I grew up with an Amiga 500 Plus and ended up making a site about what the community is building today

Hi everyone,

My first computer was an Amiga 500 Plus back in the early ’90s. I was pretty obsessed with it. It’s where I learned to code in AMOS, figured out all sorts of things by trial and error, and spent a lot of time playing games.

Years later, I started looking into what was happening around the Amiga and kept going down rabbit holes. New hardware, FPGA projects, operating systems, emulators… I honestly hadn’t realized how much people were still making.

I wanted somewhere I could browse all this stuff and get a sense of how it connects, so I made Amiga Constellation: amiga.kexperiments.com

It started out of curiosity, but also a lot of affection for the machine and respect for the people who’ve kept things going.

There are over 300 entries so far, covering hardware, software, emulation, preservation, and more. You can search and filter the catalogue, wander around a map of the connections between projects, or follow a few guided routes. There’s also a Workbench-inspired theme, because I couldn’t resist 🙂

I’ll definitely have missed things or got some details wrong. If you spot anything, the site has a suggestions section for missing projects, corrections, pictures, and so on. You don’t need an account, and you can also give other people’s suggestions a +1. I’ll work through them and update the catalogue.

I’d love to hear what you think here too—anything from “you’ve forgotten this project” to “this bit is awkward to use” is welcome.

And if you’re one of the people making or preserving any of this stuff: thank you. Finding your work has been a lovely excuse to get back into the Amiga.

Back in 1992, Ocean released their video game tie-in The Addams Family across multiple platforms, including the Amiga. But, alas, when the Amiga version was compared to its 16-bit brethren, one thing was noticeably missing — the backgrounds! Well, no more!

Eenhanced edition of The Addams Family for OCS and AGA Amigas, now with restored backgrounds!

Amiga 060 speed in your pocket (on 30$ retro console - R36S)

[AI USE]

R36S is a great retro console, but emulates bare Amiga 1200 when it comes to speed, impossible to run any advanced games or Workbench with reasonable speed. As built-in Amiberry crashes at almost anything with JIT enabled, I modified Amiberry 3.3 and its JIT to work to achieve better speed than 020/14 mhz (original emulation speed).

It's still alpha version and works only with Kickstart 3.1 for A4000 (40.068) so you need to load this one into roms.

Some games work faster than 060 (my 3d engine at the end of vid and Xtreme Racing), some work well and its hard to tell and some work very slowly (AB3D2 and genetic species are the worst, breathless poor but playable in smaller window, the rest I tested work well). Sysinfo shows 54-65 MIPS on retroarch version and 70-75 on PORTS version. (so there are 2 versions - PORTS and normal retroarch core)

You choose this core either in retroarch64 or among cores in START menu over a game - choose turbouae to use it automatically. PORTS version is simply copied to ports. Works both with 020 no fpu or 040+fpu. Speeds are similar.

Memory Expansion not recognised

Howdy all! I have an Amikit A500 memory upgrade that just arrived in the post. Put it in and... Nothing, not recognised, no increase in Workbench, games don't recognise it. I've removed it, reseated it, cleaned the pins, nothing.

Any ideas? There is a little bit of the connects showing when I slide it all the way in, as pictured, but each connector is housed, unbent, and it doesn't seem to go any deeper no matter how much pressure is applied.

Any help would be appreciated!

Diskette labels?

Hello everyone, I am wondering if anyone has found decent Amiga themed (or just normal) labels for 3.5" floppies that are free to download and print on A4 size paper. Thanks.

This is a quick video I did of the rare Amiga video synthesizer hardware "Mindeye" - I have both this unit and the older one that came out in the late 80s. I am hoping to archive the software and get it online soon - and also work out whether the device will work nicely with the new TheA1200 release.

I made a small image conversion tool for retro game development. It supports resizing, color reduction, palette conversion, and exporting to custom image formats. Supports RGB444 (OCS/ECS) and RGB888 (AGA).

It's completely free for personal use and requires no installation.

Download: https://modern-arcade.eu/download/picoimgtool.zip

Requirements: .NET 8 Desktop Runtime x64

Have fun! 🙂

FluxForge: a Windows GUI for Greaseweazle (testers welcome)

Hi all. I've built FluxForge, a free Windows app that sits on top of the official gw host tools. It installs gw for you, reads disks to raw SCP and ADF/ST/IMG/D64 with a live track map, writes and verifies images, and can re-decode a saved SCP with a different format without touching the disk again.

