Yesterday, I was reminded about the beauty of black hair culture.
I 26F invited two friends for a sleepover yesterday. Taylor 26F who is black, and Miya 26F who is Malaysian.
I met Taylor in high school when I was 14 and Miya in undergrad when I was 22. Miya is a third year law student at the school I went to for my masters and Taylor was an incoming first year law student this year. Over the summer, I introduced the two of them and they hit it off and formed their own friendship.
I stayed in the same city after grad school last year and got a really nice apartment downtown. This was my first time hosting so I wanted both of them to come. Miya has been having a rough time; her kitten died at 9 weeks from FIV and her grandma passed three weeks ago. All of this happened during law school finals.
When I asked Miya if she could still make it, she said no. She was really embarrassed because stress and depression lead to her not washing her hair for almost and month. She said her hair was matted and dirty and she had a flight to catch to Malaysia in 3 days and she was overwhelmed with the idea of washing and detangling.
In the group chat, Taylor and I told her to still come to the sleepover and that we’d wash and detangle her hair. She said no a few times and we eventually convinced her.
We did a pre pop and started on the detangle process. Washed her hair over the kitchen sink. I had a hair mask, olaplex and a sit under dryer for deep conditioning. We blow dried her hair (type 2 but THICK and wavy) with my pattern blow dryer. Taylor trimmed her ends.
Almost 2/3rds of the way through, Miya broke down crying. Like sobbing at the fact that we would do this for her. She likened it to a salon treatment and said she didn’t deserve this and had ‘dreamt of friends like this’. She was also sooooo grateful that we didn’t ’judge her about her hair being dirty’.
We told her that this was normal for us! Washing hair, detangling while watching movies. Having friends braid each others hair while hanging out when we were younger. We reminisced about the time Taylor helped me detangle 3 months worth of old box braids with caked on gel and lint.
This experience reminded me of the beauty of black hair culture. Seeing the acts of care, bonding and sister hood from an outside perspective rewired my brain and filled me with a deep sense of pride and warmness :)

I've been dating this girl for about five months, and things were going really well. We were seeing each other constantly, going out, making memories, and building a good relationship spending time with her at her place or my place...etc..She even told me she genuinely cared about me and was developing feelings for me.
Throughout our relationship, I never mentioned that I wear a hair system because it looks completely natural. She never questioned my hair or suspected anything. I'm a daily wearer, so I remove it at night and put it back on in the morning
One night at dinner, I decided it was time to tell her. I casually asked what she thought about guys who wear wigs, and she said she thought it was okay. So I opened up and told her I wear a hair system myself.**
She seemed understanding and even said, "I can't even tell you're wearing one!" I felt relieved and thought everything was fine.
We finished dinnerI dropped her off, n went home. The next morning, I woke up to a long text saying she didn't think things would work out between us. She also mentioned needing to move out and get her life together, something she had never brought up before.
I was completely blindsided. Now I can't help wondering whether telling her about ma hair system changed the way she saw me. After five months of building a connection, I suddenly felt like I had ruined everything by being honest about something she never even noticed.
This experience has made me realize how quickly things can change, even when u think someone genuinely likes u. I can't say for certain that my hair system was the reason she ended things, but the timing has left me questioning everything.
My advice to guys who wear hair systems don't be ashamed of wearing one, but think carefully about when and how u disclose it. Not everyone will react the same way ....and i would think twice about letting someone know about my hair system from now on.

Hello, y'all! I just got done detangling my hair and this is how much hair I lost from doing that. It was 2 and half weeks of no detangling and barely/minimum maintenance which I know isn't good but life has doing its thing lately lol. Is this a lot of hair to lose or am I good? I've been growing my hair for 2 and half years so I'm still learning haha

I’ve been dealing with breakage since I was a kid. My hair breaks off SO easily. If I rake my fingers through it, hair will come out. I chopped off a lot of it because I thought it was due to extreme split ends. The breakage decreased but still happens a bit and my hair feels more brittle now! Any advice is so appreciated. I feel like I keep my hair put away and also out a healthy amount of time.

My side hairlines have been aggressively receding back last couple months and it’s scaring me. I’ve just started minoxidil this week but is there something I could do to stop it going back anymore? For reference: no one in my family has had this issue or in my bloodline so I’m super scared.

