Regarding "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss tips

Hey everyone,

We've noticed a recent uptick in posts asking for "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss advice. This subreddit exists as a space for healthy, sustainable weight loss discussions. Requests for "unhinged" advice clearly violate Rule 4 and undermine the purpose of our community.

We're fortunate to have a community that usually self-regulates these posts, and the majority of top responses tend to correct this mindset. As moderators, we prefer community-driven education rather than outright removal of posts. Unfortunately, there will always be a few bad actors willing to provide harmful advice in these threads.

Moving forward:

  • Posts requesting "unhinged" or extreme advice will no longer be tolerated. These posts will be removed and you risk being banned from the subreddit.
  • If you see a post like this, continue to educate and correct when appropriate, but also report the post so moderators can quickly handle it.
  • Anyone replying to these posts with actual "unhinged" or extreme advice, even as a "joke," will receive a permanent ban.

Advice: Seeking ❓ i genuinely can’t get myself to make a change, any motivation tips?

i know i want it bad enough, i have been unhealthy most of my life, and i basically daydream of losing the weight, it affects every aspect of my life, but i haven’t been able to do it yet : is it a self esteem thing? i genuinely cannot do better for myself, i’ve tried time and time again, i give up and default to this state of doom and despair, and i know that every kg i gain adds weeks of work to my toll. i’m not morbidly obese, but i don’t want it to get close, and i feel like im wasting my 20s.

any motivation advice? harsh or not, something NEEDS to happen.

So I'm currently trying to lose a little weight. Right now I go on a daily walk of about 5 miles and I use an elliptical twice a day for about 25 minutes each time. That being said my fitness apps are saying that I'm burning around 1000 calories from these exercises and I want to know if I should factor in some of these calories burned into my calories budget?.I can usually maintain my deficit but I always and up getting really hungry on a random day and I eat back basically my entire deficit

Advice: Seeking ❓ How many treat meals you're having per week if any?

I was doing a perfect day from the activity and diet perspective when I had some junk at night. Calories estimation shows it will not effect the journey but in my experience i produce results when I am only on clean diet without adjusting for these junks in the daily nutrition requirements.

Anybody producing results while having some junk in the week where u r near maintenance or above maintenance calories 1-2 days a week?

Advice: Seeking ❓ Struggling

Female/32/72kg/5"3

I hate my upper torso, it's definitely what makes me feel insecure. Especially when I see old photos of how I used to look like. I gained a relationship weight, but now we're no longer together I'm left with flabs.

I struggle to be consistent, especially during PMS where I'm craving sugar and carbs. I know losing weight isn't easy, but it's bumming me out. (As I feel pretty unhappy with how I look) I'll take any tips. Cheap healthy meals plans. I also don't go out much now because of anxiety, so gym is out of the question.

I appreciate any help 💜

Discussion/Support 💬 Always been interested in the power of language… trying to use this as a tool for weight loss

I have always believed in the power of our internal monologue (& what we say aloud) in influencing our behavior, but I have a bad habit of joking about my eating habits.

“I’ve had a sweet tooth my whole life,” “I’m a big dessert person,” “I’m an eater,” etc. are phrases I use all of the time. I used to be much more self-conscious of my body and my appetite than I am now, and I found freedom that came with not being embarrassed of these things.

However, I also think that these scripts have reinforced these behaviors, and they’re behaviors I now want to change. I am serious about wanting to lose weight, and I am no longer accepting all of the excuses I’ve laid out for myself.

Has anyone practiced the power of mantras, self-talks, etc. in their weight loss journey?

Discussion/Support 💬 Discouraged by the dr

Over the past 3 years I’ve had 2 babies 18 months apart and breastfeed each for about 10 months. At my highest weight during my 2nd pregnancy I was 245. Since May, I’ve been working really hard to feel like myself again and take care of myself. I’m now 186. About a 60lb weight loss total and about 40 since I’ve last seen the dr.

I’ve been working out over 500min a week. Walking for miles. I was so excited to share that I walk a 5k with a stroller and two kids at least once a week if not twice. Other days I try and get at least a mile and I lift weights 2-3 times a week. My blood pressure (on medication) is dropping too low! I figured it was because I lost weight and could taper off the meds.

