Discussion How do you keep track of characters when listening to a long audiobook?

hey audiobooks lovers! I sometimes take a few days off from an audiobook and completely forget who a character is when I come back. It gets even worse with fantasy books where everyone seems to have three different names. i usually try to figure it out from the context, but sometimes I end up rewinding quite a bit.

How do you deal with this? Do you keep notes, look up character lists, or just carry on and hope it makes sense again?

Hi guys! Amy Nugent here, I'm the narrator for several books and am trying to distribute the remainder of my free promo codes. Here's what I've got.

"The Adventures of Iric" by J.M. Williams - a fantasy collection of flash fiction stories about a young watchman in the city of magic learning the ropes. I've got 22 US codes but only 2 UK ones.

"I Love You, Vacuum" by Micah Lee West - a short children's story about three siblings cleaning the living room after a morning of play in which the youngest goes bonkers for the vacuum cleaner. 9 US codes and 11 UK.

"What's That? What's Dat?" by Micah Lee West - a very short children's story about a kitten exploring the world with his mother. 13 US codes and 20 UK.

If any (or all) of these sound like something you'd be interested in, let me know and I'll send you the code(s). They all can be redeemed at: audible.com/acx-promo

Discussion Shine On You Crazy Dialogue-man (or woman)

• Upvotes

I've been listening to a lot of audiobooks lately many with American narrators. I've found it amusing; and quite charming (I quite like it) that in the US apparently they pronounce the word 'shone' as 'shown' whereas Britishers would say 'sh-on'. Wondering if anyone else has examples of ''two cultures separated by a common language''? 😄 👍

Discussion Most Previews Unhelpful

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Is there anybody else out there who feels the way I do about audible previews? They’re usually 4 to 5 minutes long, but normally half that time is taken up by information about the publisher and/or some sort of forward.
Don’t they understand that the reason that most of us listened to previews is to get a solid feeling for their narration style?

Discussion Xe Sands

I can’t understand a word this woman says. I swear I’m turning the volume way up and rewinding every three minutes. Why does she speak so low like that? I encountered an audiobook from 15ish years ago and her voice was much, much clearer.

Do you guys have narrators you avoid?

Promotion I built a free iPhone audiobook player because moving my own M4B/MP3 files from PC to Apple Books was painful

I just released version 1.5 of ShelfDrop, a free audiobook player for people who already have their own DRM-free audiobook files.

I wanted a simple workflow: open a browser on my PC, send a book to my iPhone, and listen. No iTunes/Finder sync, cloud storage, or media server to set up.

ShelfDrop lets you:

  • Import from Files, or upload from a computer browser over the same Wi-Fi.
  • Transfer single files, folders of tracks, or ZIP archives.
  • Resume interrupted transfers by reopening Receive mode and selecting the same files.
  • Listen offline with saved progress, playback speed controls, and chapter navigation when the file includes chapters.
  • Share your listening position through a private code or QR. The other device needs the matching audiobook already imported.
  • Use the app without accounts, tracking, or uploading your books to a cloud service.

It’s not trying to replace server-first apps like Audiobookshelf. It’s for the “I just want this audiobook on my phone” workflow.

The latest update focuses on making large transfers more reliable, including recovering interrupted uploads.

For people who keep their own audiobook files: what’s the most frustrating part of getting them onto your phone and listening day to day?

Recommendation Request Looking for Audiobook recs featuring aliens (see details)

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I posted in a couple other channels, but I figured I’d try here too.

I’m looking for Sci-fi audiobooks featuring non-humans. Here are my key parameters:

Do want:

- Aliens/non-humans as prominent characters
- The aliens/nonhumans being friends or allies

Do Not Want:

- Aliens/nonhumans are just the bad guys or invaders
- LitRPG/DCC recs (I don’t like that genre)
- Anything with genAI “writers” or AI voice narrators. I like my books written and read by real people.