It tries hard to be honest about results: a read only shows as Succeeded when every sector is decoded, and it warns when a disk has sectors the chosen format ignores (it caught an Atari ST 800K disk being read as 720K for me).

Tested so far on a V4.1 (firmware 1.6) with a 3.5" PC drive. I'd love reports from other boards, drives and disk types, good or bad:

https://github.com/freemchr/fluxforge

Thanks to Keir for Greaseweazle. FluxForge is an independent project and just drives the official tools.

Remember Nebulus on the Amiga? Its open-source remake, Tower Toppler, now runs on Android

The Amiga version of Nebulus (Hewson, 1988), with its smooth rotating towers and that underwater bonus round, is the one a lot of people remember. Tower Toppler is the open-source remake of it, and I've ported it to Android.

I didn't touch the game logic: physics, robots, timing and towers are as they were. What's new is touch controls, a recorded demo for every tower and an optional relaxed time limit.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwKwqkMH3ac

Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.senssoft.toppler (the first towers are free, no ads)

Did you play it on the Amiga back then, or on something else?

Could you build a theoretical “All In One” Amiga?

TL;DR: Could you build an Amiga computer that’s capable of running both the 68k OS3, as well as PPC OS4 natively on the same hardware, outside of using the old Blizzard PPC Accelerators?

To start off, the Amiga was well before my time. Commodore was long dead by the time I was born, and I’m admittedly not the most knowledgeable when it comes time hardware setups.

From what I can tell, the current Amiga community is very much split into two categories: The vast majority that are running classic 68k machines with some form of classic AmigaOS, and those who are running OS4 and MorphOS on PowerPC Amigas. These appear to be mostly different ecosystems, which is understandable considering the vastly different CPU architectures.

I’ve been quite fascinated by the late 90s push to PPC processors, in particular the Blizzard accelerator cards that effectively allowed Amiga’s to be both a 68k and PPC machine at the same time. This seems like it would be the ideal hardware setup, were it not for the fact that Blizzard cards are exceptionally rare and expensive, along with being quite underpowered for really anything that OS4 is capable of.

I’ve gotten the idea in my head about trying to build effectively the Ultimate Amiga, something that could run most 68k games well (some older A500 games having compatibility issues notwithstanding) while also having the horsepower to run OS4 applications such as Blender properly as well. I figured this computer could pull triple duty as a powerful Classic Mac as well via Shapeshifter.

I’ve read about PCI cards that supposedly allow you to use newer PPC processors and even graphics cards on Amigas, but I’ve been mostly unable to find much information about them, and whether they actually allow you to still use the 68k processors or not.

Basically, I’d like to know if a build like this is feasible:

  • An A1200 level board with AGA support, and a 68060 or 68040 depending on what’s easily acquireable.
  • A (relatively) modern PPC processor, ideally something with more than a 1Ghz clock speed. Maybe an equivalent graphics card as well.
  • Capable of dual booting OS3 and OS4, probably installed on different hard drives.

I imagine this would more or less require a from scratch build, likely with a custom case and a replica motherboard, but I’m just curious if a machine like this would even be possible to build in the first place, or if anybody has ever experimented with something like this.

Release Moonstone ACE v0.2.0 - Local & Online Co-op Multiplayer · Jarskih/moonstone-ace-public

Post image

Hi all.
Added multiplayer to the moonstone open source project I am working on.

Moonstone ACE is a C++ rebuild of Moonstone: A Hard Days Knight, made for the Amiga 1200 and ACE engine. Version 0.2.0 adds local co-op and experimental network multiplayer, so up to four knights can play together over a LAN or the internet.

The relay server broadcasts active games here: https://moonstone.shatteredallegiance.com
Please let me know if you decide to try it! (You need the moonstone amiga disks)

I am also working on PC builds using SDL3 but it will still take a while to get those running. It would allow joining the game on both Amiga and PC.

Someone thought of bringing Octamed 4 for PC?

With all this reverse engineering revolution, I'm really curious to see if a group of people will be inspired to bring Octamed 4 over, since it already exists natively thanks to classic 16-bit trackers.
