Education Yearly Reminder: Indonesian Blue Tongue Skinks DO NOT Brumate

Indonesian blue tongue skinks do not naturally brumate.

Only their Australian cousins do - even then, not all of them decide to brumate.

I have made this a yearly reminder since many places online do not actually differentiate and it gets really confusing!

The following temperature information is gathered from multiple studies that recorded ground temperatures within Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. If others have more recent (and therefore more accurate data), please provide the links and we will dig through and adjust!

Indonesian blue tongue skinks do not experience ambient temperatures below 70℉ (21.1℃). Indonesia/Papua New Guinea is a tropical climate that does not experience seasonal variation aside from “wet” and “dry” seasons caused by the amount of rainfall.

Region / Population Temp Min–Max  (°F) Temp Min–Max  (°C) Humidity Min–Max (%) Notes
Papua New Guinea Peninsula (Trans-Fly & Peninsula lowlands) (Irian Jaya, AKA Papuan) 73–96 ℉ 22.7–35.5 ℃ 68–100 % Hot, humid tropical lowlands; humidity remains high even at night
Merauke region, South Papua 72–98 ℉ 22.2–36.6 ℃ 60–96 % Seasonal wet–dry cycles; some early dry season drops in relative humidity
Sorong (West Papua lowlands) 74–95 ℉ 23.3–35 ℃ 70–98 % Stable warm temps year-round; low night cooling
Aru Islands 73–95 ℉ 22.7–35 ℃ 68–99 % High canopy coverage; buffered extremes
Kei Islands 75–95 ℉ 23.8–35 ℃ 72–100 % Coastal and forest edge habitat
Ambon / Seram (Maluku) 72–93 ℉ 22.2–33.8 ℃ 70–99 % Strong diurnal relative humidity cycle, small temp fluctuation
Halmahera (North Maluku) 74–94 ℉ 23.3–34.4 ℃ 60–100 % Lowland rainforest floor and edge; high humidity
Tanimbar Islands 75–97 ℉ 23.8–36.1 ℃ 62–95 % Drier than Halmahera; more open woodland
Northern Papua rainforest interior 72–91 ℉ 22.2–32.7 ℃ 78–100 % More buffered temps, extremely high night humidity

Due to the consistency in temperature in their tropical environment, Indonesian blue tongue skinks are active year-round.

The majority of Australian blue tongue skinks do not experience ambient temperatures lower than 50℉/10℃. Blotched blue tongue skinks, however, can experience as low as 45℃ based on the studies we found. This seasonal variation is why Australian species brumate. Some species, such as Shinglebacks, Blotchies, Westerns, and Centralians require quite low brumation temperatures to successfully reproduce. Too high of temps have caused reproductive struggles.

NOTE: WITH EXTREME HIGHS AND LOWS THESE SKINKS ARE HIDING AWAY IN SAFER TEMPERATURES. Also; Aussie skinks do experience some higher humidity, but these are MICROCLIMATES and not consistent year-round.

MAINTAIN TYPICAL RECOMMENDED RANGES!

Region / Species (Common) Temp Min–Max (°F) Temp Min–Max (°C) Humidity Min–Max (%) Notes
Northern Territory (Top End, Arnhem Land) NORTHERN 71–102 ℉ 21.7–38.9 ℃ 45–96 % Seasonal wet–dry fluctuations; strong midday peaks, high humidity at night
Eastern Queensland (coastal) EASTERN 68–97 ℉ 20–36.1 ℃ 50–95 % Humid subtropical forest edges and open woodland
New South Wales (Sydney Basin) EASTERN 59–95 ℉ 15–35 ℃ 35–88 % Cooler nights, warm sunny days; high variability
Victoria & Tasmania (cool temperate) BLOTCHED 45–86 ℉ 7.2–30 ℃ 55–100 % Morning dew, fog common; basking critical for activity
South Australia / Western Australia (arid) SHINGLEBACK 55–110 ℉ 12.7–43.3 ℃ 10–65 % Very hot ground temps midday, humidity spikes pre-dawn
Southwestern WA forest WESTERN 50–102 ℉ 10–38.9 ℃ 25–80 % Ground shade buffers peaks
Arid interior (Spinifex plains) CENTRALIAN 60–113 ℉ 15.5–45 ℃ 8–60 % Extreme heat; uses burrows to escape
Nullarbor & semi-arid south SHINGLEBACK 53–108 ℉ 11.6–42.2 ℃ 12–58 % Pronounced daily fluctuation
Northern arid NT / WA WESTERN 72–107 ℉ 22.2–41.6 ℃ 20–70 % Recorded at ground level under spinifex
Central Australia (desert margins) CENTRALIAN 66–111 ℉ 18.8–43.8 ℃ 10–55 % Midday temperatures often exceed activity thresholds

NOTE: WITH EXTREME HIGHS AND LOWS THESE SKINKS ARE HIDING AWAY IN SAFER TEMPERATURES. Also; Aussie skinks do experience some higher humidity, but these are MICROCLIMATES and not consistent year-round.