NOPE

I was nervous. Blood pressure was 142/80. I swear up and down that I’m here because I get light headed at home and take my blood pressure and it’s low. IMMEDIATLY hit with the “lifestyle changes”. Was told that I should get more sleep. Then she asked when I had dinner, I told her around 6 and sometimes 2-3 times a week I’ll have a little sweet treat before bed. THAT WAS THE WRONG ANWSER. Looked over my after visit notes and it’s literally in there 3-4 times that I have a sweet treat. Yall it’s literally a singular small icecream sandwich or a small piece of a homemade dessert. As soon as I bought it up too the dr said “I don’t like that, you should be snacking on cheese and not something with carbs and sugar”. I said it’s not every night but apparently that didn’t matter. She literally said I shouldn’t be having a sweet treat and sitting on my couch all night.

Yall I told this woman I get 7-8 hours of sleep, I work out, I’ve been watching what I eat, and I’m still met with being lectured about the occasional treat so I don’t withhold so long that I binge on every sweet ever invented.

When I was first weighed the computer flashed a warning because I’ve lost so much weight since last visit, the nurse had to make sure it was intentional. But instead I’m just treated like another fatty.

I wish my lifestyle would have been asked about instead of assumed.

I give myself 1-2 off days a month and I’m thinking of taking that today. I’m so discouraged and defeated and like giving up. Even tho I know that’s not wise.

Please help👉🏻👈🏻

Advice: Seeking ❓ I need to lose weight

I’m 18M, 6,1, 330 pounds I’m absolutely disgusted at myself for being fat I barely started to workout a couple of weeks ago but I only worked out for a total of 3 days because of how bad my body hurt. I’m also not sure if I’m doing the right exercises that I need to lose weight I’ve been so confused I just did random workouts with weights and cardio. I had a goal to try and get to 180 pounds but now that I’m thinking about it that seems impossible I have no idea what workouts I should do to loose weight and gain muscle. I’m trying to keep myself motivated because I really want to snowboard someday it’s been my dream ever since I was a kid but I’m not sure if I can even do it at this point.

Advice: Seeking ❓ What can I do better for a permanent change? [31F]

I’m planning on starting a workout routine very soon (currently building my home gym) and I want to focus on maintaining muscle mass while cutting as quick as possible. What do you recommend?

Success maintaining a healthy weight | 13-19

+15 lbs over 90 days, then plateaued | age 23
•1600 calorie diet
• weight training (free weights & machines)
• no longer swimming

+30 lbs over 1 year | age 23-25

• Depression hit, I ate what I wanted but it was all home cooking, very little junk food.

0 lbs over 14 days | age 25

• HIT five out of seven days a week plus swim 1 day a week.
• Trainer quit because I didn’t lose any weight.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Stuck at 250

This year I decided to lose weight finally. In 5 months I lost 58 pounds through a strict diet. I am 19 years old at 6’2, I went from eating 3800 calories (most likely more) from eating 2000 calories a day. In those 5 months I went to the gym 4 days a week for about an hour. In the 6-8th month I’ve been stuck at 250 and haven’t been seeing any progress. It really has been demotivating so I stopped going. I don’t know what to do

It’s month 9 and Im just stuck at the same weight no weight or gain.

Any tips or advice suggestions?? Anything can help at this point

Meal / Recipe 🍽️ i am trying to lose 8 pounds and here are pictures of what i ate

OK, so I’m trying to lose 8 pounds right now or 8 to 10 but it’s probably a little bit more realistic of what I ate throughout the day and I didn’t take a picture of dinner, but it was basically I went out to this Greek restaurant and I had two skewers of chicken kebab but they had vegetables in between each thing so probably only like eight total pieces and I had that and then I had like two spoons of seasoned brown rice. then after dinner, I just had a bowl of strawberries and grapes and then a kiwi.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Binge eating

Im really struggling with binge eating in the last few months. It hasn’t happened for 4 years and has suddenly started again. I’ve tried talking therapies and that didn’t help me. Does anyone know what else I can try?
Im really struggling because every time I go to a heath care professional they dismiss me because I’ve got “a smaller frame”. What I don’t think they understand is that I just want to quiet the food noise that’s constantly in my head and address my need to binge.
HELP!!! Xxx

Advice: Seeking ❓ How to lock tf in?

