Discussion Help me choose a watch for my bf !

EDIT: you guys got to me I’m not getting these anymore, please help me out with other affordable alternatives I can get him!

Hey guys! I’m looking to buy my boyfriend a watch for our anniversary, and since this would be his first watch ever, I’m having a hard time deciding what to get him.

First things first, all the watches I’m considering are from Fossil, so PLEASE guys, not with the Fossil hate right now 😭 I’ve looked into brands like Tissot, Seiko, and Casio, but I haven’t found anything I really like within my budget. Plus, my boyfriend has mentioned liking Fossil watches before, so I think it should be fine!
I’m purely here for your opinions on the design and aesthetics, not the functionality or the brand itself, so please bear with me LOL.

I’m mainly torn between leather straps and metal bracelets. I like the leather ones, but I feel like the metal bracelets look a little more expensive and classy. I also like watches with little pops of colour, but I’m not sure whether to play it safe with something more classic.
For context, my boyfriend is around 5’9” and 170 lbs, and he usually dresses in suits or business-casual attire. Ideally, I want something versatile that he can wear pretty much every day, whether he’s dressed up or just wearing casual clothes.

I’m also unsure about sizing. The options I’m looking at range from around 42 mm to 45 mm. Would any of these sizes look too bulky, or would they be fine? Is there any way to tell what size would suit him without knowing his wrist measurements?

I’d really appreciate some input, especially from guys who wear watches regularly! If you were buying a watch for another guy, which style would you go for?

I’ll attach pictures of the options I’m considering. Thanks in advance!! :)

I took a picture [Rolex] Got my new watch ready to represent the Pack!

Recently picked up this 2015 Rolex Hulk and figured with it being all green, I had to get a gold strap for watching Packers games! The folks in the Rolex sub will probably hate this because most of them think Rolexes should only go on bracelets, but this FKM rubber nato is pretty cool.

Go Pack Go! Let's win at Lambeau South this weekend!

Anyone else have a certain watch or strap combo for their preferred team?

Discussion “Watches need to be worn”

JLC’s Director of Heritage Mathieu Sauret was recently asked whether timepieces are better off preserved or worn.

His reply was that watches are much better worn because they are warmed on the wrist, and the oils are then at their best.

How true is this?

If so - does this imply smaller rotations to you?

I took a picture Help me find out my grandpa's watch model

Hi guys, I found this vintage watch in my father's closet, and he mentioned it belonged to my grandfather, who likely got it back in the '50s or '60s. After looking into it, I found out it’s an Enicar, which is a Swiss brand that went out of business long ago. The watch dial says "Automatic" and "Day-Date," and it’s fitted with a stainless steel Citizen bracelet that I'm pretty sure isn't original. I managed to open the screw-down case back, and inside it’s stamped ENICAR WATCH CO SWISS 2342. On the movement itself, there are small engravings that read AR 1147 and 24 jewels. When I search the reference number 2342 on Google, I get mixed answers—some say it's a Sherpa, but I haven't been able to pinpoint the exact model line. Currently, the winding stem and crown are missing, and looking inside, the automatic winding rotor is missing too. When I gently shake the watch, the balance wheel spins and the second hand moves for a few seconds before stopping. Is a watch this old still repairable, and how hard would it be for a watchmaker to source replacement parts for an AR 1147 movement? I just want to know and can I put a original bracelet too. Likely a black one. I would love to have an automatic watch I'm 20m thank you :)

Discussion The Porsche Hodinkee Collab

Post image
0 Upvotes

I love this design, but shocked at the price tag. Quite a few of the Hodinkee collabs have been really affordable, not this one. Thoughts? Seems insane to pay 10K for this. Doesn't seem like it's instantly sold out, so possibly the price tag is throwing other people, cause there's a lot of watches to get for 10K or less. You can even get an IWC 41mm with day date chrono for about 6K right now brand new, or a Hamilton X-Wind. You could actually get both new for cheaper than this, and I don't think the depreciation is going to be that meaningfully different.

I took a picture [Invicta] I think I found the perfect watch to complete my collection

So... Hear me out.

I posted my Invicta collection on r/watchescirclejerk recently and got called a Chad, and someone recommended the Joker. So I went to an Invicta store to try it on, and honestly, I kinda love it lol. The gold looks surprisingly good in person, and the dial is just ridiculous in the best way possible.

Might have to pull the trigger on this one. Surely this will finally complete my collection, right?

Discussion The AP Royal Oak is mid

Maybe this is a hot take maybe not. I’ve just been getting into watches this past year and honestly the Royal Oak to me is just average. For how expensive it is there are many other integrated bracelet watches like the Patek Nautilus I’d rather have.