I’ve already read Project Hail Mary, Murderbot Diaries and Old Man’s War

Question How do you keep one useful idea from a nonfiction audiobook?

When a nonfiction audiobook gives you an idea you'd like to use later, how do you keep it without turning the whole listen into a note-taking session?

Do you bookmark the moment, record a quick thought afterwards, or use another approach? What have you actually kept doing?

Promotion [US/UK Promo] Free Audible Codes – The Horseman’s Dream (Dystopian Sci-Fi/Horror)

Hi everyone, I am the author of The Horseman’s Dream. The audiobook is now live on Audible, Amazon and Apple Books. In a near-future Britain reduced to a flooded archipelago, a grieving scientist who invented dream-sharing technology lives in exile on a remote Scottish island. When a media empire announces it will broadcast the dreams of a catatonic sixteen-year-old known as The Horseman, he realises the boy’s mind carries the same frequency that has haunted him since his own son’s death. What follows is a desperate rescue across submerged England, a confrontation at Sheffield Cathedral and a final revelation on a beach that should not exist — under twin dying suns.

UK: https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/B0HMCXDVWR

I’m giving away free Audible promo codes to anyone who would like to listen and leave an honest review. Just comment below (US or UK) or message me and I’ll send you one.

Thank you.

Me encantaría conocer vuestra opinión:

Promotion I've been working on a fantasy audio story with a mix of slice-of-life, mystery, and the supernatural.

Hey everyone!

Over the last 6 months, I've been hard at work on a project called The Last Lantern.

My goal with this project was to blend the storytelling aspects of both a book and a movie into an easily digestible unique audio/visual experience.

It includes narration, original music, sound effects, and illustrated visuals (sparingly).

It's a slice-of-life fantasy story with a mix of mystery and supernatural elements.

Just to be transparent, I did use AI for sentence-level editing (grammar, cleanup, etc.), audio narration, orchestration, and illustrations. However, the story, characters, plot, manuscript, and all musical melodies are entirely my own work.

The first two acts are available now (about four hours total), and I'm currently working on the third and final act of the first book, which should hopefully be ready in a few weeks.

It's been a pretty big undertaking, but I've really enjoyed putting it together. I’ve spent a lot—and I mean A LOT— of time and money to complete this project. So if you decide to give it a listen and like what you hear, please subscribe to my Youtube channel. It would encourage me to continue on with this story and to also produce similar projects in the future.

Lastly, this is my first real attempt at writing a book-length story, so please excuse the amateurishness of it. My prose isn’t going to leave you breathless, but it gets the job done for the story. It’ll be something that I hope to improve over time.

Thank you.

Promotion I’m building a free audiobook platform to make discovering and listening to books easier — looking for feedback! 🎧📚

Hey everyone! 👋

I’m working on NextES Audiobook, a new project with a simple goal: make free audiobooks easier to discover, access, and enjoy.

I’ve noticed that finding free audiobooks can be surprisingly frustrating. Books are scattered across different websites, catalogs can be difficult to navigate, and the overall listening experience isn't always as convenient as it should be.

I'd like to help change that by building a platform where discovering and listening to audiobooks feels simple, comfortable, and accessible.

🎧 Give it a try: https://audiobook.nextes.net/

This is a new project, so there's still plenty of room for improvement. That's why I'd really appreciate your help!

I'd love to hear your thoughts:

  • What do you like or dislike about the platform?
  • What features would make your audiobook experience better?
  • Which books would you like to see added?
  • What problems do you usually encounter when looking for free audiobooks?
  • Would you use a platform like this regularly?

I'm especially interested in suggestions from people who listen to audiobooks frequently, as well as readers who would love to listen to more books but struggle to find convenient, accessible options.

If you find the project interesting, sharing it with other audiobook lovers would also mean a lot. ❤️

I'm building this project because I believe access to books should be easier, and your feedback can help shape what it becomes.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out! 📚

P.S. The goal is to make free audiobooks more accessible while respecting copyright and licensing requirements.
