Rant The Social Housing Conundrum in Auckland
Social Housing has become a double edged sword for politicians. Spreading social housing actually makes a lot of average Aucklanders very worried, even if publicly they may say they support social housing.
Just to clarify 80% of socially housing tenants are decent neighbours, but there are 20% that make life hell for everyone else.
So a lot of Aucklanders, while they don't want to see fellow Aucklanders on the streets, aren't super keen on having social housing tenants as neighbours. Publicly these people may say they want to see more social housing, but privately they may say 'no where near me'.
If Labour gets into power, by all means build more social housing. But there also needs to be accountability for tenants whose behaviour significantly affects their neighbours and the wider community. That is how you guys lost a lot of Aucklanders last time around.

Employment Kernel job application experience (what a joke)
I applied for a position at Kernel only once a month ago, yet they sent a rejection email three times at different times, after 1 month.
The message was identical, simply copied and pasted.
I may feel a degree of irritation. The situation seems unreasonable, not the emails but the process, they asked people to apply for the job with care and attention while they failed to complete a single task properly.
It is quite a contradiction when the CEO uses social media to boast about treating people with respect.

Discussion Where can I buy Green Almonds (fresh, unripe) in NZ?
I'm trying to track down fresh green almonds (the unripe, fuzzy-hulled kind with the soft jelly-like inside, usually available in spring) here in NZ. I've had them overseas and would love to get hold of some.
Has anyone seen them for sale at:
\-Farmers' markets
\-Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, or Persian Specialty greengrocers or online?
Or does anyone grow almond trees and have spare green ones this season? Thanks

Discussion New Zealand's obsession with being a "good, hardworking person" is one of the reasons so many people tolerate miserable lives.
People will work themselves into the ground, spend half their income surviving, defend a system that gives them barely any breathing room, and then look down on someone who's unemployed or working a basic job as if suffering less makes them morally inferior.
Apparently, being exhausted, financially stressed, and having no time to enjoy your own life is something to be proud of, as long as you can tell everyone you work hard.
If your entire identity revolves around working hard just to afford to exist, maybe you're not winning at life. Maybe you've just become really good at tolerating it.

Public Transport Honest question: Is this right/wrong/debatable? (Bus)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
For context: this happened on top of Rosebank, turning into Blockhouse Bay Rd. The bus lane ended way before; the lane the bus is in is left-turn only. So he cuts in front of traffic. There was only one car behind us.
"Yea he indicated (and now we have to give way)", "yea he had no room", or "nah, that's stupid"?
Genuine question, since nothing surprises me in Auckland anymore.
Edit: It's the 22R Bus, and the clock is an hour behind (now fixed for DST because we didn't notice before)

Question/Help Wanted Where to go for an iud
Hi everyone, I’m a 17 year old girl trying to find a good place to get an IUD that is also not going to cost a whole bunch. I’m fine with paying a little bit. I’m not sure about going to sexual wellbeing as I’ve heard some things. If anyone has any recommendations please let me know. I’m located in north Auckland but happy to travel around Auckland for it. Thank you ☺️

Public Transport Space for e-scooters or bikes on trains during peak?
Kia ora koutou,
I've bagged myself a new job in the CBD and am looking at using the train for as my main commute because parking is expensive.
The walking commute alone will be 20 minutes each way to get to the stations. And I'm lazy. But I'm not spend-$40-a-day-for-parking lazy.
So I'm looking at ways that'll help speed that up.
AT advises not to take bikes on trains during peak hours. My question is: how packed can it get?
My preference is an e-bike because on sunny days I can just bike down the northwestern cycleway, and cold or wet days I could take the bike on the train.
If it's going to be impossible to take an e-bike on during peak, my other thoughts are:
* Folding bike (slightly longer commute if I cycle the whole way vs. e-bike, but I can take it with me on the train)
* E-scooter (unlikely I'd be able to ride it all the way to the office due to the distance, but very portable for the train).

Employment Thinking of holding a sign to find my first IT job in Auckland — would appreciate some advice
Hey everyone, I’m a University of Auckland computer science graduate based on the North Shore, looking for an entry-level opportunity in IT support, software development, or cloud/infrastructure. I have full NZ work rights.
I’ve been applying for jobs for months without much luck. Applying through Seek and LinkedIn can feel like sending applications into a void — often there isn’t even a rejection email, so it’s hard to know what I should improve.
I also tried Summer of Tech, but was told I wasn’t eligible because my CV showed work experience, even though I’m still looking for my first commercial IT role.
So I’m considering something different: holding a small chalkboard with a short introduction and a few skills, hoping to have some conversations and become more visible to local employers.
My technical background includes C#/.NET, Python, React, Linux, AWS and Docker, developed through projects and home lab learning.
I asked Westfield Albany and PAK’nSAVE for permission, but neither could allow it. A big thank you to the Westfield Albany staff, though — they were really encouraging and offered to pass my CV on to their IT department.
I’m not expecting someone to walk up and offer me my dream job. But after months of applications with little feedback, a conversation or a bit of encouragement genuinely means a lot.
I’d appreciate your thoughts:
Have you tried something like this, or seen it work?
Where could I do this with permission, without blocking paths or bothering people?
For people working in IT, what roles or skills would you suggest I focus on?
Are there other industries or career paths where my background could be useful?
If you’ve tried something similar, would like to join me, or have advice or relevant opportunities to share, feel free to DM me.
Thanks for reading!