How to lock tf in?

I used to be an elite swimmer working out 6 days a week 2 days with double practices 11 months out of the year. I did that for 6yrs of my life. Super disciplined.

I'm now 25, I have a freelance film/photo job that works often at odd times (could be 5am 15hr day, a midday 2hr day, or a 6hr evening day ending at 3am). Between I lift weights (midday) and am on a masters swim team (pracs evenings).

My issue is nutrition and working out. On a good week or month with less work or more predictable work I can workout and cook. But when things get busy and my days/nights are unpredictable and I'm having to miss swim pracs or don't have time to go to the gym, I'm stuck ordering in late night food, getting hungry at odd hours, and sometimes going a whole week without working out.

Issue is too I live in NYC and in a place where it takes forever to get anywhere via the subway (I live in deep Brooklyn, 48mins -1+hr to get to places). I have acquired a lazy mindset and frequently lethargic. It sucks that it takes 30mins to get to the gym and 1h15m to get to swim practice. Or just 48mins min to get anywhere I wanna go via subway (adds up quick)

Before I'd feel super guilty not working out and would shift my work around being able to workout, but with this economy and my promotion in my work I'm prioritizing working and scheduling my gigs first.

I have a hard time sticking to eating certain food cuz I get bored easily and will end up picking something out to eat on the go (cava, chipotle, lox bagel, etc).

I would love to get back to working out in the mornings for the gym and the swim in the evenings (pracs are 7-8:30pm). The issue is inalso don't want to get tired at 10pm cuz my work sometimes goes past midnight and I cannot be tired then.

Anyone have any tips for a crazy schedule.

Progress 📈 Foundayo has made me realize how bad my binge eating got.

May 2025 i weighed 159lbs and was happy for the most part with my physique. (M, 5'9)

But then something happened, i started allowing myself to eat more, i started getting alot of sweets. i started binging at night. And despite me playing basketball at least 3x a week , lifting daily, my weight skyrocketed to 175lbs and im disgusted with myself again. and at the fact im 5lbs away from the heaviest ive ever weighed.

I have done the calorie counting, and everything in the past and i know it works, but i could tell this time was different. i lost full control. i couldnt stop the binge eating. So i got prescribed Foundayo. Im down to 171lbs already. I want to get back down to 160lbs, preferably 155lbs.

It made me realize just how bad my eating had gotten with portion control. Especially since i like to drink and need more drinks than most to get a good buzz going, that dont help on the weekends either.

The nausea was rough day 1. but its been fine since. im looking forward to speeding up my weight loss and locking back in with food control. Especially since i like to drink, i know i need to eat alot more cleaner during the week than i was.

Advice: Seeking ❓ How do I stop relying on food for comfort after long, exhausting days while still sticking to my calorie goal?

I start my day at 5:30 am with a coffee and a trip to the gym, then head to work until 5 pm. By 8:30 pm, I’m usually in bed, ready to do it all again the next day.
The problem is that I find it incredibly difficult to stick to my calorie goal, especially towards the end of the day and when I get home from work. My days feel so long and exhausting, and by the evening, I often feel like I simply haven’t eaten enough.
It’s not even just about physical hunger. There’s a huge emotional component to it, too. After such a long day, I desperately crave the comfort and enjoyment that food brings. I want the chocolate, the desserts, the rich, fatty meals — something to look forward to and enjoy after spending the entire day working and exercising.
I find that, no matter how determined I am to stick to my calorie goal, I almost always end up exceeding it by the evening. At that point, eating feels less like a choice and more like something I genuinely need to get through the day. Right now, it feels like food is one of the few things that helps me unwind and cope with how exhausting my routine is. 😞
My current goal is 2,000 calories a day, but I’m really struggling with it. It just doesn’t feel like enough, either physically or emotionally, and I’m finding it increasingly difficult to maintain that restriction consistently.
Any advice?

