Since the last post about this got deleted because it contained a X screenshot, hopefully this one actually stays for comment.

Seems reasonable, the ads aren’t really appropriate for children at all, either in how sexual they are or that they promote addictive gambling

Kids are on the pokemon card gambling

u/ReasonableTruth0 St. Louis Cardinals 10h ago

Kids can’t even get cards anymore.  The adults buy them all out!

Does make me sad when I see like a 9 year old in the local card shop looking at baseball cards in the dollar bin and looking up recent eBay sales and speculating whether the centering is good enough for a 10. And such a kid is doing it the "right" way by not ripping packs, aka gambling!

It makes them feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Its that dopamine rush. Same with trading cards in the 90s.  Im sure it wont all crash down due to the speculator market...

I really don’t understand why everyone is so hung up on hiding nudity or anything of the sort when it comes to children, but they’re fine with gambling or violence. When I was a kid I watched braveheart with my dad, he made me look away when there were boobs on screen but I was allowed to watch people get brutally killed no problem. Really stupid American puritan stuff

I caveated my comment that I’m not okay with the gambling aspect as well yet you still brought it up. Also this isn’t just nudity, they’re ads are sexual, it’s not just like people hanging out in a sauna in a non-sexual context

It’s so obnoxious that on this site you know that you have to preemptively defend yourself against something you never said, because everyone is just constantly looking for a clever gotcha moment.

People treat this website like an extension of their high school debate club. Nobody talks like this in real life because people would avoid you or punch you in the face.

The overall idea still stands though. There's no good reason for everyone to be hung up with sexuality. I mean, sure no hardcore porn on ads, but trying to avoid any reference to the existence of sexuality is weird. Humans have sex. It's how we ended up with 8 billion of us. People are to uncomfortable about sex. That's their right to be uncomfortable though but its also my right to call it out.

My problem is with people who are fully against any kind of nudity. The human body exists, we shouldn’t shun it like it’s some crazy thing. I agree that the sexual and suggestive stuff should be kept away from children, but like a boob in a movie or show who cares. The ad is a little suggestive but honestly not that much besides from her being half naked, she’s not doing anything sexual. So the outrage over this and not all the gambling actively ruining our children’s futures perplexes me

When I was a kid I watched braveheart with my dad, he made me look away when there were boobs on screen but I was allowed to watch people get brutally killed no problem.

That's a choice your dad made. If he didn't watch it first he still had the MPAA rating to give him an idea of what to expect.

You don't get that choice with ads. People chose to sit down with their kids to watch baseball and were force fed gambling ads with naked women

-2

u/ObiJuanKinobo New York Mets 10h ago

Yes I understand that. My problem is more so with the way we treat a naked human body as some horrible thing that can’t be seen, rather than something natural to learn about. Kids shouldn’t see sex scenes or suggestive stuff sure, but just a naked body is literally scientific and it’s good knowledge to have so you don’t learn from some weird corner of the internet or worse from porn

4

u/DrUnit42 Detroit Tigers 9h ago

Do you think that commercial was "just a naked body" in the scientific sense?

-1

u/ObiJuanKinobo New York Mets 7h ago

No, that commercial is slightly suggestive. But there have been more sexually suggestive commercials that show less nudity that have gotten a lot less flak. People also have to sit through a commercial of Megan Fox basically saying “take this pill and you can fuck me” which is far more suggestive, but because she’s fully clothed people care less about it.

5

u/DrUnit42 Detroit Tigers 7h ago

I also think that one shouldn't be on during playoff baseball.

Gambling ads shouldn't be broadcast during sporting events and prescription/OTC drugs shouldn't be advertised at all. The only people who should be recommendeding drugs to you is your doctor or pharmacist

1

u/ObiJuanKinobo New York Mets 7h ago

Yes I agree with all of that. I just think it’s kind of crazy people have made a big stink over this Sweeney ad compared to the way more harmful ones airing right now

u/PhilliePhanatical Philadelphia Phillies 4h ago

Let's not forget this classic ad.

1

u/ObiJuanKinobo New York Mets 2h ago

I can’t believe they let children watch this filth.

3

u/JoDiMaggio Los Angeles Dodgers 11h ago

Probably because the nudity is in the ad while the gambling requires your attention outside of the ad. If you could gamble within the ad by just pressing a button then it would be the same.

0

u/ObiJuanKinobo New York Mets 10h ago

A gambling addict who likes sports is forced to watch that ad, they have no choice. And it could lead to dire consequences. And if you already have an account, you can literally gamble by turning your phone on, opening the app, scanning your face, and pressing 2 buttons.

Why are Americans so prude?

