Does he understand the fiscal situation prior to 1913? You couldn’t even fund the current military and interest on national debt with tariffs. Let alone everything else. You couldn’t fund the interest alone with tariffs.
He is still beating the drum that foreign countries pay tariffs on US imports. US consumers pay them.
Truly remarkable. Speaking to the dumbest among us.
19
u/Drippy_topper 4h ago
The dumbest among us got him back in the white house, it works.

Conservatives hate income tax specifically because it is progressive... ie. Rich people pay more proportionately because they have higher incomes. Most poor people pay no income tax whatsoever. Conservatives prefer consumption based taxes which disproportionately impact poor and middle class people because we spend a larger percent of our earnings on products and services (versus rich people who put more into investments and savings).
Any time a politican talks about getting rid of income taxes, just know that they see their job as representing the rich - not you.
→ More replies (20)3
u/Environmental-Hour75 3h ago
Income tax is NOT progressive because omly middle class have "income" rich people live on "capital gains" and pay a leasor rate, and the poor live under the exemption line.
To make it progressive... classify capital gains as regular income, gains on assets put up as collateral are considered realized and part of income, then set your progressive rates lower across.the board and eliminate tax credits.

"Fiscal policy"????!!!!
Hilarious. trump knows this isn't any kind of actual policy with any intention of improving the US. He 100% wants to destroy everything but the elite. This isn't some kind of inept but earnest attempt at policy, like: "Here's my bad idea, I hope it helps." It's "I'm going to rape the US because I am a known rapist. I'll just call it "fiscal policy."Trump has no loyalty to ANYTHING or ANYONE but himself.

And how exactly is that supposed to work? Tariffs?
14
u/vxicepickxv 4h ago
His goal is to create a national sales tax so that the poorest pay the most in terms of total money.
4
u/spookydookie 4h ago
Exactly, the money still needs to come from somewhere. If tariffs are raising enough money to make up the difference, you’re just shifting the tax burden away from the upper class. Plus you can even have much finer control over what is tariffed at what rate so of course luxury items won’t have as high of rates to let them pay even less.

Is Trump seriously trying to take the United States back to the Great Depression? According to Google AI, abolishing the current income tax system with universal import tariffs is unfeasible since generated tariffs is just a fraction of the revenue made from income taxes.
This is yet another prime example of Trump not knowing what he's doing, that and his carelessness and severe lack of headspace and timing.

There is a plan behind what's happening, and the people involved have not been shy about it.
The philosophical inspiration is project 2025 and a man named Curtis Yarvin.
——
“Trump himself will not be the brain of this butterfly. He will not be the CEO. He will be the chairman of the board—he will select the CEO (an experienced executive). This process, which obviously has to be televised, will be complete by his inauguration—at which the transition to the next regime will start immediately.”
Yarvin and many others who are involved were present at a Coronation Ball held for Trump the night before the inauguration.

2025 is a weird mixture of the tech fascists and New Apostolic Reformation Charismatic Christianity; their apocalyptic dreams fit together quite well.
3
u/Fit-Historian-752 1h ago
Yarvin is an even bigger idiot than Trump.
Watch some of his "debates" online. His idea of "winning" a debate is to bring up ONE obscure book that no one has read and then reference that exclusively.
He IS one of Peter Thiel's acolytes though, so it's not like he's not dangerous.
He is known as "The Prophet" in the Tech Bros community.
Seriously, we need better billionaires
9
u/pushdose 4h ago
Exactly. You think his presidency isn’t gonna end with insane austerity we haven’t seen since 2008? No way. If everything crashes, those with dry powder will buy up the scraps while the dems are forced to rebuild yet again with low interest rates and soaring consumer prices. Rinse and repeat, if the Rs ever get reelected.

4
u/Resevil67 4h ago
Yes he knows, and that's his goal. Ask yourself what you would do if you were trying to destroy the US from the inside, then look at the actions he's done so far. They make a lot of sense if you look at it from that angle don't they?
Of course he's a puppet, he is acting off orders. However Russia, as well as the oligarchy like Peter Thiel, Curtis Yarvin, Elon musk ect all want the US to fall so they can put their own little corporate run fiefdoms on top of its corpse.
4
u/ConiferousTurtle 3h ago

Okay, let's math it.
Republicans had to refund $166B in illegal Trump tariffs collected between "Liberation Day" and the Court's striking it down. Approximately 324 days. Giving us a total just under $515 million per day.
Income tax receipts during 2026 were about $2.55 trillion, which divided by 365 days means income tax brought just under $7 billion per day.
This means Trump's tariffs could replace about 7% of the budget. A budget that runs a 25% deficit already.
3
u/DangerousPurpose5661 4h ago
Lets crank those 100% tariffs to 1000%, that totally won’t screw everyone except the filthy rich

Well newsflash, since that cargo ship sailed with the standard 20-foot container in 1956, the tariff model is not possible. Nations can easily replace one another for lowest supplier (unless critical parts), so that won't work definitely. But he doesn't care.

O great and wonderful historian!
- Panic of 1884:
- Panic of 1890 (Baring Crisis):
- Panic of 1893:
- Cause: Depleted U.S. Treasury gold reserves, worries over the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, and the collapse of major railroads like the Reading and the Northern Pacific.
- Impact: A severe nationwide depression, hundreds of bank and business closures, and widespread hoarding of gold coin over paper currency. [1, 2]
- Panic of 1896:
- Cause: Intensified political and economic anxiety over the free silver movement and the stability of the U.S. gold standard during the presidential election year.
Tarriffs were so far up the economic structure that it was the only reliable place to get money because The People were wrung out before anything "trickled down."

I agree. Abolish income tax for anyone making under $100k. And then create a progressive tax from there up to 100% at anything over $10m. (Including with stocks being taxed at a cumulative rate for the year at the amount they were valued at on that date).

1870-1900, the era he is speaking of, was known as "The Gilded Age"
It is known for wealth inequality, massive swathes of Americans living in poverty and was an absolute plutocracy - where money bought power.
It's exactly what Trump is after today. It was great for the wealthy, but was not a good era for normal people. The income tax was a mechanism to rebalance the inequality coming in part, out of this era. They'd love to undo that.

Society, economics, and geopolitics have fundamentally changed over the past 150-200 years. We’re not subsistence farmers developing homesteads anymore, nor do we have a minimal standing military. Armies cost money. Roads cost money. Keeping the economy stable costs money. Almost any other tax scheme we could swap to would be inflationary and even more punishing on the poorest of us. But I highly doubt he’d even implement the level of alternate taxation needed to not result in the federal government financially imploding in a couple years. Contrary to what a lot of internet libertarians and anarchists think, the government does serve a purpose. Life gets significantly more uncomfortable for all but the absolute richest 1% of us without a functioning government.