Physiology

Reptiles are ectothermic, which means they need to warm up via their environment. They need heat to digest food; they need heat for their immune system to work and to fight off infections; they need heat for literally everything regarding bodily function.

If you put any reptile that doesn’t naturally brumate into too cold of an environment to “force” brumation, those reptiles become lethargic and can get quite sick due to their dropped immune system. They naturally shut down to try and preserve resources, as they cannot do anything without their proper heat range. This is not brumation. This is a physiological stress response. This can be very harmful to them!

Arguably, Indonesian blue tongue skinks experience this physiological stress in response to temps that are too cold. If your Indo is showing “brumation” symptoms, the environment is most likely too cold, too empty, or the animal is sick.

Winter in the northern hemisphere is the equivalent of dry season in Indonesia/Papua New Guinea. This means that our winters are the breeding season for Indos. It is quite common for some skinks to go off of food during this time due to hormones.

Behavior & Recommendations

  • If your skink is quite active, but not eating much, that is typically hormones. We recommend you triple check temps, but I would not be concerned.
  • If your skink is inactive and not eating much, triple check temps and make sure your skink isn’t going into shed. Going into shed is often a cause to hide more frequently and not eat - this behavior shouldn’t last more than 2 weeks at a time, however.
  • If your temps are too cold at night, please use a deep heat projector, ceramic heat emitter, or radiant heat panel to increase ambient temps - heat mats are not appropriate in this regard as they do not warm up ambient temps properly. Heat mats are not appropriate for blue tongue skinks in general.
  • If your daytime temps are too cold, you will either need to add a ceramic heat emitter/radiant heat panel or deep heat projector as supplemental heat. These are not appropriate for basking, they are only for supplemental heat. A deep heat projector assists with warming surface temperatures, while ceramic heat emitters or radiant heat panels assist with ambient temperatures. You may also need to look into increasing the wattage of the incandescent or halogen bulb used for basking.
  • Weigh adults twice a month - if they lose 10% or more of their initial body weight, that is a concern. (So if a 400 gram lizard loses 40 grams or more, that is a concern)

Recommended Temps & Humidity

Indo temps and humidity should be as follows:

  • Basking (surface temperature measured with an infrared laser thermometer): between 105-115℉ (40-46℃). Surface temperatures are naturally higher than ambient temperatures.
  • Ambient Cool Side (measured with a digital thermometer down at skink level, cool side of the enclosure): 70-80℉ (21-26℃)
  • Ambient Warm Side (measured with a digital thermometer down at skink level, warm side of the enclosure) : 85-95℉ (29-35℃)
  • Night time range: 70-75℉ (21-24℃) - We recommend providing supplemental heat when temps reach below 70℉ (21℃)
  • Humidity: Humidity for ALL Indonesians (yes, including Halmahera) must be within the 60-100% range. They naturally experience an increase and decrease in humidity within this range. It stays above 70% the majority of the year, but during the dry season (Northern Hemisphere’s Winter) it can drop as low as 60%. Humidity is naturally higher at night and lower during the day.

Please let me know if there are any questions!

It's been officially one year since i brought home my little gremlin & I couldn't be happier with how that first year has gone 😭❤️

From a sassy and hissy baby to a now (somewhat) chill and "cuddly" lizard that enjoys head scratches and burrowing into my arm. Here's to many more years 🍻

He has what looks like dried blood on this scale near his mouth. Other than that he seems normal and his scales are fine. I’m wondering if he simply cut himself or this is something worse

Question bts always wants to come out!

Post image
• Upvotes

my eastern bts has been trying to dig through the glass of his enclosure for the past few days. he's always done this but recently, he just won't stop. he loves to come out and explore, but obviously he can't always come out. I tried rearranging his enclosure so he had things in there to explore and dig out, but he still wants to get out! right now he's finally exploring in his enclosure, but im sure it's not long before he comes rubbing his nose against the glass again. I would rather he didnt get injuries from this, so does any one have any enrichment ideas for his enclosure that will keep him engaged? right now I have logs, lots of dirt and leaf litter, and plants for him, but any other ideas are welcome

Feeding Feeding question for potentially stunted growth

Thumbnail

I got my skink Ziti in November of 2025. When I got him I was told he was probably 4-5 months old but I got him at a rescue so they were not sure. He had come to the rescue with a tail bite injury which both the vet and the rescue thought would result in the end falling off. It did not fall off and he can still move that part of his tail the only issue is shedding there sometimes. Since he is probably around a year and a half old he should be eating once or twice a week but he still seems so small and is still growing a lot. When I first got him he didn’t grown as fast. He currently weighs about 7.4 ounces and snout to back legs is about 8” long. I think his growth was temporary stunted while his tail healed so I am not sure if I should be feeding him like an adult yet. I know that Halmaheras are smaller but I can’t find solid data on how big they usually are. I hatter he’s a picture with a ruler from today and the las photo is when I got him. Thanks!

TLDR: skink potentially had growth stunted for a bit, should I feed him like an adult or juvenile based on his current size.