Im planning on getting all three but I’m having a little trouble picking what’s first, since I’m still learning I went for three very different watches just to stay more diverse, The citizen pro-master seems the most practical right now but at the same time it seems a lot less versatile than the other two, I’m really not all that picky though and would happily take any of them, I think I just need a little convincing, what are we thinking?

  1. Citizen EO2020-08E
  2. Orient RN-AP0101B
  3. Seiko SBTQ039

Discussion Monta Noble 40 vs Tissot Gentleman 40mm

Hello guys, want to add a darker dial GADA watch to my silver Longines conquest.

After looking around and what I’m willing to pay at the moment, the ones that I liked are the
- Tissot Gentleman
and
- Monta Noble 40

So two questions and I hope that you guys could help me out :
- The Monta is 1k more expensive than the Tissot, I live in Europe so I have no chance to see one in person. Is the price difference justified ?

- Regardless of the model, would you choose the blue or black dial?

Last picture is with the Gentleman on wrist.

Thanks !

Discussion [Question] Trading in my late father’s Datejust: which of these options would you take?

Thumbnail

After my father passed, I inherited his 2005 Datejust 36 (two-tone, Jubilee, fluted bezel, black diamond dial, full set, excellent condition). It isn’t my style and hasn’t been worn in over 10 years. I used to wear an Omega Speedmaster with blue face everyday, but that was recently stolen. Rather than leave the Rolex in a drawer, I’ve decided to trade it for something I’ll actually wear. It wasn’t an easy decision.

I’ve gone to several local dealers and also asked for offers from stores online. A well-established local jeweler (not an AD, open over 25 years, high Google ratings) has offered the most in trade for what I have:

  1. 2025 Datejust 41, blue dial, Oyster, flat bezel, full set: my watch plus I pay an additional one thousand dollars
  2. ~2023 Datejust 36, silver dial, Oyster, flat bezel, full set: I get one thousand dollars back.

3. ~2016 Datejust 36 Oyster, flat bezel, with the dial swapped to a genuine blue stick-marker dial, no papers, store guarantee: I get three thousand dollars back. (Is a dial swap without papers a red flag?)

If I do get money back, I would use it on buying a second, maybe less formal, watch.

I could also try selling on Chrono24 myself for more than the local dealers are offering, though I’m nervous about the risks.

This is my first foray into luxury watches so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion Why are so many secondary market listings priced above market value and unwilling to negotiate?

Looking at some JLCs and so many of these watches have been sitting for months at 1-1.3k over market rates. When I inquire about wiggle room in the pricing, virtually all are willing to come down like 1-2 hundred, but nothing close to being reasonable (according to market trends). This is my first time buying used, so maybe this is just how things are, but I dont see how they can move inventory.

Any thoughts or insight?

Review I bought ALBA AT3K07X1. Is it a good watch? Should I return it?

I visited just in time and found this ALBA watch for Rs.12k. I really liked it and was hyped up. I bought it for Rs. 7800 in Amazon great Indian sale.

Is this brand even good enough to wear? I feel watches should have a good brand and you should be self explanatory. I understand that ALBA is a sub brand of Seiko, wouldn't it be better to push and buy a Seiko itself?( I already have Seiko sport 5). Should I return this watch?

Discussion Retail workers with fancy watches?

I’ve seen Daytonas, two tone DJ’s and more

And I’m not talking about Watch or jewelry retailers

I live in a high cost of living area

How are retail workers affording multi 10 k watches? Are the gifts? Fakes? Family wealth? Just curious.

Discussion Calibrating my watches through counting, why is my watch off?

whenever I get a new watch, i always count to 120 (the 120 seconds on the watch) at the start of a minute to make sure its tuned correctly. however, i have noticed most watches i have had the privilege of handling were reaching the full minute around 60, or lower numbers like 45 when I counted a bit slower. how do I tune my casio watch to fix this?

I don't know if this makes up for all the terribly designed homages that make up their catalog - but holy smokes, this watch is stunning.

EDIT: I may have jumped the gun here, i didn't know about the MB&F legacy machine. Still this watch is lot better designed than most of their stuff.

Torn between these as next watch. Love the unique dial of the Kollokium but the Nomos looks brilliant and adds a true gmt/dual time function.

I took a picture [SOTC] My humble collection, and no idea what to add as 3rd.