40

u/dionysios_platonist Seattle Mariners 11h ago

I get that Americans have different attitudes towards nudity than Europeans but these ads don’t just involve nudity, they’re also highly sexualized, a European could see that

-30

u/MEL0NFEL0NS New York Mets • Tampa Bay Devil Rays 11h ago

but these ads don’t just involve nudity

They actually have NO nudity...

they’re also highly sexualized, a European could see that

Sex has been used as a sales technique for decades. This isn't new. This has been going on for 30+ years

20

u/dionysios_platonist Seattle Mariners 11h ago

I get it’s been going on for a while, I just don’t like it. Look man, I just want to watch baseball with my small child without seeing an ad of a woman covering her breasts with footballs in a provocative way, am I really so unreasonable?

-28

u/MEL0NFEL0NS New York Mets • Tampa Bay Devil Rays 11h ago

Look man, when you say stupid shit like they involve nudity, you should be able to back that up instead of crying about your child...

This isn't new. Grow up.

u/JoDiMaggio Los Angeles Dodgers 11h ago

Different cultures have different standards. Crazy concept. We don’t want sexualized nudity on broadcast tv. We are allowed to be upset.

This has been part of our culture for DECADES.

So, what culture are you talking about?

-3

u/BusinessWatercrees58 MLB Players Association 7h ago

They have children now and are uncomfortable with the prospect of having to gasp be parents and explain uncomfortable topics. Apparently parenting was supposed to be easy and not at all awkward at any point.

6

u/OkTop9308 Milwaukee Brewers 10h ago

In the US, parents want their kids to see more wholesome content. We want to see girls and women playing sports, not promoting sports gambling in a highly sexualized way.

It is harder to teach respect for women with these kind of ads. Sydney Sweeney is appealing to the young men who are likely to get hooked on sports gambling. Sweeney is an equity investor of the sports gambling prediction site being advertised.

Part of Europe like France have actual naked women as advertising campaigns... Do they not respect women?

Or are you just a prude?

5

u/JoDiMaggio Los Angeles Dodgers 9h ago edited 9h ago

Yes. We are prude. That is ok. America has literally been more prude (and admittedly ok with violence) than Europe since the Mayflower left port. I don’t understand why we have to be like Europe. It’s ok for different areas to have different cultures.

For example, prostitution is tolerated if not outright legal in 90% of the EU. It is only allowed in half of 1 of our 50 states in the US.

4

u/OkTop9308 Milwaukee Brewers 8h ago

Oh - in France where a husband repeatedly drugged his wife so his friends could rape her? Yeah, that is not the American ideal.

9

u/BassBored Philadelphia Phillies 11h ago

People watch these games with their children or younger siblings. If it was a show thats meant to have adult content then fine but sports are supposed to be viewable to all ages. They force these ads into everyone’s living room and its not ideal to have to turn off the TV everytime Sydney Sweeney wants to show her tits or Megan Fox wants to wear spandex and make sexual innuendos on the screen.

3

u/neuro_space_explorer New York Mets 11h ago

I dunno, it’s wild, I went to France when I was a kid in the 90s and I remember naked women all over ads over there. Commercials, print ads, you name it.

4

u/_bric Milwaukee Brewers 11h ago

We have a severe gambling problem in the US that is heavily targeting young men and ruining many of their relationships, financial wellbeing, and lives in general.

I’m fine with gambling being legal but the current state of it is out of control.

As for the nudity, not sure. Americans don’t have a healthy relationship with nudity, especially with the hyper sexualization of women. People are either gooners or pearl clutchers, when the appropriate approach is somewhere in the middle.

My guess is that comes down to upbringing/socialization and religion most of the time.

0

u/MEL0NFEL0NS New York Mets • Tampa Bay Devil Rays 11h ago

I'm obviously not talking about gambling...

1

u/_bric Milwaukee Brewers 11h ago

It’s likely far more complex than I am making it out to be, but its baked into many American cultures through religion. You can kinda see that in the way our politics works as well, where in many places its basically a prerequisite to be Christian to get into political office.

I would guess that there is a lot of legitimate research out there you can find, this is just my 2¢.

I'm Muslim and I think all women should be covered up

27 day old account whose entire history is wading into topics of racism, rape, nudity, and now pretending to be Muslim.

Piss off, troll.

God forbid I dont want my 9 year old to see some massive titties while watching the dodgers

0

u/Thumper13 San Diego Padres 8h ago

I don't get it. I'm more concerned with the gambling and the demeaning of women athletes. IDC at all that she's half nude.

There are about 1000 commercials that have more problematic stuff than her boobs.
