AskBulgaria Help a foreigner who is trying to learn Bulgarian pt.3
Добър ден! Как сме? Аз добре :)
I am studying Bulgarian these days, I wrote this small text where I tried to use the verbs to the infinite (on the last part) and some new vocabulary. My texts tend to be similar between each other but I have no idea of what I could say tbh...
Can someone tell me if I did a good job and maybe point out some errors? I tried my best with the writing highlighting the capital letters, the difference from "У" или "Ч" and I tried to use the "infinite" of verbs (and it was hard, idk if I did a good job or not). The last phrase could be the hardest one, it's the one I am less secure about... Много благодаря :)
Ps: ignore all the corrections I did on the paper, I also had to correct the date because for some reason I thought it was still September and we were in 2027... I could say that I am very tired these days ahahha

I couldn't for some reason, but it's not important. Ypu did a great job, just a couple of places with a wrong word order and some other small mistakes. Thw most important is that the meaning is clear, rhe narive speakers can't even slightly misinterpret the text.
If you want it corrected, it would look line this:
Добър ден! Аз съм Джакомо, италианец съм и съм на осемнадесет години. Имам сестра, която се казва Джулия и е на двадесет и две години. Тя следва философия в университета в Павия. Аз обичам българския език и го уча в къщи. В университета следвам Информатика. Искам да се върна в България и да видя Пловдив или Варна. Аз зная малко български, но искам да го владея добре един ден. :)
Great job again! There are Bulgarian kids your age that would make some if these small mistakes too.
If you are looking for inspiration for what to say, you could try to translate your everyday conversations. What did you talk about with your sister last time you spoke? Or what was your conversation with a classmate on the lunch break today kind of stuff.
Good luck with your studies!

On error I made that you couldn't have firegured out was that I didn't mean at all to use the verb работя (work), I meant to use the verb говоря (speak). The phrase should be "i know very few bulgarian, I hope I will speak it one day"
•
u/antoanetad78 12h ago
No, no, no worries. I got what you meant 😉 You can say "Искам да го владея добре" ( I would like to master it), or "Искам да го говоря добре" ( I would like to speak it well ) or "Искам да го знам добре" ( I would like to know it well). All would relay the same or similar meaning.
I used the word "владея" intentionally, because it's commonly used this way. When one talks about what language they speak. It sounds a bit more official also.

When it comes to languages you could use “зная” (know)“владея”(own) or “говоря”(speak) interchangeably.
“Знам/зная език” is the most commonly used, “владея” would imply that you’d master the language at top level, and “говоря” is a bit of an oxymoron, since you write and not speak, but still used in written speech. All could be used.
“Работя” - not used, but in context would be understood.

You’ve written it easily understandable. I won’t go over some tiny grammar details, just want to say that you can write the capital “Д” as “D”, and the small “Д” as “g”, as it seems it’s taken you longer time to write “Д” over the other letters, and we also do it.
Edit: the only nitpick I have is that you’ve written Bulgar(ia) in 3 different ways, one of which correct - with the letter “Ъ”. It’s not “бАлгария”, not “бУлгария”, the correct spelling is “бЪлгария”.

So mixing cursive? Could make sense because it's the hardest letter to write tbh, I changed how I write у because of ч but д and probably я remains the hardest for me to write (я because I am used to write it mirrored so I write it starting from left to right)

I would also add that д is technically written slightly incorrectly everywhere in your text, but I find it hard to explain how to write it the right way. Basically the “legs” should be below the line. I guess you can compare the word следвам here and in your text where it almost looks like it’s written in superscript, if that makes sense.

You can try out the cursive, here are some templates that are usually given to kids when they are learning to write https://abv.lamez.org/materiali.html It will also make you more comfortable with reading it

The lower horizontal bar of Д should go right along your row line. So the two vertical bars going down from the sides of it should extend below the row. Like here: Пловдив. See how the д sits on the row with its horizontal bar and its vertical bars go a bit downwards?
Honestly this is the thing that I notice the most in your writing, it's completely unnatural. Place the д where it belongs on the row.
Also, be aware nobody writes like this, we use cursive - adapted to our own preferences in a way that is understandable to others. However, if you want to practice writing in type letters, do so, just please put the д where it belongs. (This is also where ц and щ belong.)

You did a good job and the feedback you’re getting is largely correct. For learning the language at home, which is how I understood your note, you’ve done exceptionally well. Some mistakes here or there, but as far as it goes, this is great! And, for what it’s worth, my father is from the eternal city and will never not tell you about it. Point is, go see Plovdiv. It’s beautiful and worth it. Go to the eastern seaboard, too. It’s wonderful there, too. But, I’d avoid the ultra touristy places, unless that’s your vibe. And, keep learning!

Kudos to you for trying to learn our language. It is complicated as a foreigner to write it perfectly but don’t let that stop you from trying. Good luck soldier 🫡
