themselves as being the romantic underdogs. Johnny is obsessed with maintaining his image (just as the Preps are), but his need to emotionally possess Lola leaves him stuck. Jimmy defeats the Greasers not by beating Johnny himself, but by beating Lola. By the end of the chapter, Jimmy has tired of her and recognises her as a negative influence upon everybody. Jimmy's ability to value himself beyond women is what, ultimately, impresses Johnny.
The lesson of Chapter 3 is that romantic obsession does make the world go around - but it can also make your world stop or leave you shallow.
Chapter 4 is essentially two chapters, but in one. The Nerds define themselves through academic intelligence and value people primarily through that lens, whereas the Jocks define themselves through physiological prowess and value people through that lens. Importantly, both are examples of anatomical skill - one group trains their nervous system, while the other train their musculoskeletal system. They define themselves as opposites and don't realise that, ultimately, they're two sides of the same coin. They both play games, but one is focussed on mental roleplay (Grottos and Gremlins), while the other is focussed on kinetic movement. Jimmy beats the Nerds by showing that you can't rely on intelligence to beat raw power (defeating their engineered defences), and then beats the Jocks by showing that you can't rely on raw power to beat intelligence (sabotaging the game with an elaborate plan).
The lesson of Chapter 4 is that a balance of intelligence and strength is better than becoming conceitedly one-sided.
Chapter 5 is about the anti-establishment itself, and defining yourself purely through the lens of being an opposition to order. Basically, anarchy. The Townies define themselves through being a disruption to the established order of Bullworth and Bullworth Academy, and view themselves as better because of it. Jimmy beats the Townies not by beating Edgar, but by exposing Edgar's hatred of Bullworth to be meaningless and, ultimately, something that only serves someone else's designs upon control (Gary). Jimmy beats the anti-establishment not through force, but through evidencing the value of the establishment as a defence against even worse things.
The game's narrative is fundamentally about how everyone is the same, albeit expressed differently and constantly being affected by the same innate drive to form in-groups and out-groups. Jimmy defeats these groups, and returns the school to a better state of unity, by defeating the aspects that they use to try and differentiate themselves from others. He surpasses unfimilairity with the Bullies, material possession with the Preps, hopeless romanticism with the Greasers, stupidity with the Nerds, strength with the Jocks, and aimless destruction with the Townies.
The game can even be sorted into 3 repeating plot conflicts:
Establishment Dysfunction Vs Anti-establishment Dysfunction (Bullies Vs Townies). The Bullies are dysfunctional, but in a way that is accepted by the establishment. Their behaviour is seen as a normal part of the established order, and they are still a part of it (still Bullworth students). The Townies are dysfunctional, but in a way that challenges the established order and is seen as abnormal - something to be stopped.
Materialism Vs Human Connection (Preps Vs Greasers). Told through a rich Vs poor dichotomy. They view themselves as entirely different, but they both are heavily focussed on fashion and on a compeitive sport (boxing Vs bike racing). One defines themselves as the elite, while the other defines themselves as the underdog. One is obsessed with the material and connotations of class, while the other is obsessed with romanticism.
Mental Capacity Vs Kinetic Capacity (Nerds Vs Jocks). They view themselves as entirely different, when they are actually different expressions of anatomical skills. They both have games that they love, but are stuck in viewing the other as their enemy.
The fundamental lesson of the game, I guess, is that balance is important. Don't define yourself so rigourously through a single metric, or you might end up like Johnny or Edgar. And, one day, maybe you'll encounter your very own Jimmy.
And he only gives people what they have coming to them...

Favorite Clique?
For me, it will always be the Bullies. They stayed loyal to Jimmy even after Gary got the other cliques to go against him.
The Townies are a close second.

TRUE FPS Patch v1.1.0 (Now play at 60/90/120fps on PC!)
nexusmods.comSince this is a major feature, which is a significant step forward for our community (if I say so myself), I want to let you know that I’ve just released an update to formerly: JBs TRUE 60FPS Patch in which is now a JBS TRUE FPS Patch! Play Bully at 60, 90 or 120fps without speed up and mission bugs. No 30fps trickery or gimmicks here, a native high FPS experience!
90 and 120fps are still experimental as they’ve had less testing than 60fps but I felt this was stable enough to release and for people to enjoy!

I was watching the outsiders and immediately thought of bully
If you’ve never watched The Outsiders, there’s a scene where greasers and preps rumble. Just like the mission rumble on Christmas.

trying to find a fan art/artist
So there was this fanart I found on Twitter the other day from the mission "The Diary". It was one image with two panels. In the top panel, Beatrice was thanking Jimmy, and in the bottom one, Jimmy was all beaten up,it was fully colored and i think semi realistic.Has anyone else seen this fanart?

I'm thinking of writing a comic adaptation of Bully and would like some creative input
I've been working on some cool things for series I that don't get much content (including Infamous, Sly Cooper and what not) and I recently got back into this series, and decided I might want to do a comic adaptation of the original Bully story that includes a revisioned story with a slightly more adult tone (not that the original version was close to being adult as it stands) all of the cut content ideas and stuff like that
With all that in mind I could really use some input for how I should do this (if and when I get to it) and I'd love to get some input and how y'all would like me to do it if I did, what kind of art style should I use, improvements on any specific characters, stuff like that

Celebrating 20 Years of Bully (3:21:27)
youtube.comI’d always wanted to try my hand at making a long form video about a game for fun and to see if I could do it, so, with Bully turning 20, I decided to start there. It’s a breakdown of the game via a condensed and narrated 100% playthrough that jumps off at points to talk about things in and around the game, largely the movies that inspired it, the future, Rockstar etc.
This community is great, Bully is one of my favourites, so I figured I'd share this here - thanks for checking it out if you do!
I did DM the mods before posting this, but haven't heard back, and the video is not making me a cent, so hopefully it's allowed
