Does anyone remember this 90s trend? Shell pendant necklaces with a live crab inside

I have this vague memory of Toronto kids in the 90s wearing pendant necklaces featuring a shell with an actual live crab inside. Was this a thing or am I crazy?

I don't, but I do remember the 90s trend of middle and high school girls wearing plastic pacifiers around their neck.

This was also big in rave culture back then.

IIRC real pacifiers on a lanyard was for rave kids so they could chew on something while high at the raves

But the hard plastic pacifiers were supposed to be either supporting or against abortion, I can't remember which.

I had a couple of them in elementary school. As far as I knew they were just a fashion statement

Naw they were anti-gurning devices but likely that got translated into a neutral accessory for younger people

I got a huge lecture from my Aunt about the abortion thing and yes I forget if it was pro-choice or pro-life. She told me how ignorant I was for wearing something with our knowing the meaning. I think I was 12 and we all just wore them at school. I even had the scrunchie thing where it was made up of tiny pacifiers.

Parents and aunts and uncles also thought Marilyn Manson was getting us to worship the devil and grunge music made us do drugs. So I’d take what your aunt heard from her friends w a grain of salt.

My Aunt is also crazy. She thought me and my brother watch tv and playing video games in tbe basement was inappropriate 🙄

That started as part of the rave scene in the UK. Something about ecstasy making you want to chew/suck on things. I remember my cousins and all my friends in the UK carrying baby bottles and pacifiers.

I also remember dressing as a baby was a popular Halloween costume. Some girls would be extra salacious and dress up as a "sexy baby". Not sure if that also came from rave culture.

Definitely would not fly today.

I had one, it was purple and sparkly. My mom hated it.

And now we have pockets full of specific pacifiers for our babies to make sure they are never without one otherwise we will feel their rage. 🥲

I don’t remember this, but a) how big was the pendant that it housed an entire live crab, and b) that thing must have stunk.

Where did you grow up? I don’t think this was a thing in Toronto

I had a hard plastic keychain with a tiny crab in it in the 90's, it wasn't alive though. The keychain was shaped like a shell, clear plastic on the front & the back was transparent purple with glitter

I remember this from the mid 70’s, not the 90’s

Def happened mid 90s. Wasn't alive for the 70s, but fashion always comes back.

Absolutely not

did you have to feed the crab? Did it go for a walk at night and find its own food and water?

was it a live crab or was it a fake crab with little joints so the claws/legs trembled with movement? bc i do remember the latter kinda being a trend at one point, tho i have also seen the former in nyc chinatown maybe 15 years ago.

Disco Stu had live fish inside his disco platform shoes on the Simpsons. It turns out those really existed!
