Rotted transom

Post image
• Upvotes

I got this project a while back and only just got around to really putting time into it, I noticed the transom is definitely rotted. How should I tackle this? The boat was 1k so I don’t wanna empty my wallets on it, but I just got the 1981 Evinrude 60hp idling and running great. It’s a 16ft fiberglass hull I would have to find someone with an engine hoist as I do not have one

Got a Predator 670 22 HP on a GoDevil Long Tail kit on a 1436 Aluminum Jon boat. The throttle doesn’t want to stay consistent it’s like a galloping rhythm like a horse. Tried adjusting the carb with no luck anyone know what might be going on here? Thanks.

Looking to purchase this boat in Ontario for $24k it’s a 18’ 2009 legend Excalibur with a 2009 mercury 2 stroke. Comes with fish finder, cb radio, and a trolling motor that is currently not working. Any opinions/advice is greatly appreciated.
Did take out on water for testing seems to work just fine.

Which seal for lower unit bolts

When I go to change the lower unit gear lube to winterize my engine. Should I order this black seal or the red seal to replace? Last year when I did it I just re used the same seal that was already on there so figured I should replace it this time. But can’t remember if it has the black seal, the red seal, or both. 2003 Mercury 40hp 2 stroke

Best Motor Yachts for living aboard at marina

Looking for a 35-45ft motor yacht to live aboard at a marina, drive out once or twice a week on the weekends. Currently own a 21ft with a small cabin to get used to driving and owning a boat etc…

Budget around 150k for two people with a small dog.

Favourites so far: Silverton 35 motor yacht and cruisers yacht 3750.

Any recommendations? TIA🙏

EDIT: thanks for all the tips already, we do have a slip available for live aboard.

Sailing the Cyclades Islands (Greece) in november

I'm planning a week of sailing around the Cyclades in Greece in November, on a 40ft monohull starting from Lavrio. I'm thinking of stopping at Kea, Kythnos, Serifos, Syros and Tinos before heading back. I'd like to visit some small villages and find nice anchorages along the way.

for those who've sailed around the Cyclades in November, would you try to visit all these islands in a 7days trip?

- are the ports on these islands still open?

- would you plan night stops in advance?

- any passages along this route you'd avoid in November?

Thanks!

First boat

I grew up boating with my dad and friends and have spent endless hours on boats. I finally made the leap and purchased my own.

It’s a 1997 hydra sport 20 foot center console. It has a 2024 Suzuki 175 on it with 55 hours. The boat sat quite a bit the last year or so according to the previous owner so I took it in to an authorized Suzuki dealer and had a full service done on the motor. They said the motor looks perfect and is as good as new. I walked and knocked on every inch of the boat and it has zero soft spots. I also tugged on the motor and there was no flex or movement in the transom. It has a 85 gallon poly tank that seems to be in good shape.

The trailer needs new bunk carpet, wheels and hubs. There is a good bit of spider cracks on the hill but that is to be expected on a 30 year old hull. Because it’s old school wood construction I do have some worries about rot. I was able to get a hand on two stingers and they felt solid though there was a fair bit of moister in the hull.

Is there anything I should be doing to help avoid rot? If anyone has experience with the hull, how did you like it? Pros and cons?

With all that being said I feel pretty good about the purchase. I paid $11k. So basically buy and motor and get a hull for free.

Anyone aware of a cover for these? I know I can buy a new block with ones that have it, but didn’t want to go that way if I didn’t have to.

#8 surface drive?

Scrolling FBM as one does and I came across this 39 ft cat, and I have never seen outdrives like this? I’m in the southwest and we have the more typical inboard outboards. What is the benefit to this type? Does it handle better? Is it more common for off shore boats?

Boat Insurance - Chubb

Does anyone use Chubb for your boat insurance? Im shopping around and I noticed that they're considerably cheaper than the major providers. For those that have Chubb, any issues with any filed claims?

Canbat/AGM's

Canbat batteries in Vancouver.. Anyone have any experience with them. Reviews and specs seem great but the batteries seem to be cheaper then the alternatives. Specifically looking at ordering 6 6v GC2 200ah AGMs ($256) to replace a set of lead acids that are acting up.. As well, my lead acids a pair of them are setup as my starter bank. however, i don't see CCA ratings for my lead acids or the canbats. Does that matter, should i be concerned they won't handle the cranking. I have a westerbeeke 33 and I have sent this inquiry to them. Just curious if others have AGM knowledge they can share to help me better make a decision. Are interstates ($567) really worth $300 more a piece?

Got the boat lifted yesterday after a couple of months in freshwater, usually in seawater. It was last out in April when it was recently antifouled and no signs of this then.

Fuel smell in back compartment normal?

I’m gonna be buying my first boat. How concerned should I be when there is a faint fuel smell in the rear compartment of a boat? I’m looking at mostly boats with an outboard. But two so far have had the smell. It’s in compartments where the fuel filter, hoses are. These boats are 10-20 years old, so I can’t expect them to be perfect. Just want to avoid safety issues, or very large expense repairs

Vitrifrigo fridge sending me bankrupt.

Hi everyone! Was just hoping for some advice/ recommendation.
I have a Vitrifrigo fridge in the boat I’m staying on and have accidentally poked a hole in the evaporator plate (small black dot in attached picture)

I have reached out to a few marine specific mechanics and also general appliance mechanics. I have accepted it won’t be a cheap fix 😅 but would love to not have to replace the whole unit.

I found the part online that needs to be replaced, but no one seems that keen on taking the job on.

Has anyone had this or a similar issue happen and had been able to repair? I’m struggling to accept having to buy a whole new one!!

Thank so much!!

First boat tips

Just got this as my first boat. Never driven one before so I figured I'd start out small. It's a Echo 12 sailboat bought off sea cadets Canada. Looking to use it as a motorboat instead of sailing it and was wondering if anyone else has seen any projects with them. Any mods I should do to it to make it better or any suggestions at all would be great! Im pretty ambitious at times so I'm up for anything, I'd love to put in a windshield and have a steering wheel with outboard motor. Also from PEI Canada if that matters at all. Thsnks!

Boat seating looks completely different once you imagine 6 actual adults sitting there

Something I've started doing while looking at boats is ignoring the official capacity number and just counting places where I'd genuinely want to sit for an hour.

This changes things pretty quickly lol.

A boat can technically have seating everywhere, but then one person is sideways, somebody's sitting directly in the sun, two people have nowhere to put their feet and the guy opposite you has his knees touching yours.

I've been comparing layouts around the Hanover Yachts range lately and it's made me way more interested in how cockpit seating is arranged than how many people the boat technically holds.

Most of my use would probably be 4 to 6 adults anyway, so I'd rather have six genuinely comfortable spots than enough cushions to claim you can bring fifteen people.

For anyone who entertains on their boat pretty regularly, what seating arrangement has worked best?

Everyone around one table? Separate little areas? Forward and aft seating so people naturally split up?

Feels like something you wouldn't really understand until you've had a group aboard
