I started listening to audiobooks again about a year ago and since then I have listened to Project Hail Mary, the bobiverse, Dungeon Crawler Carl and I have just finished Red Rising.

All amazing.

What should I try next?

I've been listening to a lot of audiobooks lately many with American narrators. I've found it amusing; and quite charming (I quite like it) that in the US apparently they pronounce the word 'shone' as 'shown' whereas Britishers would say 'sh-on'. Wondering if anyone else has examples of ''two cultures separated by a common language''? 😄 👍

Cant find any need help trying to find one.

And the reader is James Fox. Several libraries across the USA from which I cannot borrow, I have it, so I know it exists. Isn’t there anywhere to get it through an app? Thanks.

Over the last 6 months, I've been hard at work on a project called The Last Lantern. 

My goal with this project was to blend the storytelling aspects of both a book and a movie into an easily digestible unique audio/visual experience.

It includes narration, original music, sound effects, and illustrated visuals (sparingly).

It's a slice-of-life fantasy story with a mix of mystery and supernatural elements.

Just to be transparent, I did use AI for sentence-level editing (grammar, cleanup, etc.), audio narration, orchestration, and illustrations. However, the story, characters, plot, manuscript, and all musical melodies are entirely my own work.

The first two acts are available now (about four hours total), and I'm currently working on the third and final act of the first book, which should hopefully be ready in a few weeks.

It's been a pretty big undertaking, but I've really enjoyed putting it together. I’ve spent a lot—and I mean A LOT— of time and money to complete this project. Lastly, this is my first real attempt at writing a book-length story, so please excuse the amateurishness of it. My prose isn’t going to leave you breathless, but it gets the job done for the story. It’ll be something that I hope to improve over time.

I just released version 1.5 of ShelfDrop, a free audiobook player for people who already have their own DRM-free audiobook files.

I wanted a simple workflow: open a browser on my PC, send a book to my iPhone, and listen. No iTunes/Finder sync, cloud storage, or media server to set up.

ShelfDrop lets you:

Is there anybody else out there who feels the way I do about audible previews? They’re usually 4 to 5 minutes long, but normally half that time is taken up by information about the publisher and/or some sort of forward.
Don’t they understand that the reason that most of us listened to previews is to get a solid feeling for their narration style?

I posted in a couple other channels, but I figured I’d try here too.

I’m looking for Sci-fi audiobooks featuring non-humans. Here are my key parameters:

Do want:

- Aliens/non-humans as prominent characters
- The aliens/nonhumans being friends or allies

Do Not Want:

- Aliens/nonhumans are just the bad guys or invaders
- LitRPG/DCC recs (I don’t like that genre)
- Anything with genAI “writers” or AI voice narrators. I like my books written and read by real people.

When a nonfiction audiobook gives you an idea you'd like to use later, how do you keep it without turning the whole listen into a note-taking session?

Do you bookmark the moment, record a quick thought afterwards, or use another approach? What have you actually kept doing?

I can’t understand a word this woman says. I swear I’m turning the volume way up and rewinding every three minutes. Why does she speak so low like that? I encountered an audiobook from 15ish years ago and her voice was much, much clearer.

hey audiobooks lovers! I sometimes take a few days off from an audiobook and completely forget who a character is when I come back. It gets even worse with fantasy books where everyone seems to have three different names. i usually try to figure it out from the context, but sometimes I end up rewinding quite a bit.

How do you deal with this? Do you keep notes, look up character lists, or just carry on and hope it makes sense again?

they’re great in that they were a tool to help me read and engage with a story. when i was in school i loved listening to the tape and following along with the story. it’s like training wheels and i used those training wheels to read books i was putting off for so long. sometimes i would read a chapter without an audio book and then pick back up again when i notice myself getting distracted in the next.

what i hated about audiobooks is when i used them in unison with doing tasks. is that my memory of what i heard would be attached to what i was doing in that moment. and for me it takes away from what i just heard.

i have adhd so that’s probably why it was so helpful to me.

i know they can be controversial but whats your experience with them vs without?