I noticed at the beginning of this year that I have A LOT of breakage and short, uneven pieces in the front of my hair, likely from previous braiders and braids that were too tight. My edges also seem to come and go, but lately they’ve been looking worse.
I tried mini twists in March, which helped, but then got boho knotless braids this summer and kept them in for about 8 weeks. I took them out in early August and haven’t gotten my hair done since because my hair (and wallet) need a break. Since then, I’ve done my best to stick to low tension styles and tried treating my hair, but after washing out my mini braids today, I feel like I’m back at square one.
I need advice on how to grow and retain length in the front of my hair so it can catch up with the rest. **I’m looking for maintenance tips, low tension styles, and product recommendations. I’m getting mini twists in two weeks, so I’d also appreciate advice on how to care for my hair while they’re in!**
Products I’ve tried so far (inconsistently 🫣):
Cécred Edge Drops Serum
MaryRuth’s Hair Growth

First photo is a reference and the 2nd photo is my hair right now. I wanted to achieve this look and I was told that it’s some sort of perm/texturizer. I know you don’t know how you’ll look for sure until you do it so I’m on the edge because I don’t want to look ridiculous. The looser curls would also help with the management too. What do yall think? I think I have the length to pull it off

I am on the hunt for GOOOOD affordable human hair bundles emphasis on the good! I find that whenever I buy bundles they last me like 3 installs max, even when I spent $5-600! I don’t have a problem paying more for good hair but the hair has to actually be good! True to length with minimal shed & tangling is that too much to ask for? Please drop the sites that offer good bundles for a good price too! At the same time i don’t wanna pay 900-1000 for some fucking hair that’s insane! I’ve been speaking with a vendor on whatsapp called KBL hair and the invoice is pretty expensive which has me nervous bc I’ve never seen/used this hair before! Please help 😫😫
Im looking for 4 bundles 24, 26, 28 & 30 inch!
I’m also looking for good U/V part wigs if you have any recommendations please.
Thanks

I am 50 years old. Biracial. I’m already dealing with enough as a woman at my age. Since I was 11, I had relaxers put on my hair. My well meaning aunts, said “you’ll have hair like Oprah”, which was very exciting to me. Because my Mom would always have my hair cut short like my brothers. I did not have hair like Oprah. And grew up with people wanting to touch my hair, call it poofy, and just make me as uncomfortable as heck.
Last year, I decided I did not want to deal with DIY relaxers,so I stopped. I kept it pulled back, and then last month I carefully trimmed away the straight “straw” from my ends. Leaving me with a giant Afro. Since then it’s been a daily, expensive, fight! I’ve tried so many leave-in conditioners, gels and creams. By noon, my hair is always a weird solid wall.
I’m sensitive to things like tightness. Braids will not work. Hair on or near my eyes and face will drive me nuts. I just feel like a hair failure, and I will likely resort to relaxing it again. All I wanted was my defined curls to stay soft and curly. Not whatever the hell happens midday, every day. I swear my hair actively rejects moisture. I’m at a loss, and overwhelmed.
Sorry for this long rant. I just finished detangling and cried.

I put in leave in and hair oil today, and I’m pretty sure I have 4c hair

Soooo, I was introduced to a hair vender today and their prices are pretty high but I’m banking on quality wish me luck. They sell the bundles and then they make the wig. I can install my own wig I’m scared to cut it so I may go to a professional to style it. This is the look I am going for . What type of hair and length layers should I buy and what do you even ask for at the salon?

Protective hairstyles are meant to protect our hair, so why do some braiders damage it in the process of creating one?
I recently got my hair braided by an African woman, and I was afraid to speak up as she repeatedly pulled out strands of my hair while using a rat-tail comb to make each part for the knotless braids I’d requested). Mind you I had blow-dried my hair before leaving home, and then she straightened it with a steam straightener. As the appointment went on, my hair sometimes got tangled—not because of its texture, but because she started pulling from the roots to the ends with a RAT TAIL COMB. That made her handle my hair roughly to make it easier to braid. 🧍🏽♀️
I’m tired of this. I know I could have spoken up, offered suggestions, and shown her how to work from the ends up to the roots. But she did this with every part, and I kept thinking that the fate of getting decent-looking parts was in her hands. I’m not saying every African braider is like this. It’s just exhausting that we don’t treat our 4-type hair and others with 4-type hair with gentleness, patience, and respect.

I just did my braids I am looking to get my splits ends removed do yall think I need a trim the only reason my hair looks this good because I did a protein treatment and I steam combed it

This is 4 weeks after getting keratin treatment. As you can see at the front and sides of my hair the 4C is not blending in with the rest of my hair. I've used a blow dryer and flat iron straighteners. How do I fix this?
r/BlackHair • u/citynosex • 16h ago
I only use the brush when my hair is damp and I use product, but I am concerned about my hair breaking. Is daily use of the brush not a good idea if my hair goal is growth? I have tight 4c hair, and like a defined look. If the twist king brush is not suitable for long term use because of breakage, what are folks doing to define their curls

Was self-conscious at first but decided to go to work like this anyways because I felt my most confident. Had no issues and my friends complimented my hairstyle. First time having undid comb coils like this.
