Advice How long to leave this skull buried?

Hey guys, I am very new to bone collecting. I found this almost fully decomposed sheep(?) carcass on Dartmoor (UK) and picked up the skull. I tried the soaking in dish soap water method for about 24h but it really stinks, so I would like to do the burial method. It has some gunk inside of it that I can't get to with my hands, and a small amount of skin and hair on the back. How long should I bury it for? Only asking because the advice I've researched is very general and the skull I picked up is pretty clean compared to the examples I looked at. Any tips are appreciated :P

Advice Suspicious of Ren Faire Purchase

I bought this fox skull from a vendor at the renaissance faire last weekend and I’m just really suspicious of its cleanliness.

I’m just not sure what the white stuff on it is, it keeps falling/flaking off the skull. It also…smells stale? Idk how else to describe it. I don’t know much but I know at the very least clean bones shouldn’t have a smell. Any suggestions on what to do?

Advice I want to keep my cats bones.

Listen I know it might sound crazy but I love my baby girl with all my heart. Shes a senior now (13 in human, 68 in cat) and has multiple health conditions. Shes happy and healthy but I know there will come a time she has to go. I always wanted to keep her teeth. Which i was going to ask when she was cremated. But now im wondering can I keep her bones too? Is there someone or somewhere specific to call or go? Has anyone ever done this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Not sure if im allowed to post her so ill add her to the comments for those wanting to see her 💕

Advice how to degrease deer skull?

hello! i’ve had a deer skull i got from an antique skull for a couple years now. my parents house had a pretty bad house spider infestation and i ended up soaking it in water before i bring it down to my new apartment. there wascobwebs and spider skins in it. it didn’t smell before but after soaking it in water for about a week it smells like death. its gotten a bit better since its dried up but definitely needs something done to fix the smell. should i degrease it with dish soap? if so, for how long? thank you!! 🖤

Purchased from a local vendor who had a collection of animal bones. I'd like to whiten them if possible, but I'm a newb. Does this need further degreasing before whitening?

Advice Hare skeleton

Was very excited to find this hare skeleton in the woods at work today! It's pretty much complete, just missing an arm.

I've macerated/degreased (sheep) skulls but never been lucky enough to find a whole specimen before. Is there a way I can prep this without it coming into a hundred tiny pieces, or am I going to have to prepare for my first articulation? It doesn't have any soft bits left, just a little skin and hairy feet.

My grandpa's neighbor has let us take the parts of the deer he doesnt use, getting the hide (with head attached) how shpuld i go about separating the hide from the head, and how do I preserve the skull? Ive only ever gotten 1 skull from road kill and have never collected bones from a fresh animal, ive looked a little into it about "brain scrambling" but I cant realy find any video showing the whole process of removing the skin and meat and such from the skull. Explain it to me like im 5 cause im very much not educated on the process, my mother knows how to preserve and flesh the hide itself but I also want to keep the skull wich she has no knowledge or interest in. If anyone has any knollage on processing animals woth the intent of preserving the skull id love to know (preferably soon the deer was killed and today)

Hello!

I am an Archaeology student at my local Uni and we are currently processing the finds from our field school this summer. One of the units had this bone and we are all struggling to give it an ID- even two of our professors and a master student are having a tough time.

Since it is so small we are assuming it's juvenile but it is quite worn so I suppose it could have been larger.

This was found at a Buffalo jump and we have looked at the Uni's Buffalo reference collection as well as other species that are common where we were digging. Any thought?

Found these bones on the shore of a river in Oklahoma. Couldn't find a skull. Any ideas? Would love to know what Bones these are and what animal they are from. I can tell the hip bone and what I presume are ribs at the top, but what are the others?

Advice Water staining on antlers

I've been working on degreasing a few skulls and two of the deer caps ended up with staining on the antlers.

Is there something I can do to clean them without wrecking things?

Would soaking them in ammonia water instead of dish soap water clear it up?
