Unsustainable living situation

Dear all,

I’m not sure whether this is the right sub for this question, I’m also not sure how to properly describe this situation.

I’m looking for advice regarding my current living situation. I’m 23 years old, I work at 80% capacity (70% as of next month) while pursuing an MSc in evening classes. I live with my father, but our home situation is becoming too unsafe.

To keep it short, my dad is psychologically very abusive, and has been so my entire life. Lately, his behaviour has been getting out of control, and our fights are now physical. I’m looking to move out asap, which feels impossible because housing prices in Brussels are incredibly high.

Because I’m a studying, I qualify for student housing. However, I have two cats, which my father has been threatening me with (i.e. he threatens to throw them out). To my knowledge, dorms generally do not allow any pets.

I make around 2.1k net today at 80% capacity and because I do not have a drivers license, it would be better for me to remain in Brussels.

I’m not looking for any monetary support, just genuine advice on what to do next.

My question for you is the following:
1) what are my options right now? What can I do in the event that my dad does actually throw my cats out?
2) with a net income of 2.1k, how much rent can I actually afford in Brussels without burning through my savings or living paycheck to paycheck ?
3) are there any cohousing/dorms that do actually allow for pets?

Thank you all in advance for your support. I’m happy to give some extra context or answer any questions.

Where can I find horse chestnuts / wilde kastanjes?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi all

Does anyone know where I could find horse chestnuts around the city or in a park? I know I've seen these trees all over (their blossoms are lovely in the spring!), but of course now I can't recall where specifically. I would like to use them for a craft project with kids :)

TIA!

Hey everyone,

Found a second-hand car I’m interested in, but I’d like to have it checked before buying. Came across myautocheck.be. Has anyone heard of it before or had any experience with it? Is it trustworthy?

Question ❓ Creche acceptance confusion

I’m pregnant with my first child. I’ve been offered a spot in an ONE creche. But the place isn’t until September, and I go back to work in May so it’s not ideal. But I’m worried I won’t get anything else. If I say yes to this will I then be off the list for all other ONE creches? I can’t afford private.

Birthday drinks recommendations that have a similar vibe?

Any idea for a nice place for birthday drinks for around 15-25 people? I dont want a full area to myself, just a couple tables in a nice/ fun bar on the side/ in the corner for my people to stand around, have a couple of beers and talk.

I was thinkig something like le schmeet (but they have some bad reviews that they cancel last minute on reservations for big groups) or frit cocq (upstairs, but they dont reply). any other ideas for a similar vibe?

Ideas here in the sub are either not a similar vibe, an extra room or are already closed down

Laundry question in Brussels / Belgium

Please bear with me 😭 I noticed that our laundry doesn’t smell fresh whether it’s air dried or machine dried. It would smell like nothing, or worse— it would smell damp. I have tried using different settings in our washing machine plus higher doses of detergent and fabric conditioner but it’s the same 😭

Please recommend a product that would make them smell fresh (not perfumed) 🤞

Question ❓ Physio recommendations

Hello everyone, I can't seem to get out of my running injury after marathon training. After almost two years it is better, but not gone.

I have made every exam under the sun to no avail, seen 4 sports doctors, 2 orthopedic doctors, a podologyst and 4 physio's. While I'm sure that they are all knowledgeable I always felt I wasn't listened to or paid particular attention, and specially with the physio's I really felt they were not analysing my movement patterns as they should.

So I'm wondering if I should give it another try, so I'm looking for an exceptional life saver holistic physio if there is one as such.

Thank you!

After a week of pining here it’s now in Morocco

Edit- Guys this post isn’t to target people from Morocco. There’s bad eggs from every country. I’m curious about the location itself and if it’s a known drop off spot.

Question ❓ Bars for birthday celebration

I’m planning to celebrate my birthday with around 8 friends and I’m looking for a nice, chill bar in Brussels.
Ideally, somewhere cosy and casual, not too loud or expensive, where we can sit together, have some drinks and chat comfortably.

Le Petit Canon seems nice but I don’t know if it will be easy to find a table at the weekend.

Any recommendations? Thanks! 😊

Question ❓ F card waiting time?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice from people who have gone through the F card process in Belgium.
My wife applied for her F card around 3 months ago through family reunification. We are legally married, and she is living with me at my address in Belgium.
She received her Annex 19ter (Bijlage 19ter) and her orange card. The police residence check was completed during the first week, and everything went positively. She is living with me, and there have been no problems with the residence check.
It has now been around 3 months since her application, and we are wondering how much longer it might take.
I have a few questions:
How long did you wait to receive your F card after the police check?
Does the Immigration Office still need to make a decision, even if the police check was positive?
Is it possible to receive the F card earlier than the usual 6-month period?
Will we receive a letter from the municipality when the card is ready, or do we need to contact them ourselves?
I would really appreciate hearing about other people’s experiences, especially anyone who applied through family reunification in Belgium.
Thanks in advance!

Rant 🤬 First time ordering a drink at dunkin and I’m disappointed

I’ve been living in Bx for 5 years now yet this is the first time I ever ordered a drink from Dunkin’. The drink was delicious but the size is 2 times smaller than the picture showed, and there wasn’t an option for choosing the size of the cup. If I knew it was going to be this small I simply wouldn’t have ordered 😭 idk if I’m being a dramatic bitch or if it’s normal and I’m just too uncultured abt Dunkin’ drinks

Where can I find people to talk about my kinky journey?

I am out of a longer relationship and now am slowly (re-)discovering my sexual side. I really want to use this time of being single to make expiriences and push my boundries and find fun connections with other humans (aka live my slut era haha). I have downloaded feeld and I have started to make some really gooood experiences. But now my problem: all my friends (I am F28) are very very vanilla. They dont judge me and i can def share "hey i had a stranger come over last night to fuck me" but then they also dont really understand it and are all in happy cosy cute relationships. I really want people to share this crazy expierence with, who might go trough something similar or who wnt to share their own gossip. Any ideas where to find that either online, here on reddit or in person?

Edit because I should have been more specific haha: I am mostly looking for women to exchange over this. As a straight women myself, its not horny men that I am lacking :D

I genuinely don’t understand why Brussels is hated

I lived in three different countries besides Belgium, two in Western Europe. I had the opportunity to live or work in some of the most romanticized cities in Europe. As an aesthetically conscious person, I casually admire Brussels much more than most of the places I’ve lived.

I never get bored while walking around Brussels. It is exciting to change vibes constantly, jumping from a bureaucrat district to hipster neighborhood to a worker class area. In one hour, I can feel in Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin and Warsaw as I walk. Most of the cities I’ve lived barely had such a character, you were always attached to one city identity and one style of architecture, almost as if the city is a museum. Here, I love seeing art nouveau houses, modern buildings and Flemish/Dutch houses together so I can admire them all.

I understand that its not for everyone, most people expect a more organized urban structure from this region. But I find it interesting that Brussels is almost never praised internationally with its character, while it is actually very unique and fun.