Seems I am in dead end. I would like to add third watch, but every watch I would like to have or had have some "but"

Overseas - not fit comfortably

321 Speedy - redundant with White

GS SBGH353 - returned, springbar issues

CHNR, BLNR - sold, 3285 movement issue

PAM 3325 - movement not great

PAM1313 - only 2020 had proper p.9010

PAM01731 - too thick and polished

Fifty Fantoms - left side logo uff

Ingenieur - movement and price for what is it

AquaTerra - all polished new model

JLC Reverso Duo - price went out of roof, 30m WR

The only watches that I am considering is New PO, but it will be another Omega and I haven't seen new Master Control Power Reserve or Milgauss Z-Blue, but thickness.

Or maybe I have to take a break and just enjoy the life :)

Discussion [Size comparison] 41mm vs 45mm

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’d like to hear your opinions. This isn’t about the watch brands, but rather the size. I’m wearing 41mm on my left wrist and 45mm on my right. Which size suits me best? The 41mm watch is a Breitling, and I feel like it is a bit small. What do you think? Should I regret buying it? I’d really appreciate your honest opinions. I’m trying to decide which size looks better on my wrist and feels more balanced. Thanks in advance for your help!

Discussion Got this for my wife. Piaget Polo. Thoughts?

Post image

I was able to get it for a little over the cost of gold. It seems to have a problem with the stem where it’s in position 0 and it will do full hour adjustments as if it’s in position 1. So it looks like the stem is not seating all the way. I can return it by Monday. I think if I can get the stem issue fixed on this quartz watch, for the spot price of gold, it’s a good deal. Would welcome feedback. I wanted something unique for my 5 year anniversary. I started looking at Rolex datejust 26 mm and stumbled upon this. I know very little about the brand, but my dad recognized it.

Review [35 Days of WatchMaxxing] Day Four - The Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic Chronograph

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

I got so much distaste for my SOTC that now, you guys are coming along with me for a ride: 35 days of watch-maxxing in my SOTC. One watch per day, and the story behind each. Enjoy!

My collection’s theme is a series of watches, made from a company that has any of the following: American heritage, American-based design and/or assembly, American ownership, or American roots of some sort.

Today we have the Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic Chronograph, 42mm.

Quick Specs:

  • Reference No: H71516133
  • Case diameter: 42mm
  • Case material: 316L Stainless Steel
  • Lug to Lug and Lug Width: 52mm l2l, 22mm lugs
  • Thickness: 15mm
  • Movement: ETA Valjoux 7750
  • Crystal: Double-Domed Sapphire
  • Water Resistance: 100m
  • Lume: C3 SuperLuminova
  • MSRP: ~$1300 USD
  • Actual Price Paid: $650

The Brand: It’s Hamilton. American watchmaking giant since 1892, and moved to Switzerland in 1969, in response to the quartz revolution. During its time in America and Switzerland, it is famous for having supplied watches to multiple militaries, having been present in many conflicts. The company also pioneered many watch breakthroughs, including the first electric watch, and one of the first automatic chronographs. Owned by the Swatch Group since 1974, they occupy the entry point into the Swatch mechanical catalog, alongside brands such as Tissot, Mido, and Certina.

The Model’s Story: Released in 2003, the watch was released as a response to the oversized pilot chronographs that were popular in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, such as the IWC Pilot 43. Using some of their own field watch DNA, and borrowing cues from the popular models, they created this substantial watch. Huge dimensions, it fits at the edge of wearability on my 7.5”/19cm wrist. The watch and bracelet are fully brushed, with the exception of the bezel, pushers, and crown, which are highly polished. The dial is a matte black, and is highly legible.

My Personal Connection to the Watch: I love Hamilton. When I came across this reference on eBay, I fell in love with it. It has not been babied by me; it has dings and scratches and has been beaten to hell. It’s well-loved. It’s still ticking along. Its previous owner is a Porsche mechanic; I’m following in his footsteps: this watch is often found on my wrist  when wrenching on my bikes and cars.

My Favorite Memory with the Watch: Not a specific memory but a series of motorcycle riding in the canyons here in Southern California where I call my home. Using the chronograph to time my canyon runs (on my slow putt-putt Harleys) and enjoying the terrifying freedom that comes with motorcycling.

Why I Love It: It’s big, it’s chunky; it’s masculine and it’s letting you know that it is. It doesn’t shy away quietly under a cuff, instead, it boldly presents itself as an instrument to be worn and used. It's the Jason Momoa of watches. Large, rugged, rough around the edges, and handsome.

Dislikes: The clasp on the bracelet sucks. Putting it on a strap shows these gaps between the case and the strap that are WIDE. The AR on the crystal SUCKS. I feel like this one will get a crystal upgrade down the line.