Advice: Seeking ❓ Signed up for Orangetheory, bought meal prep gear, yet feeling stuck. What am I missing?

A few quick details to provide context I guess?
32 F (181 lbs, 5’1) with 2 kids (4 and 2) work from home full time; currently on Wellbutrin, seroquel and Lamictal for mood disorder or bipolar or something (also do talk therapy once a week); recently found out pre diabetic (6.3 A1C)

I’ve been STRUGGLING since postpartum. I really thought the weight would just melt off esp with breastfeeding 😂 I’m having a hard time figuring out where to start. I’m overwhelmed with information. My goal is to workout (orange theory 3x a week; walk for an hour the other days of the week), eat Whole Foods (like not processed) for every meal, but also keep cooking to a minimum, stop ordering out so much; possibly start intermittent fasting? But I feel like idk where or how to start and stick with it. I signed up for OTF already and at first money was the motive to get the biggest bang for my buck, but that motivation quickly died. I order a bunch of groceries to meal prep (like the cowboy cavier stuff or soups or ground meat type of things) but I almost always let the groceries rot because of how convenient food delivery is now. I feel like I’m constantly failing and I’m not sure how to get started AND stick with. If you were me, where would you start and how would you ensure you would keep going?

Discussion/Support 💬 Do calorie counters actually help you eat better?

Calorie tracking works well for weight loss, but it often creates a notable blindspot.

The core premise of energy balance is undeniable: consuming fewer calories than you burn will lead to weight loss. However, tracking numbers alone frequently leads people to eat the same poor-quality foods, just in smaller portions. Fitting 1,800 calories of ultra-processed snacks into a daily log does not produce the same metabolic or satiety response as 1,800 calories of nutrient-dense whole foods.

A controlled trial by Kevin Hall at the NIH highlighted this phenomenon clearly. When participants were given ad libitum access to either unprocessed meals or ultra-processed meals matched for presented calories, fat, sugar, and fiber, they spontaneously consumed roughly 500 extra calories per day on the ultra-processed diet. The food matrix and processing level altered eating speed and fullness signals, making passive overeating much easier.

Similarly, the Stanford DIETFITS trial published in JAMA by Christopher Gardner showed that participants achieved meaningful weight loss without counting calories at all. Their focus was shifted entirely toward whole foods, vegetables, and minimizing refined sugars and processed grains. Isn’t this a more sustainable approach?

Curious to hear from people who track: did counting push you toward higher-quality whole foods, or did you find yourself trying to fit the same energy-dense foods into your daily targets?

Mental Health 🧠 Food addiction

I was so good for 2 months. Losing at a decent rate, not eating my trigger foods. (I have a true food addiction)
And yesterday, while I didn’t eat my worst trigger, I BINGED. Like, binge binge.
It was a hard day. I’m not ok. Why did I do that?
2 months clean, and I go and do that.
Today I still feel full and bloated.
Just really hating myself.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Is it possible to lose a consistent amount of weight in 9 months?

Haven't weighed myself in many months but I'm pretty sure I'm currently around 100 kgs (F/30/165 cm)

I'm feeling discouraged and like I'm destined to be fat, always been heavy but I have zero time due to my stressful job and I end up getting fast food and junk food..

I know I cannot keep doing this, I have my bffs wedding in july 2027 and I really want to get in shape.

Is it possibile in 9 months only without exercising?

Advice: Seeking ❓ Advice on dieting and food hyperfixation

Hey guys, random question. I recently got scouted and signed to a modeling agency, but when I went in for my development I was an inch too wide in both my waist and hips. They still want me, but I literally don't know how to lose weight for shows. Since I've been given advice on how to eat, all I think about is food. It's become a hyperfixation where I'm eating 5+ times a day and way more than anyone around me, which has only led me to gain 2 or 3 more inches since. I'll do deficits, but the days I have off I'll literally eat 5 times my calorie goal. It's not that I can't eat healthy food either, I don't mind that, it's the fact that's I'm always thinning about eating more. I've been trying the gym more recently, but I think after going I get rid of all my progress by eating so much. How do I stop hyperfixating on food?