Health Question about scale damage

My little bluey Tau recently got into a scuffle with her hide, and ended up scuffing up a face scale pretty bad. I thought it would heal up fine and shed off on its own, but she just shed recently, and I noticed the scale was still damaged. I scrubbed it a bit with a soft toothbrush to see if it would come off, but found that the damage was a bit deeper than I thought. I've mostly got it cleaned out, it doesn't look infected, though there's still a tiny bit of dirt in the scale. All in all, I don't think this warrants a vet visit, but is there a way to medicate it or at least disinfect it to reduce the chance of infection? I had a repticare spray, but it expired over a year ago, haha.

Probably notable mentions: heat and humidity are good. She's still active, eating, and pooping all the same. No concern of scale rot or respiratory problems. She just....likes pushing things around. Sometimes a little too hard!

Edited to add photos

Question Cryptic Basking?

Thumbnail

So this is my boys hot side of his enclosure it’s got his decent sized black plastic hide that we all know and love but I never know the proper name of and I recently added some nice cork flats to the front of it because the light lands directly in front of his hide and maybe 20% of the light coverage covers the top of the hide itself. Ever since, about 80% of his basking consists of placing his body out halfway like this and will only occasionally go ontop of his hide like he used to or use the cork. I think it’s pretty interesting and I’m glad I’m giving him enough options that he even has a way to bask while remaining in his hide. Anyways, just wondering if this counts as cryptic basking lol.
FYI: last week both of my lights my heat bulb + UVB strip went out not 100% sure why but I was able to get a new bulb at Petco and I have a new strip coming in the mail either hopefully the day after tomorrow or maybe the following day. Thank you and god bless! Also this is him directly after grubbing 2 dubias and having his monthly mouth full of banana. 😋

Don't worry!
1. I got the leaf piece* out before she swallowed it (not that it would have done her any harm, but still).
2. She only gets a portion of the jelly pots when I really want to motivate her with a puzzle.

*She's in a bioactive setup.

Question I think my boy is brumating, what should I know?

So it’s getting colder in Canada and my boy got that internal clock ticking for brumation, so what should I know about it? Like how often do I feed him now? I normally feed him every Thursday, do I feed him every other Thursday? What else should I do?

Question Isopod Question

Hello all,

I recently purchased some dairy cow isopods at the recommendation of the specialty pet store I went to. They based this recommendation on what I shared with them; Northern Blue-Tongue Skink, cypress mulch, and wanting my terrarium to include detritovores. Sadly, after a few days they all perished. After doing some reading, I am wondering if the environment in my terrarium was too dry for them. Does anyone have any ideas of what might have gone wrong and/or a species of isopod that would be better suited to my terrarium.

Feeding How to make my skink eat food that I made for him?

Ok, so the way I feed my skink goes two ways: The food I prepare for him, he usually eats halfheartedly most of the of the time. Its usually a puree of vegetables and protein sources he can eat. And to clarify, he usually does not eat vegetables I put in front of him as they are.

But when I feed him reptilinks omivore diet (the 50/25/25 one), he eats them without any hesitation.

So my question is how can I make my skink eat the purees I made for him more often? I feel like one of the main reasons he eats reptilinks diet is due to the fact that they are in collagen casings and have a shape that's easy to eat (no idea if that made any sense).

Health Should I go to the vets?

Hey everyone! Just looking for some advice about a patch on my Northern blue tongue skink’s head. She’s just over 4 months old.
I’ve been trying to work out what’s happened, so here’s a little timeline!
4th October: Her head looked normal in photos. Looking back through her camera footage, I noticed her pushing herself quite forcefully into one of her hides which is now a tad small for her and has been removed. I’m wondering if she could have scraped her head doing this.

5th October: She spent pretty much the entire day tucked away in her coconut hide without moving much.

6th October: Just before shedding, I noticed a couple of scales on her head looked paler than normal. After she shed, the area developed a really strange sandy/gritty texture, almost like dirt stuck to her scales. I tried gently wiping it off, but she flinched as though it hurt, so I left it alone.

7th–8th October: The patch was still there. I initially worried about a burn, but she hasn’t been able to reach her heat bulb for months, so I think that’s unlikely. Looking back at the footage, I’m wondering if it’s an abrasion from burrowing into her hide. I gave her a bath to soak the area incase of stuck shed.

9th October: The patch seemed to be getting smoother, and she was no longer flinching when I touched the area. She’s been behaving normally and eating well. I also showed the reptile shop, who thought it looked like a scuff and advised keeping an eye out for infection. They said it may improve with her next shed but could leave some scarring/discolouration.

12th October (today): The discolouration is still there. The affected scales are flat and level with the surrounding ones, but the texture seems a little rough again. I’m struggling to tell whether it’s just damaged scales healing or something else.

Someone on Facebook mentioned a possible burn or the start of scale rot, which has worried me!
Has anyone experienced anything similar? Does this look like a healing abrasion, or something more concerning?
I’m looking into getting her checked by a reptile vet, but I’d really appreciate hearing anyone’s experiences in the meantime.
I’ll attach photos from before, during and after her shed so you can see how it’s changed. ❤️
